Sports Forum / Sharapova Fails Drug Test
« on: March 07, 2016, 11:30:01 PM »
Maria Sharapova failed a drug test at Australian Open

Maria Sharapova announced Monday that she failed a drug test at the Australian Open earlier this year.

Sharapova received a letter from the International Tennis Foundation several days ago informing her that she had failed the test for a substance that had been legal until Jan. 1 of this year. Sharapova did not indicate what the penalties would be or how long she might be away from the game of tennis.

She had begun taking the substance Meldonium in 2006 to aid in a variety of health problems. However, the drug was added to a banned list starting at the beginning of 2016. Sharapova conceded that she did not look at the list of newly banned substances for 2016 from the World Anti-Doping Association, and thus indicated that she failed the drug test because of ignorance.

3 charged after 40 to 50 gunshots fired in uptown Charlotte, striking vehicles, hotel

Cleve R. Wootson Jr.

and Karen Sullivan

Three men in town for the CIAA tournament were arrested Sunday after they fired dozens of bullets into two vehicles and an uptown hotel and were found in possession of an AK-47, police said.

No one was reported injured during the early-morning gunfire, which happened around 4:40 a.m. near the Hyatt Place hotel.

The three charged are: Howard Kevin Wright, 32; Kevin Demetrius Thompson, 28; and Dereke Bolton, 34. Wright and Bolton both live in Memphis, according to records from the Mecklenburg Sheriff’s Office. Thompson lives in Elgin, S.C. The men were in town for the CIAA tournament, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department spokeswoman Officer Jessica Wallin said.

The city had declared the tournament an extraordinary event and called in a large contingent of city employees, including police officers. But the gunshots were fired around 4:45 a.m. Sunday, when crowds had thinned hours after bars and clubs closed.

Cam Newton: Why Carolina Panthers' New QB Is the Worst NFL Draft Pick Ever

By Jim Folsom , Contributor
 May 9, 2011

Cam Newton is a sure-fire bust. I am so certain of this that if he is the Panthers' starting quarterback in 2016, I will buy a Cam Newton jersey and stand in the stadium parking lot in my underwear when the Panthers come to Tampa Bay and hold a sign proclaiming that Auburn rules over Florida and Carolina rules over Tampa Bay.

This guy will be long gone by then. Here are just a few of the reasons why I believe he will make Ryan Leaf only the second-biggest draft bust in history.

1. Cam Newton has not had enough experience as a starting quarterback to warrant a No. 1 pick. He only really played one year of meaningful college football. Yes, it was a fantastic year. Yes, his team went undefeated and won it all. But it was still only one year. How do we know that it wasn't a fluke? How do we know that Auburn didn't win because of a fantastic supporting cast? We don't.

2. Cam Newton has never lost a game as a starting quarterback. Wouldn't it be nice to know how he will react when he does lose a game? Because in the NFL, it won't take long. Is he going to learn from his mistakes? Is he going to repeat them? Will he go all "Vince Young" and threaten to hurt himself? Will he lose all confidence? We don't know. Sure would be nice to know these things before using a No. 1 pick though.

3. Cam Newton is no brainiac. From all accounts, he came off as an idiot on Jon Gruden's show on ESPN. He looked as if he had no idea what was going on. He was stumped by Gruden's questions. Some even said he looked bored.
Did he get by at Auburn on sheer athletic ability? Of course he did. He's a freak athlete. Most of his yardage was gained by running the football. But this is the NFL. You had better be able to read defenses, pick up blitzes, recognize different coverages, etc. or you will not last long.

There are many people alleging that the real reason Cam Newton left the University of Florida was not because he was caught with a stolen laptop computer, but because he was caught with papers written by other students. Now, I don't know if this is true or isn't true. But before I used a No. 1 pick on this guy, I'd sure want to consider the possibility that it could be true.

If so, what does it tell us? It tells us that he is not smart enough to do his own work and get a passing grade. But you expect him to outsmart guys like Dick LeBeau?

4. Cam Newton's character has been repeatedly called into question. We have accusations of him and his father shopping him around to the school with the fattest wallet. We have accusations of academic fraud, grand theft, obstruction of justice and destruction of someone else's laptop. That's a whole lot of red flags.

When things are going rough for the team, Cam is going to be the guy the other players are going to look to for leadership. How is that going to work? He has no credibility. His word means nothing.

5. Cam cannot hit the broad side of a barn with a football. All other issues aside, isn't the number one job of an NFL quarterback to complete passes? Did you NFL guys not watch the BCS title game? How many touchdowns did Cam leave on the table by missing receivers who were running free? That game should not have even been close.

On Newton's pro day at Auburn, there were reports of him missing receivers badly while throwing against air. What will happen when he has NFL defensive linemen with bad intentions bearing down on him?

How can an NFL franchise waste a No. 1 draft pick on a guy with this many question marks? Last year all we heard was how Tim Tebow was not worth risking a first-round pick because of his throwing motion—not just the top pick, but anywhere in the top 32. Name another issue with Tebow. Character? Please. Intelligence? No. Accuracy? Not really. Yet somehow because he came from a spread system he was deemed unworthy of a top pick. Guess what system Cam came from.

So how is it we go from "Tebow sucks" to "Cam is awesome" in one year? When these two guys played on the same team for two years, Cam was the one riding the bench while Tebow was breaking records and winning championships. So how is it that the treatment of Cam by the "draft people" is 180 degrees different than Tebow's? I don't know.
Let's ask Denver Broncos fans if they would like to trade Tebow for Newton straight up. They would laugh in your face. Football fans know even if the experts have no clue. We can spot a fraud when we see one.

In five years, when Tebow is leading Denver into the playoffs and Cam Newton is riding someone's bench, remember this article.

General Discussion Forum / Marvels, Jessica Jones on Netfix

Marvel seems to have found a niche for their anti-hero series on Netflix. They did a great job with Daredevil and now have done it again with Jessica Jones. Mike Colter makes a good Luke Cage which sets up nicely for the LC original series later this year. Anyone else watching?

Refs let this one get way out of hand. OBJ, had a mini meltdown and should have been tossed. I imagine some fines for both are coming tomorrow.

A&T students, fans eager for matchup with Carolina

Posted: Friday, September 11, 2015 11:25 am

By Jenny Drabble and Jeff Mills

GREENSBORO — For Tyra Slade, it wasn't a question of whether she would go to Saturday's football game between A&T and North Carolina. The question was who she would cheer for.

“In North Carolina, you’re either Carolina or you’re Duke. I root for Carolina,” said Slade, a freshman at A&T. “A lot of my friends have been huge Carolina fans all their lives too, but we go to A&T, so we really don’t know who to pull for.”
As game day draws nearer, the student hype has escalated as the Aggies prepare to take on the Tar Heels at 6 p.m. at Kenan Stadium, making history for A&T’s football program.

The game is only the third time the Aggies will have faced an NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision team in its 92 years of football. It's the first time A&T will play either of the state's two ACC public universities.

Aggies notebook: A&T names freshman Lamar Raynard starting QB

By Jeff Mills

GREENSBORO — Lamar Raynard has been named the starting quarterback for N.C. A&T’s season-opening football game against Shaw on Saturday night at Aggie Stadium.

Raynard, a redshirt freshman from High Point, didn’t play a single down for the Aggies last season.

“He’s going to be nervous,” A&T coach Rod Broadway said Monday. “It’s natural to be nervous going into your first game. Hopefully he has enough support around him where we can calm him down and get him to play at the level we need him to play.”

Raynard was named the starter over incumbent senior Kwashaun Quick, who won’t start a season opener for the first time in his career.

Quick played in 11 games last season, completing 58.2 percent of his passes for 1,418 yards, 13 touchdowns and six interceptions. His 610 rushing yards were the most ever for an Aggies quarterback, and he ranked ninth in the MEAC in rushing.

Am I the only person who now looks at Caucasian males differently in the movie theatre? This weekend when the wife and I went to see Fantastic 4 this middle aged dude came in by himself and sat down a few seats from us. Well, I pretty much kept my eyes on him the entire time (movie sucked anyways).  I'm even embarrassed to admit that when he went to concessions I got up and followed him. I know profiling is wrong but I couldn't help it.   :blush

Just curious because I never see us wearing jerseys of former or current HBCU players. Just to name a few, could I go to your respective bookstore and find the following jerseys?

General Discussion Forum / Randall Kerrick Trial Begins in Charlotte

Randall Kerrick Trial to Begin Monday in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE - Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer Randall Kerrick, who shot and killed an unarmed black man, starts trial for a voluntary manslaughter charge Monday.

Early morning Sept. 14, 2013, Jonathan Ferrell crashed his car on Reedy Creek Road in Charlotte, which led to a deadly encounter with police.

Ferrell knocked on a neighbor’s door to seek help. The homeowner called 911.

Responding Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer Randall Kerrick shot and killed ferrell who was unarmed. Police charged Kerrick that day.

Now retired police chief Rodney Monroe said that day “It's quite possible that [Ferrell] was seeking assistance based on his accident. It was a pretty serious accident. At the time of the shooting he was not armed.”

Kerrick’s attorneys would later claim self-defense.

“I know Jonathan,” Georgia Ferrel, Jonathan’s mother, said two years ago. “He's a very uplifting, happy person. He wouldn't hurt anyone.”

An autopsy released in November 2013 revealed that Kerrick fired a dozen shots, hitting Ferrell 10 times.
