Eagle Banker^^^the sistah’s name is Maria Taylor, an analyst/commentator for ESPN college football and other sports, and she is very good at her job. She hosted the round table discussion with football players from Power 5 schools, a discussion of which precipitated Kirk Herbstreit’s emotions.
I was aware of this thread the day it was posted three days ago, but wanted to first hear from other peeps before chiming in. I am a big fan of ESPN College Gameday, and therefore am familiar with all of the people joining Kirk and Maria on the discussion.
I didn’t think that Des Howard was crying when I saw the video of the discussion, but being the only black male among the analysts, and having balled for Michigan and winning the Heisman, it certainly is understandable if he was emotional.
As another poster mentioned^^^, David Pollack, whiteboy who balled at Georgia, just sat there on the panel looking in as if he didn’t have a CLUE what the conversation was all about. I honestly don’t think dude gives a rat’s a.z.z about the issues the ballers discussed with Maria. Sorry, but he has always impressed me as just a prototypical good ole fashioned southern whiteboy.
Coach Lee Corso is rather the old curmudgeon on the show. But he was one of the main ones who pushed for Des Howard to be a regular panelist in Gameday some years back, so he gets big props for that. Rece Davis is the anchor for College Gameday and, bless his heart, he tries very hard to overcome the fact that he is a whiteboy from Mississippi and an Ole Miss alum, and all the racial garbage tied up in his heritage. He appears to have even consciously softened that ole Mississippi whiteboy twang.
So that leaves, then, Kirk Herbstreit, the subject of this thread. I literally CRINGED the first time I saw the video of Herbstreit crying discussing the round table. I could not - and still don’t - understand why the subject matter upset him so much. The other white males barely seemed moved by the topic. Why was Kirk so upset?
Someone please explain.
Strike,
I watched the broadcast live, I guess I was looking for anything that resembled football this fall. ESPN College Gameday was the best that I could do on a Saturday morning. Typically I’d be driving from Charlotte to Durham for an NCCU football game.
Perhaps you didn’t see the entire clip in which Desmond wiped his left eye much in the way that we men wipe our eyes when we don’t want others to notice us crying.
In my statement I was clear that I didn’t know her name and apologized for it. But thank you for sharing her name. I’ll be sure to make a note of it for future reference

.
In terms of Kirk’s empathy. While I am angry, tired and frustrated with how our community has been treated, the purpose of the Black Lives Matter movement and peaceful protests are to get others to join us in our fight for equality. Kirk remarked that White people should join arm in arm with us to protest the injustice. His expression wasn’t behind closed doors where most express their disgust in how we are treated, it was on national television in plain view by millions.
I don’t know how you could watch the full video and not feel some level of sincerity from Kirk. It was clear that his peers felt that his remarks were genuine. Maria was moved to tears and was visibly crying on set.
So help me understand what your opinion was of the video? Help me better see your point of view.
