Trump news – live: Republicans forced to pause impeachment hearing after bombshell evidence on president from key witness Sondland triggers panic

Donald Trump has lashed out at his Democratic opponents conducting the House impeachment inquiry, mocked key witnesses giving testimony for their sartorial choices and denied that the onset of a heart attack was what prompted his sudden trip to hospital on Saturday.

“These people are sick. They’re sick. And the press really in this country is dangerous. We don’t have freedom of the press in this country. We have the opposite. We have a very corrupt media,” the president ranted from the Cabinet Room of the White House.

The inquiry heard from four witnesses on Tuesday who gave more telling details of his administration’s coercion of Ukraine and will hear on Wednesday from a man who could prove to be the hearings’ star turn, US ambassador to the EU Gordon Sondland, a hotelier and Trump donor who has already amended his original deposition to say there was a quid pro quo in play in US dealings with Volodymyr Zelensky.

Politics / A White House Now 'Cannibalizing Itself'
« on: Today at 01:43:44 PM »

WASHINGTON — As Lt. Col. Alexander S. Vindman sat in a stately chamber testifying Tuesday, the White House posted on its official Twitter account a message denouncing his judgment. His fellow witness, Jennifer Williams, had barely left the room when the White House issued a statement challenging her credibility.

In President Donald Trump’s Washington, where attacks on his enemies real or perceived have become so routine that they now often pass unnoticed, that might not seem all that remarkable — but for the fact that Vindman and Williams both still work for the very same White House that was publicly assailing them.

With the president’s allies joining in, the two aides found themselves condemned as nobodies, as plotting bureaucrats, as traitors within and, in Vindman’s case, as an immigrant with dual loyalties. Even for a president who rarely spares the rhetorical howitzer, that represents a new level of bombardment.

Trump has publicly disparaged Cabinet secretaries, former aides and career officials working elsewhere in the government, but now he is taking aim at people still working for him inside the White House complex by name.

“This White House appears to be cannibalizing itself,” said William C. Inboden, a former national security aide to President George W. Bush. “While many previous White House staffs have feuded with each other and leaked against each other, this is the first time in history I am aware of a White House openly attacking its own staff — especially for merely upholding their constitutional duties.”

We need to be clear and concise in our language about this lying criminal (see, I just did it!) because otherwise we risk minimizing the crimes most corrupt administration in American history.  So, let’s listen to these guys and call what Trump did what it is: a crime that should get him impeached.

Republicans Called Kurt Volker, But He Didn't Help Their Case .   :snicker  :snicker

Morrison and Volker both were damaging in defense. To borrow a useful metric from the NHL, their collective plus/minus was a nightmare. In particular, Volker was as slippery as black ice as he tried to “thread the needle”—his words—between what he said before and what he’s saying at the moment. But he let just enough slip to demolish his utility as any kind of defense witness for the White House. First, he pretty much rendered Rudy Giuliani as a conspiracy-addled fool.

On July 19, Mayor Giuliani raised, and I rejected, the conspiracy theory that VP Biden would have been influenced in his duties as VP by money paid to his son. ... I have known Biden for 24 years. He is an honorable man and I hold him in the highest regard...
Then he explained how opposed he was to blackjacking Ukraine over military aid for the purposes of enlisting that country in the effort to ratfck the 2020 election.

I opposed the hold on U.S. security assistance as soon as I learned about it on July 18, and thought we could turn it around before it the Ukrainians ever knew or became alarmed about it. I did not know the reason for the hold, but I viewed it as a U.S. policy problem.

'Disgusting': Nikki Haley And George Conway Go At It On Twitter

Donald Trump champion and former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley crossed swords Monday on Twitter with attorney George Conway, husband of White House counselor Kellyanne Conway.

Haley lashed out at Conway for calling Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) “lying trash” in a tweet Saturday after Stefanik complained that Republicans were shut down at House impeachment hearings. Conway attacked the congresswoman, retweeted a list of speaking times for Republicans at the hearing — and urged his 775,000 followers on Twitter to contribute to her opponent’s campaign.

Politics / A big correction from Volker

1. A big correction from Volker

Volker, like European Union Gordon Sondland before him, was forced to correct his testimony after other witnesses called it into question.

The most important clarification came with regard to a July 10 meeting in which Sondland has now admitted he brought up investigations with Ukrainian leaders — after previously not disclosing that. Volker had previously testified that there was no mention of the investigations Trump and Rudolph W. Giuliani were seeking during that meeting. But other witnesses indicated then-National Security Adviser John Bolton shut down the meeting because Sondland broached them.

So on Tuesday, Volker confirmed it, saying Sondland made “a general comment about investigations” toward the end of the meeting -- but that he might not have been around for some of the fallout.

He added: “I think all of us thought it was inappropriate.”

Very good news.
