Title: Disrepecting, name calling & insulting Titles of Threads by O-dan Posters
Post by: Twin Que ASU on October 07, 2009, 04:32:42 PM
Enough is enough.

Twin Que ASU and Bison66 have joined together – across the aisle, so to speak - to ask all Posters on Onnidan Politics Forum to ignore any and all threads where the TITLE of the thread disrespects the President of the United States by calling him out of his name, or using nicknames for him.

We have NO interest in stifling discussion by anyone or about anyone.  However, current disrespectful behavior has discouraged several people from participating and we are all the worse for not having their input and insights.

We feel that - given the already polarized atmosphere in the country and on this board – IGNORING THREAD TITLES INCLUDING DISRESPECT will foster more productive and less antagonistic debate and discussion.  Of course, this effort has no direct impact on any particular poster’s choice to name-call or disrespect anyone in THEIR OWN POSTS within a thread.  That is within the responsibility of the Forum Moderators to monitor and act.  We simply ask that Posters raise the level of debate.

We, as participating Posters/Members of the Forum, have the right, the choice, and the ability to decide in which threads we will participate.  This does not infringe on anyone’s speech, but it may encourage a healthier climate for discussion.

In the same spirit, we ask ALL Posters to refrain from using insulting or demeaning terms for fellow Posters in THREAD TITLES.  Like retorts of disrespect and name calling serves no purpose and fuels the joust of ignorance.  Please try to remember we are a group of college trained people who should be above and beyond name calling and petty insults

If there is a topic worthy of discussion, but which starts with a disrespectful TITLE, any Poster may start a substitute thread to discuss that issue or concern, while we continue to IGNORE THE DISRESECTFUL ONE.  Posters, let us all agree to resist temptation.  If more than one person begins a substitute thread, we suggest that the originator of the latter thread delete it - if s/he chooses to do so.

Twin Que ASU previously made a sustained and valiant effort to encourage one poster to stop such disrespectful references to our President and that poster said he would.  However, that poster’s commitment was soon broken.  Bison66 sincerely apologizes for any of his past thread titles that were disrespectful to anyone – but, at the same time, he does not believe in ‘unilateral disarmament’ re: name-calling.

It is our hope that – especially given the abuse and disrespect that Black people suffered throughout society, which included others refusing to address us as Mr., Mrs. or another title we had earned, even in the courts – civility and respect will be given more breathing space on this Forum.

We seek YOUR consideration and cooperation and we call on everyone to support this simple, non-intrusive, and constructive effort to elevate our discussion to a level more suitable to grown, mostly college-educated people.

Signed:
Twin Que ASU & Bison66

We ask for co-signers from all camps to join us with this effort :)

Just as a point of clarity, we specifically made this case for the Office of the President --- not a named person.  Not sure what comments were made before but I am one to say I think that disrespecting the office is wrong..PERIOD.  I (speaking for me only) think that disrespectful dialogue amongst one another is pointless, disrepectful and unnecessary in intelligent dialogue.

highlander,

Since you are just asking, I will just be answering.

First off, as Twin said, neither of us was here on Onnidan at that time.  [EDIT: Re-reading I am not sure Twin was saying he was not here - he just said that he wasn't sure what was said.]

However, there is another factor and I don't know if you can relate, which we mentioned and which is important to many.  If you'd like to explore it further, then you can begin another thread- maybe in the General Discussion forum - about why Black folks are so "sensitive" about such things:

I bolded that part to emphasize that Black folks had to GO TO COURT to require attorneys questioning us IN COURT as witnesses (or referring to us as complainants or defendants) to refer to us with simple decency and human respect.  If I recall correctly, the argument was that the obvious and apparent lack of respect was prejudicial to the consideration of the testimony of Black witnesses.

Does that help?

Finally, as far as I know there was nothing stopping you or anyone else from proposing during Bush's presidency what Twin and I have proposed now.  But if you had, someone might well have asked you how come it wasn't done, on this board or another, when Clinton was in office.  Would you have a response for that?

I try not to speak against presidents period.  I for one wanted Bush to be successful.  But we cannot ignore the financial strain that was put on families during his time in office.  Even that, I tried to be respectful.  Most anger towards Bush were because of some things he did.  Most anger towards Obama are......hum, you tell me.  He hasn't been in office long enough to really judge.  The President seems to be doing a lot of damage control.  President Obama is also talking about somthing that's very important, and that is health care.  I have horror stories in my church about people that can pay for health care, but they can't get it.

Oh, and yes, sign me up.

This really doesn't make sense to me.  Whatever he does is going to make folk angry regardless.  The man is being hated because of what?  The party he is in?  The school he attended?  What? Some folk are fighting against his health care plan and they have no idea as to what it says.

Bison....I can appreciate your answer but if I would have made the same request for Bush there would have been plenty of posters who would have said he didn't deserve respect in spite of being president. There would have been a clear distinction made between the office and the man. There is a very evident bias on this board in favor of Obama and rightly so.....it is as it should be but don't expect everyone to buy into this kumbuya moment. I respect the office of the president but that doesn't mean I have give Obama a pass on everything........in my opinion he hasn't done one thing on his own valition that has been positive for this country....not one. highlander,

Let's stay focused on this thread, rather than shifting away to a discussion of what the President has or has not done.

Thanks for appreciating my answer.

However, one aspect you did not address is what your response would have been - had you launched a similar effort during the Bush years - to those who might have asked why you (or someone) had not done the same thing when Clinton was being accused of murder, etc, and being called out of his name.

I gave you a very particular and, to me, important, reason for the difference in the current circumstances and, frankly, I do not think there is a parallel.  Perhaps you can show me where I am wrong.

UCH stop beating around the Bush.  You are implying that the posters here are bias, hypocritical, maybe even racist your favorite word, toward Pres. Bush but we want ya'll to give Pres. Obama a pass because he's black.  Is that what you are saying?  Are you biased toward President Obama?  Your answer alone indicates as much because you have already made a conclusion about the man before he has really had time to do anything.  I could certainly say the same thing about Pres. Bush and he was in office for eight years.  I am certain now that you are one of the folks hoping he fails and thus the nation will fail.  I guess you are unpatriotic because that's what you would have said about me had I said what you said about Pres. Bush.  By the way if you have so much respect for the Presidency why are you not showing respect to the POTUS.  I have yet to see you write Pres. Obama anywhere. ::)

Q82 -- et al,
I agree with what you wrote and how you wrote it!!!
All, I want it made perfectly clear that I AM NOT HAPPY WITH MUCH OF WHAT HAS COME FROM THE OVAL OFFICE; on the other hand, I am not nor will I disrespect the POTUS with the terms and phrases used by some on this forum.  That is my position from start to end.  Unlike some, I do not hope he fails!!!  I do hope some of the things he does change for the good of this country and all concerned.  Much of the rhetoric spewed is inaccurate and incorrect.  Much is also true!!!  I think the President is entitled to let his agenda function before criticism.  If it fails, then let the respectful criticism begin.....  I am not asking for a pass for him because some of his ancestors look like mine!!!

It is our hope that – especially given the abuse and disrespect that Black people suffered throughout society, which included others refusing to address us as Mr., Mrs. or another title we had earned, even in the courts – civility and respect will be given more breathing space on this Forum.

 O0
Bison....I can appreciate your answer but if I would have made the same request for Bush there would have been plenty of posters who would have said he didn't deserve respect in spite of being president. There would have been a clear distinction made between the office and the man. There is a very evident bias on this board in favor of Obama and rightly so.....it is as it should be but don't expect everyone to buy into this kumbuya moment. I respest the office of the president but that doesn't mean I have give Obama a pass on everything........in my opinion he hasn't done one thing on his own valition that has been positive for this country....not one. GO VIKINGS!!!

I have always called him Obama or president.....would you prefer " o holy one" ? Please note that I referred to Bush in the same manner. Now who brought the word race into this discussion? It wasn't me but for some reason you keep accusing me of bringing it up? Why is that? I hope his POLOCIES fail....when will you understand that? By the way...I'm sure you were saying very polite things aout Bush when he was in office weren't you?

As far as making the suggestion on behalf of other presidents....my answer probably would have echoed what you basically said....go ahead...no ones stopping you. My question still stands though....if everyone respects the office so much how come this wasn't proposed for Bush? GO VIKINGS!!!

highlander,

When I answered that VERY SAME question earlier, I wondered out loud if you could relate.

It is obvious that either you couldn't/don't OR you didn't read/understand my answer to you.

You want to read it again?  If not, no problem.

But don't even try pretending that your question was not answered in, shall I say, Spades.

THANK-YOU THANK-YOU THANK-YOU !

I also was one of those that gave up on this forum. I got discouraged because you really could not discuss or debate any issues - everything was turning into name-calling and smacking session.

If there's going to be civil atmosphere in this political forum, then count me also. I, for one, like hearing what others think and understanding how they process information to come to conclusions.

Maybe people need a "SMACK forum" to get it out their system. You don't want that stuff backing up in there.

highlander,

Since you are just asking, I will just be answering.

First off, as Twin said, neither of us was here on Onnidan at that time.  [EDIT: Re-reading I am not sure Twin was saying he was not here - he just said that he wasn't sure what was said.]

No UCH, you don't have to call him "O holy one" that title was taken by the president he replaced.  You are correct you have consistently shown disrespect to those who have held and hold the office of president.  However, there are posts where you have used titles with some elected officials.  Is it that hard for you to put those two words (President & Obama) together or is that your passive aggressive way to show disrespect.

I brought up race because you were beating around the bush inferring things about liberal posters and you have used it in numerous posts.  I have mentioned it on several occasions, but if you now have selective amnesia I can go back and cite them.  The comments you make lead me to feel that your disdain for Pres. Obama is deeper than any policy issue, though you may legitimately think that it is.

If you can find a post where I disrespected Pres. Bush I will stop posting in the political forum.  Unlike Oldsport I will keep my word.  I am a soldier and I respect the office and show the person in the office respect even if I don't personally respect the person in it. Now are you willing to take that same challenge, that if you said something disrespectful about Pres. Obama you would stop posting?

UCH when someone is as bias in their thoughts as you are I have a hard time giving credence to what they say.  Maybe if some of your comments were more open minded people would be able to see your point of view.  However, you are so partisan, IMO, that most of your posts seem irrational and lacking of thought.  IMO they are mostly opinionated ramblings and don't seem based on fact.

I also feel you constantly imply that posters on this board are unsophisticated because they don't agree with your position, which by the way you don't express too well.  Please don't think because we attended an HBCU that we are incapable of rational thinking and debating you on any topic.

You keep asking why this request was not made during Pres. Bush's time in office.  The answer is simple, you didn't make it.  It is however, being made now and what I gather from you comment is that you refuse to be respectful to the President and therefore you used republican play number two, the the smokescreen  "Bring up what they didn't do for Pres. Bush.

Note: Play number one is the distraction technique.  Bring up something to change the subject, i.e.  Rev Wright, birth certificate, racism, etc.

If necessary when answering a question, it may be good idea to highlight your answer or do something to make it clear to readers.

I haven't been on the site for a second, and I am COMPLETELY aboard.  I completely agree with Twin and Bison...While I believe that we should all be entitled to our opinions, political and personal...and that we should all have the right to freedom of speech...and the right to disagree and debate..fter the "Bastard" post, I understand that lines can and are crossed-and to attack one anothers person whenwe do not agree is outlandish.  It deters healthy discussion and those who really want to stick with the issues from posting. As a political forum we should keep on the topic and not on our opinions of the personal lives of or such blatant disrespect to the person of our political figures.
I applaud you guys for taking a stand.

1.  You may not go into longwinded speeches but maybe you need to .  Your short ones though succint do not always come across as clear.

2. You may be using your statement as a passive aggression way to tell me that I think the more I say the smarter I sound.  Hell I am smart, haven't you figured that out by now.  ;D That's why I don't buy into you BS. If that is what you meant at least have balls enough to say so.  Was that too long for you?

3.  Of course you think what you say is logical because that's your position.  A crazy man thinks he's sane.

Ladies & Gentlemen:

For a few short days, we agreed and kept our word as men and women not to refer in title threads, at least, to the President by disrespectful names and to ignore threads which did so.

Despite, one particular poster jumping on board in agreement right away, that poster has now reneged and gone back on its word - AGAIN.

I find this juvenile, reprehensible and an indication of a flawed moral character.  But that is just my opinion.

However, most of the rest of us agreed to IGNORE such threads.  Please check this thread's original post re: this point.

Consequently, I encourage each poster to remember and abide by our agreement.

Comments.

I have not put ANY political postings on this Board for a very long time just because of the tone. Count me in.

And uchighlander, about this not working the same for Pres.Bush, how do you know it would not have worked to ask for the same thing, since, as far as I know, it was never tried?
You and I may agree on very little where we stand politically, but I have never called any other poster on Onnidan any names at all and never will and I don't believe/don't know of you doing that either.

Okay Twin. I'll sign on.

Sorry, Twin. You're not my enemy, but I don't think you can negotiate for them either. I have no respect for my enemies.

This is unsurprisingly revealing for a couple of reasons.

First, OS refers to "negotiations."  This is SO out of touch with reality.
FACTS:  An appeal was made to all posters to refrain from using disrespectful names for the President and everyone who responded agreed, including OS.  Everyone gave their word as a man or a woman.  In OS's case, for the second time.  There were no negotiations:  a request and OS agreed to it.  If there is some other "negotiation" going on, I am not aware of it and much more importantly they have nothing to do with OS giving and then breaking his word.

Second, in one of his most bizarre postings yet - and THAT is saying something - OS refers to his "ENEMIES"!!!!  This dude is delusional.

Third, when for the second time, OS broke his word, Twin Que reminded him of it.  OS replied, "I changed my mind."  How weak can you get?  A man/woman whose word is not good has NO honor, what - so - ever!!

I barely go into this side of the board anyway...Especially since my parents' parenting skills erroneously came into question about a man who has never been to jail, has two degrees, volunteers in the community and is an upstanding citizen/homeowner who has been gainfully employed all of his adult life (yeah, I am talking about myself, not patting myself on the back, but I find my folks parenting skills not lacking to have a son who has basically done what he SHOULD be doing, but I digress)..This seemed to happen just because of the recent nomination of the current president of the United States.

The fact that it would cause someone to come out of his mug like that, it was time for me to bounce before I totally disrespect and just straight curse this person out and get banned from the board.

Instead of doing that, I took the high road and rolled out...(and no this person was not OS)

But I do definitely agree with what was/is being proposed. But as I have already seen, it will not be followed until a man of a different color/ideology is elected POTUS....

YOU HAVE A LEGITIMATE POINT, HOWEVER YOU MUST ALSO CONSIDER THIS.  THERE IS A DISTINCT DIFFERENCE IN NAME CALLING AS HARMLESS "JONING" AS OPPOSED TO NAME CALLING WITH THE SOLE INTENT TO DISRESPECT OTHERS SIMPLY BECAUSE YOU DISAGREE WITH THEIR POLITICAL BELIEFS.  I BELIEVE WE ALL ARE CAPABLE OF DISTINGUISHING BETWEEN THE TWO.  THERE ARE MANY ON ONNIDAN WITH WHOM I VILOLENTLY DISAGREE WITH THEIR POLITICS AND YET CAN STILL ENGAGE IN A MEANINGFUL AND RESPECTFUL DEBATE WITHOUT RESORTING TO NAME CALLING.  THERE ARE YET OTHERS WITH WHOM I BOTH DISAGREE WITH POLITICALLY AND HAVE NO RESPECT FOR BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO SENSE OF HONOR, OR INTEGRITY AND CAN BE COUNTED ON TO RENEGE ON THEIR WORD AS OFTEN AS MOST PEOPLE CHANGE THEIR UNDERWEAR.  THESE TYPES OF INDIVIDUALS WILL NEVER HAVE MY RESPECT.  I EVEN WONDER HOW THEY INTERACT WITH THE FAMILY, PEERS AND CO-WORKERS.  I WONDER IF THEY DO THESE THINGS TO SIMPLY GET A RISE OUT OF OTHERS OR ARE THEY REALLY  THAT MENTALLY UNSTABLE.  THERE ARE OTHERS WHO DENEGRATE THEMSELVES IN THIS, A VERY OPEN AND PUBLIC FORUM SO IT COMES AS NO SURPRISE THAT THEY IMMEDIATELY RESORT TO NAME CALLING.  THEY HAVE NO PERSONAL RESPECT SO WHY SHOULD WE EXPECT THEM TO RESPECT OTHERS.  THERE ARE OTHERS WHO ARE APPARENTLY INCAPABLE OR UNWILLING TO ENGAGE IN A DEBATE IN THEIR OWN WORDS YET WHO POST THE WORDS AND THOUGHTS OF OTHERS, DISPLAYING A CAPABILITY TO QUOTE OTHERS BUT APPARENTLY NO CAPABILITY OF EXPRESSION OF ORIGINAL THOUGHT.   I USUALLY DO NOT GO OUT OF MY WAY TO PERSONALLY INSULT OTHERS.   I HAVE HOWEVER ON OCCASION BEEN GUILTY OF THIS FAILING, BEEN CALLED OUT ON IT AND AFTER RECOGNIZING MY FAULT APPOLOGIZED TO THE INDIVIDUAL I HAVE INSULTED.   HOWEVER, I WILL AND CAN BE COUNTED ON TO RESPOND IMMEDIATELY AND IN KIND TO A PERSONAL INSULT.

A friendly reminder to all who co-signed.

From the Original Post (OP):
Quote

A civil and respectful discourse......"interesting concept".  ;)

Seems like civility and respect is a foreign concept to a lot of folks around here. The final straw for me was being called a "sambo" today. If we don't have the intelligence to engage each other in debate without resorting to name calling then offenders should start getting banned.

We ask for co-signers from all camps to join us with this effort

I know my thoughts may be Utopian and unrealistic but wow I never imagined many would accelerate their disrespectful tone(s) with such ferocity of late.
I visit this site everyday looking for a stimulating/thought provoking subject I can join in on and share my 'warped' thoughts but I find it more difficult each day.
Why does almost every thread resort to name calling and insults?  Can't we all just agree to disagree without being disagreeable?  I know most of you are middle to upper middle class folk.  Why act otherwise....
This particular forum really proves that education is no real escape from ignorance.......

I am still hoping and wishing........

It appears that two posters are under the impression that a decision to refrain from posting in a thread with a disrespectful title somehow reflects an inability to respond.

Of course, this is not surprising since one of them in particular has exhibited this kind of "projection" for a long time:  He figures that since he runs away from threads when he has no answer that others - despite the abundant evidence to the contrary - do the same.

HL,

Really I thought the reason would be obvious, but since you didn't understand.......

In this thread or elsewhere (I'm not going to take the time to look), several people announced that they would NOT post in threads with the kind of titles referenced in this thread.

I mentioned above that despite that, there were two posters (were you one of them?) who were carrying on in a thread about how others had nothing to say and took that as evidence that the two of them had scored a point.

Good luck in trying to establish civility on this forum. There are countless examples of the subject matter under discussion on any website be it your local newspaper or even USA Today. Frankly it( disrespecting, name calling & insulting titles) is rather entertaining. I believe computer users around the world access American websites and see just how savage Americans can be. It is  the key stroke equivalent of gouging each other's eyes out. Those who persist in this behavior are going to have a cornary at  the keyboards. Bound to happen, you read it here first.

Has there been a lot of name-calling on this board since OS stopped posting?

THAT'S why my answer is: "Don't start none; won't be none."

I asked you if you noticed a lot of name-calling since OS stopped posting.

Since you disappeared along with him for almost a month and have only posted a few times since then in POLITICS, you'll have to demonstrate to me that you've been called a lot of names from December 3 (your first post-election post in POLITICS).

Wanna give it a shot - to back up your claim?

This is easy. Funkmaster, CIAA FAN, CU1994 have all called me names on many different dates since December 3rd.. Any post by Cholly on any board always has a name or an insult in it. Sometimes I think name calling and insults are so ingrained with some liberals on this board they don't even know when they do it. GO VIKINGS!!!

Hold on Tuff-Guy (oh , no, there I go calling names..... ::)) The worst I have said to you as far as name calling in the last month or so is breaking your screen name apart and filling it in with something like UCHImeister or UCHI-WALLY....If you are gonna be that sensitive, then you need to take your butt on somewhere else and complain about your loser-butt political friends and try to help them get their crap together...

Again I may be wrong but I don't think I have. If you go back and check the thread, the Republican Party should be banned, I made some remarks about the Speaker of the House and the Republicans in the house and if I remember correctly, Y and Uchi said some nasty things about me.  :'( I'm posting from my phone right now but when I have a chance, I will check that thread.
