Title: WHAT OTHER COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY DID YOU SERIOUSLY CONSIDER
Post by: Aggie D. on April 17, 2011, 07:39:48 PM
Besides the college or university you attended what other schools did you seriously consider when making the decision to go to college?  Why?

I really wanted to go to college out-of-state.   I knew I wanted to attend an HBCU but within driving distance from home, which for me was five hours or less.  I've always been impressed with the history of the AUC but it was not a match for me, nothing about going to college in South Carolina was appealing, and I did not know much about Tennessee.  That pretty much left V-A and the DC metro area.  Hampton, Howard, and Virginia State were the other institutions I seriously considered.  However family tradition, the heavy N.C. A & T influence that goes with being from Greensboro, and a full scholarship sealed the deal for me to head to Aggieland.

I sent my SATs to NCA&T, College of Charleston, Coker College, and Fayetteville State.  The Ron McNair influence steered me toward A&T; I had some girlfriends that were applying to FSU; I visited Coker during my senior year and the guy I was dating was a student there; CoC, I don't even know why.  In my heart, I wanted to go to Fisk, but I knew I had no way of getting there.  Financial difficulties during my freshman year almost had me transferring to Winthrop, but things worked out so that I was able to stay at A&T. Looking back on that whole picking a college experience, I really needed some guidance.

Howard, Hampton, and Morehouse.

Attending an in-state HBCU was out of the question for me because I wanted to do something different than what all of my other classmates from E. E. Smith High School were doing and I wanted to get far away from home as possible.  I did a lot of research on all 4 schools my senior year, including my major, job placement among graduating seniors, department reputation, cost, marching band scholarships, athletics, and campus life.  After I weighed everything out, I chose Jackson State University.  I still wonder, at times, what would have happened had I gone to either one of those other universities.  I have a lot of former classmates who went on to attend those 3 institutions and they loved it.

Well being from North Carolina and attending Jackson State sure sounds different to me.  Bethune~Cookman, Clark~Atlanta, Fisk, FAMU, Hampton, Howard, Morehouse, South Carolina State, Spellman, Tennessee State, and Xavier are a few of the out-of-state HBCUs I remember students tossing around back when I was a high school student in North Carolina but Jackson State was just not on anyones radar.  Good for you.  I can relate to your desire to want to go somewhere different.  Just curious, were there a lot of students from North Carolina at JSU?

My freshman year alone, I met 10 students from North Carolina.  One of the star basketball players was from Elizabeth City.  I remember in 2003 when we were picking up our baggage at the airport in Indy for the CCC, one of the football players noticed my UNC shirt and hat and asked me if I was from NC.  I told him I was from Fayetteville and he told me that he had graduated from Winston-Salem Carver HS.  Real cool dude who introduced me to his frat brothers (Ques) and looked out for me.  One of my best friends my freshman year was from Greenville and actually transferred from NCA&T.  Surprisingly, there were quite a few students back then who were from the Carolinas, DMV, and Miami.  Now, its even more.  I ran into a lady in the library last week who was wearing a UNC shirt.  I told her I liked her shirt and if she was from the crib.  She said that she is from Raleigh, got her masters at Fayetteville State, and is currently a Ph.d candidate here.  The department that I do work study in requires that we process a lot of letters for incoming and transfer students.  There are a lot of students who are coming to JSU this fall from Charlotte and Raleigh for some reason but even more who are coming from the upper east coast.  When you look at our athletic rosters, you'll notice that we have a lot of athletes from NJ, NY, Philly, Baltimore, etc.

Jackson State really was not on too many people's radar my senior year.  One of the drummajors and myself were the only ones going while everyone else was heading to Howard, Hampton, all the NC HBCUs and PWCs, and the AUC.  Since I graduated, more students from E. E. Smith High have ventured to the deep south to Tuskegee, AAMU, Xavier, PV, Southern, Grambling, Florida A&M, and Bethune-Cookman.  One of the head drummajors at BCU graduated after I did.  I was a very popular student at E. E. Smith and a lot of students figured that if I could do well far away from home at JSU, they could too.  The culture and climate deep south is very different from back home in NC but the HBCU feel of support and authenticity is still there.

Cool.  I am not surprised at students coming from the East Coast to the South to go to school.  Most of T's out-of-state students were from Virginia on up.  However, I do not remember meeting too many students from the deep South while in school.  There were of course students from South Carolina and Georgia and a few from Texas but not to many pass Atlanta.  I'm sure the culture down there is different.  I remember visiting Southern for the first time while in college.  In a casual conversation I started representing the South to students from Central State and Lincoln.  Cats from Baton Rouge were like, "Where you from?", I was like North Carolina, and they all threw their arms up saying, "That ain't the South, that's East Coast".  I was thinking, word, North Carolina is very much the South to me.

  Trust me when I say that I see where they are coming from.  The culture in NC and VA is totally different from the deep south.  The music, food, jargon, way of life, pace, and level of progression is like night and day.  I met an old head (Sonic Boom) who was from Chicago and came to JSU in 1996.  She graduated in 2000 then went on the receive an engineering degree from A&T in 2002.  She even notices the difference in quality of life and culture between the 2 regions.  NC may not be "east coast" to the extent of NYC and Boston but the state definitely has more in common with those areas (economically, socially, politically, urban culture, jargon) than MS, GA, LA, and AL.

Howard: Just because it was Howard and the DC factor.....

FAMU:Liked the vibe of FAMU, good school, but of course my people thought it was way too far....

Tuskegee: Went to summer camp there, LOVED the school, BUT the town it was in and that HEAT, was the draw back for me....

Univ of South Carolina: $$$$$/attended numerous camps/functions/knew alot of people that had either went and/or was going.....

Clemson: Even though I KNOW I had NO intentions of going to school up in those woods   application was free, scholarships were rolling in, but other than that it was a thanks but no thanks your letter goes in the pile on the corner of my dresser...

Tenn State---I can't remember exactly why I applied but I remember hearing or seeing something about them as it pertained to the Atlanta Classic and figured I'd look into the school....

SCSU-Being from SC all of my friends were going to State so I marked them off the list. I basically applied just for the hell of it.

Winthrop: Applied just to be applying....
JCSU(Still don't recall applying there BUT they sent me a nice scholarship packet  )

Being from Greensboro I wanted to leave home to go to college.  I applied to and was accepted to Virginia State, Hampton, and of course NCCU.   NCCU was the lease expensive plus scholarship money.

My freshman year we had students from along the eastern seaboard from Virginia to New York.   There was one young lady from Baton Rouge.  She came to NCCU because her parents are NCCU graduates.   Her father was an assistant football coach at Southern U back in 1969.

NCCU, NCA&T, Livingstone, Howard and East Carolina

Thank God I got some sense and made my final choice after attending the NCCU vs. NCA&T Turkey Day Classic in Greensboro, NC, in November 1967. Being from "Down East" in the state of North Carolina, that was the first time that I had seen NCC vs. N&T play, when I was in High School.  The Fans, Students and Alumni from both sides, were off of the chain, as usual. Yes, NCCU lost the game that year, in the last minute or so, but NCC won me for Life.  ;D

I was really seriously leaning towards NCA&T until NCCU completely woke me up, during and after that game.    :hugs:

Take care!

Well for me, I had options, however at the end of the day, I wanted to continue Family tradition and attend Southern University.  Being reared in a town that was, and still IS in some ways Race-Oriented, I did not want to endure Racism as much as I did.  Or so I thought... I chose an HBCU and had no clue I would experience Racism/Classism in my own Race...
Eye Opening experience for me however.  I would not change a thing.

Other Universities of Interests...

I had already made my mind up to attend Howard. Got there to to tour the campus/surrounding area and it was awful.

Students looked like gangsters, and you couldnt tell them apart from the general gangsters in the area. buildings didnt look up to par for the most part either.

The price of things was kind of an issue too. I know DC has a relatively pricey standard, and I have no issue with that. I refuse however to pay for a high price of living to live in a hood.

Georgia Tech waitlisted me before letting me in....I refused after that.

Went to Brown University  and was completely put off when this lady, who could barely speak english her self, complain about not being able to understand my accent. Joke of a school....probably the only IVY that would have accepted me though.

UCLA - Childhood dream to attend the hometown school. Ended up not going because they were going to make me walk on to the track team instead of offering a scholarship.

Cal State Long Beach - Offered me a track scholarship

University of Georgia - Recruited me for track

Cal State Fullerton - Recruited me for track and offered a scholarship

Alabama State U. - They visited my school and convinced me to apply

Only other school I applied to was Howard, which I really wanted to go to because  I grew up in Tuskegee and I wanted to go away.  Administrative SNAFUs caused me to get accepted late (by the time I was accepted at Howard, TU had accepted me and offered a scholarship).  The final Straw was when Howard sent me a letter 3 weeks before it was time to go saying they had  lost all of my Financial Aid info and I had to re apply for Financial aid in order to get the scholarship that Howard's Engineering school had offered me.

Went to TU, parents let me live on campus, and I've never regretted it.

FAMU - Spent time on campus during my dad's tenure there.  It was during my elementary and middle school years where I was getting old enough to begin understanding the HBCU culture.  Had a lot of connections.

Morehouse - Mom worked at AU during my very early childhood years.  I was intrigued about the stories that she told about the AUC, both as separate universities, and as a single entity.

Tennessee St. - Had a great uncle who was an alum that encouraged my cousins and myself to visit and attend.  They were going through the desegregation suit with the St. of TN at the time.  Wasn't real sure of their future as an HBCU.

NC A&T - Another uncle who was a Aggie that thought that Greensboro was the center of the world.

Guys, I considered several schools.  I had a cousin who was a Morehouse FANATIC, but I knew my parents couldn't afford that private school tuition, and it was too far from South Florida.  So I only applied to two, FAMU and Florida State.

I only applied to FAMU because its my mother's alma mater.  But I graduated high school at a time (1975) when young negro lads with decent grades did not enroll in an HBCU if they could help it.  So during the summer after high school, I was really preparing for FL State.  I had a dorm assignment (Smith Hall), pre-registration, and everything.

But something in the back of my head told me that I should AT LEAST give FAMU a chance.  I had a dorm assignment there as well (Paddyfoote).  I knew my mom and I were taking the bus to Tallahassee, just didn't know where we'd tell the cab driver to take us until, literally, two weeks before it was time to head up.

I have ALWAYS breathed a sigh of relief that I made the choice that I did.

Applied to about 8 schools:

UNC Chapel-Hill - went to a summer program there, had a cousin that went there, but I always knew I really wanted to go to an HBCU. HS guidance counselor strongly recommended that I apply.

UNC Greensboro- not sure why I applied, never really strongly considered it. Blah school.

NC A&T - too many people from high school were going there. They were the first to offer a scholarship

NCCU - family school, but I wanted to leave NC. They offered slightly more $ than A&T, and I saw them as more of the "up and coming" HBCU in NC, which is a good thing.  This was probably my second choice.

Fayetteville State - I applied only because I knew they would offer a full scholarship. The school never impressed me, and always seemed blah.

Florida A&M - They offered money, but it was too far, and too hot. This was probably my third choice.

University of Pittsburgh - random, but they kept sending their application and scholarship info

HAMPTON UNIVERSITY - obviously the best choice

Before I sent applications, I thought about Morehouse but their admissions staff was very unimpressive when they visited my high school.  I remember they showed up late and seemed disorganized. JCSU had a great presentation, but I knew it was not for me.

NCCU - As bad as I hate to admit it was my first choice

Hampton - A close second

Morehouse - The MLK influence and being called "A Morehouse Man"

I ended up at St Aug because I had an older sister who graduated from there and my mom convinced me it was a "family school".  Enjoyed every minute there and have never had any regrets.

I actually had an athletic scholarship offer to Atlantic Christian College (now Barton in Wilson, NC) but never thought about accepting it.  It was just something about going to a PWC in 1973 that did not sit well with me.  At that time I would have had to burn my "black card", cut the big afro, and ditch the bell bottoms and platform shoes.  Just couldn't do it.  I had to have the black college experience.  Glad I did.  There is nothing like it.

GK you were as bad as me.  I only filled out three,  AAMU, Skegee and UofA.  Got accepted to all three.

Wasn't no way I was going to school at the Klan Institute of Alabama though.

You guys sound like me. My dad told me I could go anywhere I wanted to if I got a full scholarship otherwise I would be at Shaw University. Once I came to a bball game and saw the cheerleaders, I was done. I applied to Shaw, got in and proceeded to tryout (and become captain of) the cheerleading squad! My oldest brother spent a year at St. Aug and the rest of his life wishing he had gone to Shaw lol. My other brother, first cousin and I were all students at Shaw U at the same time. Ahhhh good memories!

TUSKEGEE was the only school I applied to. I am a TUSKEGEE baby, my parents met there and  married. I am SKEGEE proud. It  is something about the words to the TUSKEGEE SONG... TUSKEGEE THE PRIDE OF THE SWIFT GROWING SOUTH...I  put AAMU as second place for financial aid papers but never applied. The key was I left my junior year of high school to live with grandmother in North Carolina after my grandfather passed. I missed going to those football games sitting under the "shed" so I had to get back  NEVER  THOUGHT OF GOING ANYWHERE ELSE ... A VERY GOOD CHOICE I MADE....HEYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY TUSKEGEEEEEE!

At that time I would have had to burn my "black card", cut the big afro, and ditch the bell bottoms and platform shoes.

KHawk,

I insist that you stop telling my age...

I am not telling your age.  I am telling my age.  As a matter of fact, today is my birthday.  I am a very young 56 years old today.  I thank God for blessing and keeping me in spite and despite of my many shortcomings.  To God be the Glory!!!!

Good Question. When I started my College search in Spring 93 I sent my grades to all the HBCU's in Alabama except Concordia and Stillman. But I got exceptence letters from Miles,Tuskegee,Alabama St.,Alabama A&M, and Talladega. I have family ties to Miles,Alabama St.,NC A&T,and Tuskegee. So I have been surrounded by HBCUs all my life. But my decision was hard to choose after I had visited Miles,Alabama St.,Alabama A&M,and Tuskegee. So what I did I took some small pieces of paper wrote those schools names on them. Put them in a basket close my eyes and  just stuck my hand in the basket and grab a piece of paper. When I open my eyes I saw that I had pull Miles and that's how I got to attend Miles.

I'm sorry to say no HBCUs were on my list when I was considering where to go for undergraduate study. I just wasn't interested. To the my Mother's disappointment.   However, I made it up to her later.

I choose UC San Diego because it was in my parents' price range, a reasonable distance from home, and wasn't a popular destination among my high school classmates.
  :)

However, here are the other schools I was considering:
Stanford  (My first choice but too much $$$)
USC (Too close to home & too much $$$)
Loyola Marymount University (Too much $$$ for a school with no name recognition)
Cal State Dominquez Hills (Really to close to home)

Mills College  (Good school but not coed)
