I mean what should he stop doing or wearing. For example should a forty year old man wear Jordan's?

B4L:

Jordans are OK to wear, better to wear Jordan's than the store brands .  With all this snow here I have my Tims on and will contiue to wear them.

I agree with soflorattler, the hangin pants are not cool.  I've never had gold teeth, so I would also the gold teeth are a no no.  Tight fitting clothes, shirts, pants etc. are also no no's.

Locks:  fine

Cornrows:  ...especially if you have a receding hairline...boy stop...

Jeans and starter Jerseys as a general wardrobe?  (it can be ok every now and again depending on the event...ie football games, other sporting events)

Oh yes, yes!

Dangling his keys or fidgeting with his keys so you can see what kind
of car he drives.

The rosary as  a fashion  accesory

Unlaced Timberlands/Puffy coat/Jeans hanging off the butt/Skullcap w/The hoodie Look

Locs, leave that to young guys!!!

Basketball shorts(leave them at the gym or on the court) w/ the undershirt

White 3XL S T-shirt, Man Capris and Sneakers (although this style is hideous on men of any age)

You should NOT be living with your mama unless you are her primary caregiver due to her illness/age or you are recovering from a recent divorce

Hanging with 21-25 year olds in the club on a daily basis.....

Using money orders to pay your bills...get a free checking account please...

Cashing your check at the check cashing place and flaunting a wad like you've done something...if you don't have at least 3-5 times that amount in your bank account sit down....as a matter of fact sit your a-- down anyway flaunting a wad of cash.....

To you former high school football players especially in small-town USA....let it go baby...we know how great you were....Friday nights you are at the game bragging and acting a fool with the opposing teams fans..be a fan but remember you are grown now...

I think that is it for now..

I don't know about that. If you can pull a little young thang, I have nothing but admiration for you. GK and VG, nobody could tell you two nothing if you ended up turning out a little 21 year old boy. The experience will have you running to the gym killing yourself working out, putting color in your hair, and send you to Foxy Fashions to buy cloths.  Remember that episode of The Andy Griffith  Show where Aunt Bea was  dating and running the streets all night? It almost killed her.   ::) On second thought, maybe you two are on to something by steering clear of it.

At this point in my life the only thing I want a 21 year old to do for me is to point me in the direction of his older uncle, cousin, or brother....

They are nice to look at....REAALLLLL nice to look at, but I'm not looking for a boy toy...

You can do that for ANY man up to about 43. Although for the guys in the 30's you might have to include some season tickets to a Falcons game as well.

*If your locs aren't already long enough to make a ponytail, now is not the time to start them.

*If you have a culdesac hairline, just let it go...I promise we love bald heads too!

*Quit saying "I'm gonna just start life over"

*Calling me a baby and/or youngster (I'm 30) while trying to get my number.

*Wearing any fashion that I could find on the boys at my niece's middle school dance.

*Not owning at least one well tailored black suit for special occasions.

I guess it depends on the guy. For example my mother's youngest brother is 41 but dude looks like he's maybe early 30s. He is a weight room beast, and is in better shape than most dudes my age. He can get away with a lot of stuff from what he wears to the women that he dates. So I guess it all depends.

*If your locs aren't already long enough to make a ponytail, now is not the time to start them.

bear, everybody can't start with shoulder length hair. You got to start the locs first in order to get to the shoulder length.

Locs are like this:

Year one: "what in the hell am I doing" let me put a hat on.

Year two: "these things aren't done yet?"

Year three: "These things are beginning to look kind of nice"

Year four:   " oh, i know I look good!"

Year five:   " I'm ready to hit the runway"

Bear it's a very long road and every one has to pay the price and suffer for the first two and 1/2 years. I have just completed two years of growth and a year and a half of twisting. It's been pure hell but I'm beginning to see the light.  So when you see folks with nice dreds, just know that they have paid the price. Most folk can't or  are not willing to do it. my sister has tried twice and given up.

I don't think That is what she is saying, Cap....we know the process...several of my friends are going or have gone through it (it is a LOT of work being natural...I'll just slap the chemicals on my hair every 5 weeks)...she is simply saying that if you're 44 with a low cut, just go bald or keep the hairstyle you have....seeing a grown 40+ year old man with a wild afro or chicken scratch in his head isn't the best look....

I can deal with the locs though...no problem....but the cornrows need to go, ESPECIALLY if they start looking like wool.....at the very least keep them neat

What habits or fashion should a forty year old Black man leave behind? definitely sagging pants. Bad enough on those under 40, even worse for those over 40.
Extremely baggy clothes and oversized clothes - you are not rappers.
Getting with chicks young enough to be your daughters [or for those on the other side],
kids young enough to be your sons.  ;D But hey, whatever.
If you like it, I ain't gon stop ya.

What habits or fashion should a forty year old Black WOman leave behind? Weaves that look like chit and the back of a sheep's a--.  If you're going to wear one,
make it a good one. The goal is for it to look real.
Again, back to clothes that don't fit right. Hey, you're 40, you should know what
works on you by now.
I know cougars like em young, virile and everready, so I ain't going to hate on ya.
Just keep em in ya bedroom, don't bring em to the family reunion please.
Not getting along with other women - you just look and sound silly.

Any questions.  ;D

Since we went there, things a 40 year old woman should leave behind (really any woman over 25 I think).

*Purchasing anything in the juniors section of the department store. I don't care how small you are, get something in the petite section. Juniors clothes look cheap and well junior-ish.

*Bad weaves/wigs: We all know that your hair isn't jet black or platinum blonde. Find one that is both flattering and more natural looking.

*Sparkle lipgloss, glitter eyeliner, fairy dust face powder: These are for teenagers at a rave party not a grown woman with a real job (ie. Phaedra Parks...glitter eyeliner for real?)

*Not owning one quality pair of black pumps. C'mon lady! They don't have to be Yves Saint Laurent Tribitoo platforms, but just like a man needs a black suit you need a black pump.

*Must own one black dress that fits well and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion.

I could go on, but I will stop there.

Please allow me to add to both sexes - when you decide to date person with child/children, that's a package deal. You can't expect person to spend time with you/yours but not with their own  :nono2: and you've got to reciprocate...

Yep, that goes back to what you were saying about being jealous and selfish

I agree with everything everybody has said about women, but let me add..

*If you are 40+ and you've still got to sell your cooter cat to Jerome so you can get an outfit for the Blues Festival with Sir Charles Jones and Bobby Blue Bland, you really need to re-evaluate your spending habits...I won't make it a morality issue...

*A woman 40+ should be able to leave that entitlement mentality behind when it comes to what a man HAS to do for you.  Be able to do SOMETHING for yourself.....show some independence...My mother ALWAYS taught me that the key to independence is not necessarily doing it all for yourself, it is having the ABILITY to do it for yourself if need be. Let that man be a man, but baby if he acts a fool you better be able to hit the ground running....

Case in point...how in the HELL do you blow $15 million dollars in 4 years?  :brickwall:

Eddie Murphy's ex-wife broke (http://blogs.bet.com/entertainment/spotlight/2010/12/29/eddie-murphys-ex-owes-big-money/)

But............just for you, GAL.

Is there an acceptable length above the knee, if at all,  for a 40+ woman to wear her dress?  I've seen some gals walking about who obviously are oblivious to BOTH their age and girth.  :o

I knew IT!  That is  a good one...

It helps if you have legs like Tina Turner's or Angela Bassett's.

Or a similar shape to Natalie Cole pre-kidney failure.

I figure that sometimes people refuse to be honest about what is in the mirror.

Sometimes, the determination to wear an outfit or a piece of clothing wins out over whether it fits properly or is flattering.

This is exactly why you shouldn't be shopping in the juniors section. I guess my mom just hammered it in my head but after a certain age, super short skirts just look silly even in your legs look like Tina's. I mean, she wears that stuff to perform, that's not real life clothing.

Clothing should be appropriate in fit. Fit will always outlast style trends.

And yes, I am a lady though my screen name doesn't denote my gender lol

Now, another question for GAL, Bearforlife, and the other ladies here:

Is the "acceptability" of the amount of cleavage exposed in public ALSO related to age?  In other words, generally, should the amount of cleavage that is exposed be diminished as the lady gets older?

What is "titillating" on a 25 year old might be "stomach turning" on a 45 year old.  ;D

Everyone fashion taste is different. Some people have it some don't. Yeah, I might shake my head at a 40 something female or male who has on something, I wouldn't dare wear or have one of my friends wear. But hey, they do what they do and I do what I do.
I wear a 36D bra and my girls look very nice in whatever I wear. If I decide to wear a skirt up to my a--, hey that's me, because I know I workout and my legs look good. ;) I can truly say I have never committed a fashion faux pas, because I'm a scholar whose personal style as one of my raters noted" Is worthy of commendation" ;)

Hate to generalize too much but I think the art and style of dressing is missing from the younger generation. There is a time and place on what too wear. Too many have all of the Jordan brand but don't have a suit for a funeral. For the young ladies hoochie club wear has no place in the business enviorment.

Uh, you THINK the art and style of dressing is missing from their generation?

Hell, their generation, and probably their parents, too.  :brickwall:

Leave behind irresponsibility and relationship games.

Agree! But the problem is a lot of parents don't know how to dress  for the occasion so how can they teach their children?

Throw in those  parents who want to be "in" or follow fashion trends--and you have a breakdown of people dressing appropriately.

When I was growing up, we had "travel clothes" clothes for church, casual and clothes for "special times."

I don't think people think or dress that way these days.

Thumper and I frequently go to the Kennedy Center, and other theater venues, so she's learned to dress for those events.

But many times she's  whispered  to me that she sees a lot of people "who just aren't dressed right for this."

I have no problem with ladies with nice legs showing them of, but the problems is some folks don't realize their legs are not that cute. At the knee is fine but to keep going up and being 50+ wearing this (http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:xWTWZZ_x_ZpwaM:http://obsessee.typepad.com/.a/6a01053694df79970b0105369a36bf970b-800wi&t=1)

when your legs look like this  (http://images.medicinenet.com/images/SlideShow/spider_varicose_veins_s3_varicose_veins.jpg) or this  (http://images.medicinenet.com/images/SlideShow/spider_varicose_veins_s6_spider_varicose_veins.jpg) should be a felony.

Ok. I understand. NOW when legs looks like that... I say either get them fixed or cover them.

I agree that there is a lack of people knowing what is appropriate for what occasion or venue. I went to a NYE "gala" in Arlington, VA last week and some of the stuff I saw would have knocked you out!

Hats of any type not worn properly!  Women.  Leggings are not pants!

Well, I have both (Jordan Sneakers and a Black Suit, plus about 8 or 9 others)..

To me, especially if it is functional, nothing wrong with Jordans. I like Jordans/Nikes to play ball in, they are the most comfortable to hoop in, (especially as you hit 40 and beyond ) As you get older, you need some comfortable kicks to play sports in/exercise in, so if they are Jordan's, then so be it. What am I supposed to do, switch to Converse??

But yeah, a grown-butt man of 40 should have at least a couple of suits for occasions that call for them.

........good points, GAL.  And I applaud you for passing on appropriate values to Thumper.  Sadly, however, the culture and evolving standards are changing.

Mrs. Strike, Ms. Strike and I went out to dinner New Year's Eve night.  The weather wasn't terribly cold - somewhere in upper 40's/low 50's - so I initially decided to wear a medium-heavy jacket.  Both Mrs. Strike and Ms. Strike wore dresses.  Right before walking out the door, I decided to shed the jacket and wear a wool sports coat instead. This was a high-end steak restaurant - well, "high-end" by Nashville standards  - so I'm thinking a "gentleman" should wear a sports coat to dinner.

Well, the place was crowded, and I could literally count the number of guys in the place wearing either a suit or sports coat.  Most were just nicely dressed with slacks and shirt.  But there were quite a few in jeans - ladies too - and even some of our young male "cousins" with sagging jeans, baseball cap, and the rest of the "street" regalia.  :o

And that scene at that restaurant on that night is just one example of what I've observed over the years.

But word to GAL: Mrs. Strike ALWAYS taught Ms. Strike how to dress appropriately since she was a young girl.  She's now 21 and a college junior.  We don't know how she dresses in school when she's away from us.  But she ALWAYS knows how to dress when she's home with us and we're going out.

Trust me, the same will go for Thumper as she matures through the years.

I hope you're right Strike 79. :)

So far, it is fairly easy to get her to dress properly because Thumper loves, loves clothes and accesories and looking good.

She is much better than I was at her age.

But, I am not sure if it is the gene pool or if it because she's been wearing a school uniform for awhile.
