An HBCU Student Forum hosted by The Undefeated with President Barack Obama at North Carolina A&T State University

ESPN’s The Undefeated will present A Conversation with The President: Sports, Race and Achievement – a student forum with President Barack Obama, on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 10 p.m. ET (ESPN and WatchESPN) from North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, N.C.

The one-hour program will be taped earlier that day in front of a live audience consisting of students and invited guests at the Alumni Foundation Event Center on the campus of North Carolina A&T, a leading Historically Black College and University established in 1891. SportsCenter anchor Stan Verrett, a Howard University graduate, will host and moderate the forum.

President Obama will discuss lessons in leadership; the “My Brother’s Keeper” Initiative, which aims to address opportunity gaps faced by all youth including boys and young men of color; the current role and legacy of Historically Black Colleges and Universities; athletes and social activism; the Obama Administration’s actions to provide opportunity for students  and more. The President will also take questions from the audience.

I'm sitting here wasting time until I leave for DC and went to the A&T site and twitter and I know often times we carry on about the lack of student support and attendance at our games (football & basketball) but for some odd reason I tuned into the volleyball game and those Aggie Students have PACKED out Moore gym for a Volleyball match vs NCCU.....I just had to give them a shout for supporting one of our non revenue sports.....

After reading http://onnidan1.com/forum/index.php/topic,83378.0.html (MSNBC Host Makes Fun of Romeny's Black Grandson) and the subject getting on how many used the Paper Bag test as one of the factors in admitting people into their schools back in the day it prompted me to look back at some of the old AYANTEE year books from way back when. A&T has digitized many of their old publications and they are available online in our Archives online.....If you have some of your school or other HBCUs post them would love to view....

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) - The mother of a middle school student who was being suspended has been arrested after deputies say she walked into the school and slapped the wrong child.

Spartanburg County sheriff's deputies say 36-year-old Tyshekka Collier went to Fairforest Middle School Wednesday morning to pick up her son. Principal Ty Dawkins called authorities after Collier walked into the office, mistook a boy for her son and slapped him in the face.

Dawkins said that boy was sick and had been waiting to be picked up.

Dawkins says once Collier realized her mistake, she apologized, then walked over to her son and knocked him to the ground.

Collier was charged with disturbing school and assault and battery. It wasn't known if she had a lawyer.

Her three children are in protective custody

General Discussion Forum / NC A&T awarded Grants of $1.76M & $1M

NORTH CAROLINA GLAXOSMITHKLINE Foundation AWARDS A&T $1.76 MILLION STEM GRANT

A five-year, $1.76 million grant from the North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline (N.C. GSK) Foundation was announced today that will fund the creation of the Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Center of Excellence for Active Learning at North Carolina A&T State University. The STEM Center will inspire current, incoming and prospective N.C. A&T students to pursue STEM studies and careers.

“We are thrilled to receive this grant from the N.C. GSK Foundation that will enable us to take our science education to the next level,” said Dr. Goldie Byrd, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. “Our new STEM center will position N.C. A&T to become one of the nation’s top producers of high achieving graduates who pursue STEM careers.”

The funds are being used to implement two new student-centered active learning models for more than 5,000 students annually. By building a university based community of faculty scholars in science education, the project allows for a myriad of course redesigns, group based education, and a new community of practice for student learning.

“The N.C. GSK Foundation has a long history of supporting science and education in North Carolina,” said Marilyn Foote-Hudson, executive director for the N.C. GSK Foundation. “We are proud to provide this grant to N.C. A&T State University that will not only increase the number of adults in STEM careers, but will also increase diversity in the STEM workforce.”

The grant supports two strategic pipeline programs at the high school and pre-freshman levels to provide motivated students with a strong foundation for matriculating in STEM disciplines.

• The summer enrichment program will immerse high school juniors in critical applications of science, computational science and mathematics, and prepare them for SATs and college.

• The pre-matriculation bridge program will immerse incoming freshmen in chemistry and calculus pre-courses. Workshops will strengthen oral and written communication, critical thinking, time management, leadership and business etiquette and financial management.

In addition, the N.C. GSK Foundation scholarship fund will support and retain cohorts of high achieving STEM students

General Discussion Forum / A&T Alum makes Gift for Future!!!
« on: June 28, 2012, 12:38:16 PM »
Just saw this in the weekly E-Blast...AGGIE PRIDE

A&T Alum Makes Gift for the Future
Source: http://archive-staff.ncat.edu/univrel/alumni/2012/jun28/zollar.html

It’s been nearly three decades since Patricia Miller Zollar graduated from North Carolina A&T State University and she wants to make sure students – present and future – carry on the legacy of excellence.

“When I think of North Carolina A&T State University, words that come to mind are pride, commitment to excellence and belief in every student,” says alumna Patricia Miller Zollar.

Zollar, a 1984 graduate, has become one of the university’s major donors and paid in full a whole life insurance policy valued at $1 million.

“I want the university to live on in perpetuity. I want my gift to contribute to the success of A&T long after I am gone,” she said.

Her planned gift will be used to support an endowed professorship in the School of Business and Economics in the future.

She attended N.C. A&T on a full scholarship and said it is her responsibility to give back to the university and help secure its future.

“I wanted to provide a gift that was equivalent to my capacity; to provide a legacy gift emblematic of my commitment to a university that has been one of the formative institutions of my life,” Zollar said.

She is a managing director of Neuberger Berman, an independent asset management firm, and the president of Northbound Equity Partners where she runs the Northbound Emerging Managers Private Equity Fund.

Prior to joining Neuberger, Zollar co-headed and co-founded the Lehman Brothers Partnership Solutions Group (“PSG”), a Wall Street business focused on developing strategic opportunities with women- and minority-owned financial services firms.

Before rejoining Lehman Brothers in 2004, she spent six years in asset management with Goldman Sachs, where she was a vice president in the asset management division.

She attributes a large part of her success to the demand of the academic program at A&T, which prepared her for the workplace, earning a M.B.A. from Harvard University, and becoming a certified public accountant.

In July 2007, Zollar was appointed to A&T’s board of trustees and reappointed to a second term in 2011. She is currently the vice chairwoman. She also serves on the Executive Leadership Council and the board of the National Association of Investment Companies.

Zollar and her husband Al have one daughter and split their time between New York City and Greensboro, N.C.
