I just dropped my wife off at the GWB to get to work in the City, and there are all sorts of TV vans from CNN, NBC, CBS, ABC and local stations reporting.

Christie is a bully, and the chickens have come home to roost, and as Soflo mentioned, his future ambitions are toast.  Knowing Christie he is going to get other people to take the fall in Bridgegate.

Closing the GWB at rush hour is just crazy!  Too conduct a "traffic study" on a 14 lane bridge (7 lanes in each direction) at rush hour is STUPID!  Interstate 95, Routes 1 &9, Route 4, the Palisades Interstate Parkway, Route 46 along with local roads transports traffic in Northern New Jersey to NYC and New England.  The NY legislature has subpoenaed a former Port Authority executive appointed by Christie at noon today.  Ironically Christie has scheduled a press conference at 11:00 now.  Christie is in trouble, and the Tea Party and Hillary are loving it.

I have been through a New York City/New Jersey rush hour.  It is not fun.

Democrats may want to learn a little from Thomas Jefferson, who is like the grandfather of the Democratic Party.  He played political hardball when it came to campaigning and opponents.  He makes some of the ladder day republicans like Karl Rove and the late Lee Atwater look soft.

The know the election is two years off, but you can bet the Dems will not let this die.

I recall how "America's Mayor" Rudy Guiliani pissed off the FDNY and they vowed to derail his presidential aspirations.  Guiliani skipped the early Republican primaries and waited for Florida, and the FDNY and their counterparts in Florida killed his chances.

I think Christie knew, but there was direct line to connect him.  I recall the line from a fellow Lincoln alum Gil Scott-Heron from the H2O Blues, "If Nixon knew Ag new, but Ag didn't know enough to stay out of jail".

Adding to Christie's troubles, the Record's Linh Tat reported Wednesday that emergency vehicles were delayed in responding to four medical situations -- including an unconscious 91-year-old woman who later died -- because of the traffic caused by the lane closures.

FROM ALL THAT I HAVE READ, CHRISTIE IS A MICRO MANAGER.  THIS HAS BEEN CONFIRMED FROM VARIOUS SOURCES.  DOES ANYONE REALLY BELIEVE THAT HIS STAFF AND POLITICAL APOINTEES ON THE GW BRIDGE COMMISSION WOULD/COULD HAVE TAKEN SUCH ACTIONS AGAINST THE MAYOR OF FT. LEE, NJ WITHOUT ANY PRIOR KNOWLEDGE BY THE GOVERNOR?  LOOK AT THE E-MAILS FOR YOURSELF.  "TIME FOR SOME TRAFFIC PROBLEMS IN FT. LEE".  THE RESPONSE WAS A SIMPLE ACKNOWLEDGING REPLY.  IT DOESN'T TAKE A GENIUS TO SEE THAT SOME PRIOR COORDINATION ON THIS DECISION HAD ALREADY BEEN MADE.  IT IS SIMPLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE THOSE ALREADY THROWN UNDER THE BUS BY CHRISTIE WILL CRACK AND COME FROM BEHIND THE SHIELD OF THE 5TH AMENDMENT.  PLAUSIBLE DENIABILITY, MY ASS!!  STATE AND FEDERAL LAWS WERE BROKEN AND THAT IS ALREADY BEING PURSUED BY CRIMINAL PROSECUTORS.  CIVIL LAWSUITS BY THE FAMILIES WHO LOST LOVED ONES AGAINST THE STATE ARE BEING INITIATED.  THE UNMITIGATED HUBRIS OF A SINGLE MAN IS COMING BACK TO HAUNT HIM.   YES, THIS HAS ONLY JUST BEGUN.

It’s still unclear which federal law might have been broken in this scenario. The federal honest services fraud statute — recently narrowed by a U.S. Supreme Court ruling — requires evidence of bribes or kickbacks, which don’t appear to be at issue here. Obstruction-of-justice inquiries, however, can often spring from political scandals and cover-ups.

State law could prove more useful for prosecutors. In New Jersey, a public servant may be convicted of “official misconduct” for a breach of a prescribed duty related to the office with the intention of “injuring or depriving” another person of a benefit. The crime of official misconduct is a second-degree offense that can carry a prison sentence of five to 10 years.

...........yeah, saw Rachel's program last nite.  Also saw Chris Matthews' show which immediately precedes Rachel's.  Between the two of them, they pretty much eviscerated the Big Guy.

Look, Christie's entire "defense" that he didn't know a DAMN thing, and was betrayed by staff simply strains credulity.  As several of the panelists on MSNBC mentioned last nite, Christie is a guy who PRIDES himself on his management skills and being in control.

Not sure whether this scandal will linger as we proceed toward 2016, but no doubt it will add ammunition to Christie's opponents for the '16 GOP presidential nomination.

Man, if y'all think the 2012 GOP presidential nomination process was a clown show, with crackpots like Rand Paul, Marco Rubio and others of that ilk threatening to join the fray,  you ain't seen NOTHING yet.  :o

In the eyes of one former George W. Bush aide, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) could stand to profit from the George Washington Bridge traffic troubles.

In a Friday interview with ABC's "Good Morning America," Matthew Dowd expressed his belief that Christie's "contrite" and "humble" tone in Thursday's apology demonstrated his skill at dismissing the scandal in a swift fashion. Dowd served as chief strategist for the victorious 2004 Bush reelection campaign.

WASHINGTON -- The New Jersey state Assembly is stepping up its investigation into "Bridgegate," announcing Monday that it has created a special investigatory committee to focus on the issue.

The committee, which will have subpoena power and a special counsel, will be led by Assemblyman John Wisniewski (D), who also chairs the chamber's transportation committee. Wisniewski has been leading the effort to figure out why New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's (R) administration closed access lanes to the George Washington Bridge in Fort Lee, N.J., in September.

"The evidence that has come out in recent weeks makes clear that this now goes above and beyond a transportation issue and goes into the highest ranks of the executive branch," Wisniewski said in a statement Monday. "A concerted and focused investigation with increased resources is now needed, and I look forward to continuing to uncover answers for the people of New Jersey with these new tools at hand. This investigation will continue with increased intensity."

Last week, the state Assembly released documents related to the bridge scandal obtained in a subpoena of the records of former Port Authority official David Wildstein, a Christie appointee. The documents showed that Bridget Anne Kelly, a deputy chief of staff to Christie, was involved in coordinating the closures, despite the governor's earlier assertion that no one in his office was involved.

Until last week, members of the Christie administration -- and the governor himself -- claimed that two of the three bridge access lanes in Fort Lee were shut down as part of a traffic study. But the released emails and text messages indicate there was a pettier, political motive at play, and that the closures were possibly intended as retribution against the Democratic mayor of Fort Lee, who did not endorse Christie's reelection bid.

The New Jersey transportation committee also subpoenaed testimony from Wildstein, who ordered the closures. But last week, he invoked his Fifth Amendment and refused to testify.

Wisniewski has said impeachment might be a possibility if evidence shows Christie was directly involved in the lane closures, which lasted from Sept. 9 to 13, causing massive traffic jams and delaying emergency personnel.

Christie’s staff cut access to Jersey City mayor who would not endorse him

View Photo Gallery — Christie works to contain bridge scandal: Gov. Chris Christie’s decision to oust Bill Stepien and Bridget Anne Kelly, aides implicated in the burgeoning scandal over George Washington Bridge lane closures, demonstrated the blunt force that he is willing to use to contain a crisis, even if it means exiling members of his innermost circle.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s administration cut off the access of the newly elected mayor of Jersey City to top state officials last summer, documents released Monday show. The move came after the Democratic mayor declined to endorse the Republican governor’s reelection.

Christie’s staff initially set up a raft of meetings for Mayor Steven Fulop with state appointees shortly after he took office in July, according to e-mails and text messages released by Jersey City in response to a public records request by the Jersey Journal.

What Chris Christie has already lost

Chris Cillizza 2:10 PM ET

No matter what happens from here on out, the New Jersey governor has lost a lot.

But the meetings were scrubbed a few week later, about the time that aides to the Republican governor apparently learned that Fulop was not going to back him.

The treatment of Fulop feeds the perception that the Christie administration has used the governor’s office to punish people viewed as political enemies. The episode occurred several months before Christie aides orchestrated a scheme to paralyze traffic in Fort Lee, N.J., in an apparent act of political spitefulness against that town’s Democratic mayor, Mark Sokolich.

Christie’s spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

When asked at a news conference last week about the incident, Christie acknowledged that he has had conflicts with Fulop but said his administration was assisting Jersey City in several areas.

“We’ve continued to work with Jersey City over the course of time since he’s been mayor,” Christie said, adding: “I don’t know about specific meetings or what’s going on, but certainly, you know, I will look into all those things. But the fact is that what Mayor Fulop knows is, when we agree with him from a policy perspective, we’ll work with him. When we disagree with him, we’ll express those disagreements. And sometimes that’ll mean friction.”

The new documents show that the Christie administration initially took a warm approach to Fulop, a former Jersey City councilman who soundly defeated the incumbent mayor in a May election.

Christie called Fulop the night of his victory.

“Needless to say, congratulations on a tremendous job,” Christie political adviser Bill Stepien wrote in a text message to Fulop the next day. “I know the Governor reached out last night to relay his own congratulations. Let me know if we can help set up any meetings for you in Trenton as you enter transition with relevant commissioners, agency heads, etc.”

In late June, shortly before Fulop was set to take office, Christie’s then-deputy chief of staff, Bridget Anne Kelly, reached out to the incoming Jersey City mayor. (Christie fired Kelly last week after it emerged that she helped set in motion the Fort Lee traffic gridlock with an e-mail to a Port Authority of New York and New Jersey official that read, “Time for some traffic problems in Fort Lee.”)

In her friendly e-mail to Fulop, Kelly said the governor’s office wanted to facilitate meetings with key state officials he should know in his new post.

“Congratulations, Mayor Elect!” she wrote. “What an exciting time for you, and for the City. We’re looking forward to working closely with you and your Administration.”

She followed up a week later with an agenda detailing “Mayor’s Day,” a slew of back-to-back meetings, set to be held July 23 at Jersey City’s City Hall with top state officials. Among those scheduled to attend were state appointees representing the transportation, treasury, community affairs, economic development and recovery and rebuilding agencies.

“If there seems to be any Department missing, we can certainly try to ad or schedule another time,” Kelly wrote, adding that staff from the governor’s office would be on hand, as well.

Stepien texted Fulop again July 12, writing: “I know the Gov is sending quite a contingent of his Cabinet up to you on the 23rd. Let us know how we can continue to work closely together.”

By July 16, the group of state appointees headed to Jersey City had grown to eight, including Bill Baroni, the deputy executive director of the Port Authority. (Baroni resigned last month amid building questions about the Fort Lee gridlock.)

Around July 18, however, Christie advisers learned from Fulop allies that the mayor would not be backing his reelection bid, according a spokeswoman for Fulop.

The cancellations then poured in. By July 22, all of the state officials had backed out of Mayor’s Day, citing scheduling conflicts and offering no alternative dates, according to an e-mail from a Fulop scheduler to the mayor.

Fulop’s attempts to reschedule the meetings went nowhere.

In an August e-mail to Baroni, the mayor wrote, “I am not sure if it is a coincidence that your office cancelled a meeting several weeks back that seemed to be simultaneous to other political conversations elsewhere that were happening. Prior to that you were always very responsive and I sincerely hope the two issues are not related.”

The documents do not show any response from Baroni or other top Christie officials.

In a statement Monday, Fulop said the e-mails “speak for themselves.”

“Our administration has sought to operate in a professional and cooperative manner with the Christie Administration,” he said. “Whether cabinet officials meetings, Port Authority lease negotiations or reforming our municipal pension system; it is my hope that State decisions be based on the merits.”

Last week, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie gave a 107-minute-long news conference last week, pirouetting from skeptic to penitent on the George Washington Bridge scandal. Whether you like his politics or not, you have to admit it was one hell of a show.

For four months, Christie had made fun of the whole incident. Then, overnight, he was forced to acknowledge it was a serious problem that his close aides had instigated as a childish act of political payback.

Suddenly, we saw a Chris Christie we’d never seen before. He was embarrassed. He was contrite. He was even — almost — humble.

.....

Christie might be asked to testify in two ongoing investigations, by the state Legislature and the Port Authority of New Jersey and New York, which could drag on for weeks, and federal officials are probing his alleged misuse of Hurricane Sandy funds. Meanwhile, the U.S. attorney for New Jersey is weighing a possible criminal investigation. Shutting down a vital public roadway for political games is, in fact, a crime.

Bill Press: Issa exposed on Benghazi (http://thehill.com/business-a-lobbying/194543-bill-press-issa-exposed-on-benghazi)

By Bill Press - 01/06/14 05:11 PM EST

The Committee on Oversight and Government Reform is one of the most powerful committees in Congress. As the House’s watchdog committee, with almost unlimited investigative authority, it can be used as a force for good, as it was under former Chairman Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) when it targeted waste of taxpayer dollars in government contracting, exposed the illegal business practices of Enron and held pharmaceutical companies accountable for high prices of prescription drugs.

.....

But, in a lengthy report published on Dec. 29, The New York Times refuted that claim. After months of on-the-ground investigation by reporters in Libya, the Times found no evidence of involvement by al Qaeda in the assault. It was waged, instead, by local militants, including some members of militias we had helped in their efforts to overthrow Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi. Not only that, concluded the Times, contrary to “claims by some members of Congress,” the attack “was fueled in large part by anger at an American-made video denigrating Islam.”

Clearly, under Issa, the House Oversight Committee has failed to meet the first principle of its mission statement: “Americans have a right to know that the money Washington takes from them is well spent.” Issa has instead wasted money, devoting a year and a half to manufacturing a major scandal about Benghazi, only to be exposed by The New York Times as fanning a pack of lies.

CHRISTIE IS A POLITICIAN AND HE HAS APPARENTLY EXERCISED POLITICAL MUSCLE JUST LIKE SO MANY OTHER POLITICIANS OF ALL STRIPES, HAVE DONE.  HIS PROBLEMS IS THAT IT APPEARS THAT HE HAS LIED ABOUT IT, NOT SO MUCH THAT HE DID IT.

I DON'T BELIEVE THAT THE AMERICAN PUBLIC IS SO NAIVE AS TO NOT FULLY UNDERSTAND THE NATURE OF POLITICAL POWER AND THE EXERCISING, THEREOF.

FBI questions Hoboken mayor’s aides, sources say
01/22/14 09:00 PM—Updated 01/23/14
By Michael Isikoff

FBI agents have begun questioning witnesses in the investigation into whether New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s aides threatened to cut off Hurricane Sandy relief money to Hoboken unless the city’s mayor backed a billion-dollar development project, three sources with direct knowledge of the probe told NBC News on Wednesday.

Federal prosecutors and agents have also instructed key witnesses to preserve all documents and emails relating to the allegations by Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer, these sources said.

After Zimmer gave her account of the alleged threat to federal prosecutors on Sunday, federal agents questioned Dan Bryan, Zimmer’s chief of staff, and Juan Melli, her communications director, the sources said.

Meanwhile, according to a new Rutgers-Eagleton poll, Chris Christie’s favorability rating has fallen to 46%, down 22 points from just before his reelection.

The two Zimmer aides are among at least five witnesses who Zimmer told the FBI could confirm that she had previously told them about the conversation she says she had with Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno last May. Zimmer has alleged that during that conversation in a parking lot, the lieutenant  governor linked Sandy funding to backing of the development project.

David Mello, a member of the Hoboken City Council, told NBC News that Zimmer told him about the Guadagno conversation last summer, either in late July or early August as they were walking home after an event. “I distinctly remember [Zimmer] saying that the lieutenant governor said, ‘If this came out, she would deny it,’” he said.

“I thought it was absurd and outrageous,” said Mello, adding that he pressed Zimmer whether she would speak out publicly about what she said took place. “She told me, ‘It was a done deal that [Christie] was going to be re-elected” and she did not want to jeopardize further funding for the city, he said.

Mello, a Zimmer ally who said he strongly opposed Christie’s re-election, said he is arranging through the Hoboken city counsel to provide his account to the U.S. attorney’s office.

Bryan and Melli declined further comment, citing a request from the office of U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman that city officials not discuss the probe publicly. “I can confirm that the mayor has said that the U.S. attorney’s office is in Hoboken and talking to people,” said Melli.

Guadagno in a statement to reporters Tuesday adamantly denied Zimmer’s account of the May conversation, calling  it “false” and “offensive.”  A Christie press spokesman has also strongly denied Zimmer’s account and suggested that it contradicts earlier statements she has made that were supportive of the Republican governor.

“It’s very clear partisan politics are at play here as Democratic mayors with a political axe to grind come out of the woodwork,” spokesman Colin Reed said in an email last weekend.

Chris Christie’s poll tumble — and why it matters
By Sean Sullivan
January 23 at 6:30 am

A longstanding cornerstone of New Jersey Republican Gov. Chris Christie's popularity (and why national GOP strategists are drawn to him) has been his cross-party appeal. But a major traffic scandal has diminished Christie's luster in the eyes of Democrats -- and fast.

Christie's favorability has plunged 19 percentage points since last November, according to a new Rutgers-Eagleton poll of New Jersey voters. Among Democratic voters, it's down 26.  His job approval rating has dipped a whopping 22 points among Democrats, driving the overall drop from 68 percent to 53 percent.

Other recent polls have also shown the bridge scandal, in which aides to Christie snarled traffic from Fort Lee to the George Washington Bridge in an apparent act of political retribution, has whittled Christie's once robust Democratic support, which held up throughout most of 2013. Christie's approval rating among New Jersey Democrats dipped from 47 percent to 38 percent in a Monmouth University/Asbury Park Press poll. Just 36 percent of New Jersey Democratic voters said they approved of the job Christie was doing in a recent Quinnipiac University poll, compared to 55 percent who said they disapproved. That's roughly a 180 degree turnaround from his numbers in early 2013.

Nationally, the news isn't much better. Christie's unfavorable rating rose sharply among independents (+18) and even quicker among Democrats (+25), according to a Pew Research Center-USA Today poll released this week.

Here's why this is such a big deal: Christie has carefully cultivated a reputation as a no-nonsense problem solver who's committed to getting things done -- party affiliation be damned. (Who can forget the images of him touring storm damage with President Obama in the wake of Hurricane Sandy? Or his willingness to lash congressional Republicans for not approving Sandy recovery money quickly enough?)

Working with the other side to get stuff done was a big part of Christie's ticket to a second term. And it's a major part of the lane he occupies leading up to the 2016 presidential election. An appeal beyond Republicans' historically small base in the Garden State is what made Christie such a promising candidate nationally. But after the bridge scandal, that core advantage (or at least the perception of that core advantage) appears to be slipping.

The good news for the governor is that his support among Republicans and independents has held steadier. His approval rating is 83 percent among New Jersey Republicans according to the Rutgers poll. A majority of independents in the state say they approve of the job he's doing. His favorable ratings among Republicans and independents in the Pew poll are unchanged from a year ago. (A Fox News national poll shows troubling signs for Christie among Republicans, but it speaks more about predictions for him than their own ratings of the governor.)

In one way, this could be good for Christie. There's been considerable skepticism about his bipartisan maneuverings among the GOP's conservative base. But if he's no longer viewed as a darling of Democrats, it could boost his cred on the right. (And that explains why his team has been trying to turn the bridge scandal into a partisan scrum.)

The bottom line, though, is that if Christie's appeal to Democrats is diminished, he becomes less of a general election threat in the eyes of Democratic strategists.

There are no other Republicans in the prospective 2016 field who have the demonstrated ability to connect with the other party that Christie does -- with the possible exception of former Florida governor Jeb Bush. If Christie's forfeits that position of strength -- it's too early now to conclude that he has or hasn't -- the lane he occupies probably goes unfilled.

For Democratic operatives with an eye on keeping the White House in 2016, that would be welcome news.
