Broncos sign former Raiders punter Marquette King to three-year deal

The Denver Broncos have signed free-agent punter Marquette King to a three-year contract, the team announced on Thursday.

A source told ESPN's Adam Schefter the deal was worth $7 million.

Pro Football Focus ranked King third among all punters last season, and he finished third in the NFL in net punting average (42.7 yards).

On March 30, the AFC West rival Oakland Raiders released King, whose social media presence was just as large as his punts were booming. While the Raiders did not offer a reason for cutting King, there were whispers that new head coach Jon Gruden's old-school ways might not have jibed with King's larger-than-life personality, especially for a punter.

NC pastor orders removal of boy’s grave marker in financial squabble with parents

By Mark Price

A 5-year-old Hickory boy who died of juvenile leukemia last year has had his grave marker repossessed in a financial tug-of-war between his parents and a North Carolina monument company.

The boy, Jake Leatherman, made national news last November when dozens of NASCAR drivers, crew and other personnel attended his funeral, including Joey Logano, Matt DiBenedetto, and Ryan Ellis. The boy never got a chance to go to a NASCAR race, but was a devoted fan of the sport, and idolized NASCAR star Richard Petty.

Wayne and Crystal Leatherman of Hickory told the Observer’s news partner WBTV Monday that they were stunned to learn their son’s grave marker was gone. In its place was a hole full of mud.

“He repossessed it, like it was a car,” Crystal Leatherman told WBTV. “This is my lowest point.”

Deshaun Watson donates first paycheck to cafeteria employees

HOUSTON -- Texans rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson donated his first game check to three women who work in the NRG Stadium cafeteria and who were especially affected by the flooding from Hurricane Harvey.

"For what you all do for us every day and never complain, I really appreciate you all, so I wanted to give my first game check to y'all to help y'all out in some type of way," Watson told the woman in a video shared by the Texans. "Here you guys go."

Watson, who has a base salary of $465,000, donated a check for $27,353.

Panthers cut ties with Dave Gettleman as general manager

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Carolina Panthers have fired general manager Dave Gettleman effective immediately, the team announced Monday.

"After much thought and a long evaluation of our football operations, I have decided to relieve Dave Gettleman of his duties as general manager," team owner Jerry Richardson said in a statement. "I want to thank Dave for the role he played in our success over the past four seasons. While the timing of this decision is not ideal, a change is needed."

The move comes nine days before the Panthers are scheduled to report to training camp at Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

The team offered no immediate reason for Gettleman's dismissal.

Seahawks icon and Hall of Famer Cortez Kennedy dead at 48

Cortez Kennedy, an icon with the Seattle Seahawks who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2012, has died at age 48, the Orlando Police Department said Tuesday.

Kennedy was a force inside, both as a run stopper and in threatening quarterbacks. The 1992 Defensive Player of the Year made eight Pro Bowls, had 58 sacks -- an unusually high total for a tackle -- and spent his entire 11-season career with Seattle.

Named to the Associated Press 1990s All-Decade team., Kennedy was credited with 448 tackles, six forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries and three interceptions during his NFL career.

He also was an All-America honoree at the University of Miami and was on the Hurricanes' 1989 national championship team.

The controversy began last week after a Facebook post claimed people at the Smithfield's Chicken 'n Bar-B-Q restaurant sang the NWA song "F- the Police" to Raleigh police officers who were eating at the restaurant.
