But will they be competitive in other sports too?
Men's track won the last five GCAC outdoor team championships but has not produced many qualifiers for NAIA nationals.

Women's track was second to Xavier in the GCAC last season.

Volleyball is 0-18 all-time against Xavier, so they do not appear to be a threat to Spring Hill at this time.

Women's basketball won 103 games the last five seasons but has not qualified for NAIA nationals since 2007.

Men's basketball has not qualified for nationals since 2008...0-4 in four trips to nationals. Sixth place in GCAC last season. Second-year coach Frederick Summers was the GCAC Coach of the Year at Talladega in 2017-18.

Baseball and softball both finished eight games below .500 last season. Softball did qualify for NAIA nationals opening round, then got shut out in both games. Baseball reached 30 wins four straight years from 2015-18.

Men's cross country upset Xavier for the 2017 GCAC team title, and junior Solomon Stevens was the GCAC individual champ in 2017 and 2018. But his best 8K time at the conference meet would not put him in the top 10 at last year's SIAC meet.

Women's cross country was fourth in the GCAC last season. Best finisher's time would have ranked 26th at SIAC meet.

In the GCAC all-sports standings of 2018-19, Xavier was first with 56 1/2 points, and Edward Waters was second with 41.

WSSU should join the NAIA. It's less expensive to operate in the NAIA, and there will be a nearby conference home for all its teams. The competition is pretty good, too.

Men's teams are still the Gold Rush.

Xavier volleyball's Pat Kendrick got her 500th victory as a head coach Saturday with a four-set home win against Dillard.

Then PK got No. 501 Monday at home against SUNO in three sets.

Saturday at Philander Smith, Monday at Rust. Stop by and say hello.

Xavier (New Orleans) women's volleyball beat a top-25 team for the first time ever.

The Gold Nuggets defeated NAIA No. 22 Indiana Wesleyan 25-17, 25-22, 19-25, 25-19 Saturday in the Mid-South Crossover Challenge at Bowling Green, Ky. Sophomore Kayla Black -- a paternal granddaughter of former NFL and Grambling quarterback James "Shack" Harris -- had 21 kills, 14 digs, two aces, two blocks and hit .414.

Xavier is 3-1 this year and 26-4 since Pat Kendrick became head coach after the 2016 season.

Why leave out Xavier? Most 20-win basketball seasons of any HBCU. Men or women.

Onnidan, I just added you to my postgame scores email list -- one of the first groups I send to after a competition. Should have added you sooner. My apologies.

Xavier volleyball is 12-2 overall -- the best start in school history -- and 7-0 at home. Winner of 11 of last 12 matches.
Thursday at home: Xavier 3, William Carey 0 (31-29, 25-9, 25-21)
Xavier trailed 24-19 in the first set.
Philander Smith visits Xavier Saturday. Anyone old enough to remember when both those teams played football?
Freshman Kayla Black, a granddaughter of James "Shack" Harris, is one of the Gold Nuggets' standout players. Kayla led Xavier in kills in September.

Xavier defeated Dillard for the 16th consecutive time
Xavier 11-2 overall, 5-0 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference

Xavier volleyball wins 25-22, 25-19, 25-12 at SUNO.

A few notes about some of the others:

Donte Jackson was 49-11 the past two seasons at Stillman.

Nikita Johnson (Stetson) is a longtime DI assistant. He was on LSU's Final Four staff in 2006. He's from the Florida panhandle.

Anthony Anderson (Central Connecticut) also is a longtime DI assistant. Head coach at Dillard for a couple of years.

Ron Ekker won 205 games in 15 years as a college head coach. But he hasn't led a program since 1982. If this isn't his son, Ron's about 77 years old.

Cedric Yelding was a standout player at South Alabama about 25 years ago.

Ricky Duckett has nine years as a college head coach. 73-19 in three seasons at WSSU.
