Sports Forum / A&T vs NCCU Basketball Rivalry
« on: March 05, 2020, 09:38:42 PM »
Watching that game on ESPNU was LIVE!!! :o I don't think there is anything quite like it in college basketball. I still wonder if NCCU goes with A&T to keep this great Home-Home rivalry alive.

Is it a given that attendance translates into stronger programs for our student athletes?
SWAC and MEAC lead FCS in attendance but  :tiptoe:

NCCU looked at the BigSouth years ago and it was a  because of the anticipated lack of support when on home and away schedules with those schools.  I felt NCCU analysis correctly called what came to pass upon scheduling BigSouth schools here in Durham.  NO SHOWS.  Like playing Hampton for every game home or away.  They just don't attend with a weak fanbase.  Hated to see them leave.  It wasn't that big a deal in the long run.  Just sentimental remembrances of having a good time in Bball tournament in Norfolk with friends from HU.  I missed that.

The Big South equation looks a lot different for NCCU now because #1 A&T is no longer in the MEAC and #2 A&T is in the Big South. Oh #3 will help their students with travel and study.

The MEAC has 9 football members. When we go to the Big South the MEAC will have 8 football members.

The Big South will have 8 football members and 3 are part time members.

The MEAC doesn't have problems.

I don’t think it ends with A&T and Hampton.

NCCU has the least interest in remaining in the MEAC. They only recently rejoined, probably gave Big South a very serious look when they went D1 and now A&T and also Hampton are Big South. MEAC to Big South is probably a good move for NCCU. We remaining MEAC schools will have to figure it out.

The A&T vs NCCU Basketball rivalry will suffer if you are in different conferences. :tiptoe:

The remainder of the MEAC institutions need to ensure that they each have a strategic plan for program growth and a potential fallout. The days of status quo HBCUs and their leagues is well behind us. While several institutions have seen an increased enrollment numbers, several MEAC members are in the middle of significant enrollment peril only semesters away of ruin like Portland’s Concordia University.

If I were to guess what the future would hold. I’d think the best case scenario would like this this:

SWAC Expansion
FAMU, BCU to the SWAC
Alcorn moving to the SWAC west making the SWAC a HBCU athletic conference with twelve schools who all have a solid football fan base that travels well.

Big South Takes Another
NCCU looks to the Big South to stay relevant and not be the odd man out when the dust clears.

CIAA Expands
Coppin State, Del State, UMES and Norfolk St. join the CIAA making an amazing north division along with Lincoln, Bowie State, VSU, VUU

SIAC Adds Another
The SIAC returns to Orangeburg, SC with SC State as a new member.

Heading North
Being left out from the Big South expansion Morgan State and Howard enter the American East or Northeast Conference together.

Bison fam, this is a good post. I think you might be on to something. The only point of divergence I would have is that SC State would be a better fit in the CIAA with Claflin there now. That would be a nice basketball rivalry. Otherwise, the southern MEAC schools could be eyeing the Big South along with NCCU. I guarantee you that there are more backroom discussions right now. Any word on Norfolk State?

You can't be serious.

Yes I see four more possible defections to the Big South, for the same reasons Hampton and A&T joined.

Kennesaw State and North Alabama, are they Big South or A-Sun?

Big South for football only. The rest of the sports must be A-Sun.

This is the direction I see things possibly going.

I personally would love if Howard returned to the CIAA and CI could also snag Morehouse, Clark-Atlanta and even Tuskegee!

Should some seek SWAC membership?
Should some join A&T and Hampton in the Big South?
Should some return to the CIAA?
Should they stay put and rebuild the MEAC?

Who should do what? What do you think?

If FAMU and BCU go to the SWAC, they could join ASU, A&M, Jackson St., and Alcorn St. in the Eastern Division.

If NCCU and Norfolk St. join A&T and Hampton in the Big South, that will be a good solid conference.

Howard and the other MEAC schools perhaps should consider a return to CIAA IMHO.
