Edward Baptist was cited by Edward Ball in his article "Slavery's Trail of Tears" as being one of the historians who in the last ten years have documented the forced migration of one million enslaved people from the upper south to the lower south cotton growing states in a forced resettlement 20 times larger then Andrew Jackson's "Indian removal campaigns of the 1830s.
