Sports Forum / Re: CIAA Tournament coming to ESPN platform
« on: Today at 12:45:29 PM »
There is a good and a bad with this IMHO.  The CIAA tournament is in transition and if your fans don't show as they used to it could be a negative. CIAA tourney wasn't about the basketball IMHO but the glitz and celebrities around it.  When the Tourney was still in the triangle and my buddies were trying to get me to go they never mentioned basketball, all they talked about was me coming to see the Woo Woos.  The halftime cheerleader competition was as big a draw as the games.  Also, the vendor court was spectacular.  Mr. CIAA (is he still alive?) walking around the arena constantly changing his wardrobe was also a big hit.  So if all of the pageantries are missing you might be back on Aspire before you know it.

While I certainly think he has the right to be concerned about attendance. And when looking at JSU's attendance and game day atmosphere for homecoming I can see how one would want that. However, these comments are not how to engender excitement about your program.

Also, JSU didn't JUST have the game. It was a total game day experience. The 50th J-sette reunion was a draw. The game. Coach Sanders and coming off a win against the reigning SWAC champions all helped to amp that game day experience and inspire people to come to the game.

Saying you want your players to have the experience of playing in front of a packed stadium is one thing. But saying it's not a good homecoming is another. Homecoming at an HBCU is as much about everything OTHER than the game as it is about the game. It is a cultural experience.
So was he talking from an attendance of the game standpoint or overall????

He was talking attendance...in the stadium from what I could ascertain. Saying it's not a good homecoming because people aren't in the stadium is very one sided. Homecoming...even game day is a whole experience that doesn't just involve who is in the stadium. Again, I think every coach wants everyone in the stadium but there is much more to the homecoming game day experience than what goes on in the stadium.
But the coaches and players mostly experience homecoming from the support received in the stands from the fans don't they? From my experience Coaches/players experience very little of the other homecoming events to limit distractions.  So I guess it's a matter of perspective.

17,000 is great for a MEAC school.

In fact, that is a great number for any FCS school. Maybe he need to stop looking at what JSU is doing. Jackson State has had a history of great attendance. Besides, the demographics of the Norfolk area will not allow but for a limited amount of fans. Just what present of the relative small black population (100,000) in that area is he expecting to attend his games?
????  What in the world are you talking about? It's called "Homecoming",  That's when alumni come home from wherever they are, not just the locals.  So yeah if NSU only has about a 20K students/alumni base, 17k is a great number. :tiptoe:

The conversation, to me, was indirectly about the overall attendance for his program. Homecoming was just an example for one game. He is wanting it full every game. So unless he plays some other close HBCUs, and draw some of their fans, he will get his attendance from the 100,000 black folks that live in the Norfolk area. Where else would he get them? Its not like they are a National brand.
Was Odoms' comment about overall attendance or about homecoming?  At most HBCU the single biggest money home game is homecoming.  If you can't draw more people to homecoming than all your other home games your school has a problem.

Big Worm said he may not be able to do a lot of things but he can do the math, 13,000 x $20 = $260K.

Does Norfolk have the buy a ticket to tailgate situation?

IMO, DI programs should not be scheduling programs like VUL.  NSU could have done a lot better by scheduling a DII program, particularly a HBCU DII program.

 Agreeing with you 110%. NSU would have done better scheduling an old CIAA rival instead of VUL for homecoming. But this ship has sailed.... 2022: Make it better.
I was in total agreement also until I looked at the Jags 2019 schedule and saw Edward Waters and VUL both scheduled in the same year.

Shiiid, Thelma is about 68 and still looks good.  I'll never forget the time I drooled all over her table at the CIAA tournament in Charlotte.  She seemed down to earth, talked, and took a picture with me on my phone even though she was selling pictures for $35.

I took this 10 years ago.

You're the reason she travels with a security detail.
Prove it!!

For your information, she called me over to the table.  She had no detail then.  So since I stopped going to the CIAA a couple of years after that when she had no detail, she probably got the detail for your creepy lurking, stalking ass. ::)

War crime: a crime (such as genocide or maltreatment of prisoners) committed during or in connection with war —usually used in plural

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/war%20crime

Even if Powell's 2003 speech to the U.N. could somehow be called a war crime, that was not all he did in life. It just shows a lack of perspective to reduce a person's life to the worst thing he's done.

He totally covered for war criminals in My Lai too.

Just because someone is black does not mean we cape for them. Him at his worst was helping murder and cover up for murderers. He's a war criminal who will be left in the dust bin of history.
This is why I bring up you are a pedophile every opportunity I get.
