Study finds many corporations pay tax rate of effectively zero
By Bernie Becker - 06/01/11 12:01 AM ET

A number of U.S. corporations had an effective tax rate of less than zero in recent years, a new study has found.

Citizens for Tax Justice (CTJ) released an examination on Wednesday that said that a dozen major companies had, between them, an average effective tax rate of roughly -1.5 percent between 2008 and 2010 — well below the top marginal corporate rate of 35 percent.

The liberal-leaning group’s analysis comes more than a quarter-century after it released a similar report that is widely credited with adding momentum to the push for the last successful overhaul of the tax code, which was completed in 1986.

At this point, it does not make any sense to raise taxes since there are so many ways corporations can dodge paying them.

Simply raising them will increase cause even more American corps. to leave the country.

Unfortunately, Paying taxes has become a global game and if we want companies to pay them, we have to play ball. This means lowering our Tax Rate as well as closing various loop holes.

I imagine that we have to cut our tax rate in half or more. I am thinking anywhere from 12% - 16%.

It sucks but the Corporations have control and there really isn't anything we can do.

West Coast,

The first part of your sentence is indubitably true.

The second part is what they want you to be believe in order to keep the first part true.

Please reconsider.  We shouldn't buy into or promote the second part.

IMO.

No, I do not.  I can listen to this all day.  I expect sensible economic policy analysis from him.  If Bill Clinton continued to listen to him, I doubt that he would have signed the bill that repealed Glass-Steagall.  BTW it helps when customers have money.

In his video he talked about the divide created between union and non-union.  He could have easily talked about the divide between Blacks and Whites.  This is part of what the column on welfare and Whites mentioned.

What I am tired of is conservative/trickle down/supply side economics that created this mess.  These kinds of economic policies created the panics of the 1800s, the Great Depression and the recessions we have had since including this one.

As for taxes I can almost agree 100% with a statement you made.  Tax cuts do not create jobs.  Demand for products and services do.

You almost got it.  If the customers have jobs, especially good paying jobs, then they will have money to spend.  Businesses will be able to sell products and offer services.

With lower taxes, especially on the rich, expect cutbacks on police, fire departments, emergency personnel, and education.

Okay. So now they're (corporations) paying NO taxes, and prices are still high(er). Please explain that away....
