Dear Tuskegee University Family,

Today, I am pleased to announce a $20 million gift from philanthropist, activist and author MacKenzie Scott. This is the largest single gift in the university’s history. We are thrilled about the possibilities this unrestricted gift will afford Mother Tuskegee.

This gift comes at an opportune time for us. We are in the process of launching a five-year strategic plan and with this investment from Ms. Scott, we will be able to unfold the next phase of our mission in ways we simply could not have considered before.

I envision the gift being used to support four broad areas at Tuskegee: increasing student access, strengthening signature programs, advancing research and innovation, and preserving the university’s legacy. Our goal will include a focus on student scholarships, faculty and curriculum development, interdisciplinary programs, and campus infrastructure improvements.

In a recent interview with Alabama News Network, I spoke about the importance of philanthropy for the future of Tuskegee and all HBCUs. This transformative gift along with the unwavering support of our alumni, will assist in the viability of Mother Tuskegee for years to come. Stated another way, this gift will help us to become the Tuskegee of the 21st century – a university that integrates knowledge, leadership and service to solve the problems of a global, modern society.

While we’re celebrating this historic gift today, I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge and thank our alumni, board of trustees, donors and supporters, who have also generously responded to our fundraising efforts and recent giving campaigns.

As the Tuskegee Airmen soared through the blue skies despite times of uncertainty and adversity, today, Tuskegee University continues to soar to new heights, and this is undoubtedly an effort to commemorate.

Thank you for your unwavering support of Mother Tuskegee.

— Lily D. McNair, Ph.D.
