Title: The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference
Post by: JBROB on June 30, 2021, 02:19:46 PM
In 1969, a group, whose members were long associated with interscholastic athletics, met in Durham, North Carolina with the purpose of discussing the organization of a new conference. After the formulation of a committee, and their research reported, seven institutions:

Delaware State University
Howard University
University of Maryland Eastern Shore
Morgan State University
North Carolina A&T State University
North Carolina Central University
South Carolina State College

agreed to become the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

The conference's main goals were to establish and supervise an intercollegiate athletic program among a group of educational institutions that shared the same academic standards and philosophy of co-curricular activities and seek status as a Division I conference for all of its sports.

The conference was confirmed in 1970, and had its first season of competition in football in 1971.

It just the last day of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University's membership in the MEAC.

I thought it deserved some acknowledgement.

And also the last day for FAMU and BCU MEAC Membership as well. I wished I could attend FAMU's SWAC Membership Pep Rally tomorrow on campus. I wonder is BCU is having a SWAC Membership Pep Rally on campus as well?

The MEAC and the Big South are in the same position.  The need football playing members.  The MEAC has 6 members and the Big South has 7 members.

Neither NEED anything.

MEAC doesn't need a minimum because their champ goes to the CB. To qualify for the FCS playoffs a conference needs 6 members , Big South has that.

Both conferences want more members for scheduling purposes.

The only issue that can stand in the way of the MEAC at this time is itself. Honestly, the reduced travel expenses and the ability to schedule more out of conference games in revenue sports is a huge plus. But the big thing now is the shares of the Celebration Bowl to the FB playing members should almost doubled compared the time period prior to Hampton leaving the conference.

Just hold down the fort and build the a competitive brand and encourage each member institution to reinvest in athletics and the MEAC will be in a great place.

Maybe the MEAC and the Big South should merge and rename the conference, such as the Big MEAC.

You think those PWCs in the Big South would want to forego the playoffs in order to participate in the CB, if one should just so happen to win the BS?

The MEAC and SWAC should've merged in 1978, to be completely honest.

A merger between the conferences should come back to the table.

eagle pride, it means exactly that...what school would be willing to join the MEAC?  Someone may very well find the MEAC attractive---BUT WHO?  To outsiders looking in, a conference that recently lost 5 members probably isn't something folks want to jump in to with both feet. Thats just facts, no diss to the MEAC. I want to see the conference rise up and do well.  But you also have to be realistic.  NONE of the Div 2 hbcu's will be making that move - its too costly. Remember, you gotta sustain yourself at that level.  Savannah State tried it for years, finally was admitted and now they are back in the SIAC/Div 2...and thats not a bad place to be.

So who does that leave? What schools do you think would be a good it WHO WOULD ALSO BE INTERESTED? See, it is a 2-fold question.

Wanting the finest chick in the room is cool; even better when she wants you too.  IJS.  ;)

A few years ago, I would not have dreamed of Hampton and A&T being members of the BS.  But it happened.  Let's make it through this season and see what happens.  I heard a couple of schools were interested, but we will see.   I don't think you can blame the MEAC for most of those schools leaving as they did.  FAMU has been unstable for a while, and BCU will follow them wherever they go. A&T was upset because the MEAC didn't do anything about the Florida schools that made travel expensive.  Not sure why Hampton left.

I think it is great that we have two HBCU conferences and we should do all we can to maintain them.

Significantly reduce or waive the application fee of joining the conference would help.

The MEAC would waive its entrance fee, according to the reports about KSU and VSU as potential members.   Not much can be done about the 1.7 million NCAA entrance fee though.

Wile, it doesn't hurt to petition the NCAA for relief of the waiver fee. I would think that in this climate that the NCAA isn't beyond negotiating. Why would they take a hard stance against it?

Honestly, I would not have really imagined any of those schools leaving the MEAC either UNLESS they were going to the FBS level which would require them to.

For whatever reason those schools left, THEY'RE GONE.

Remember being on the outside looking in is different than being on the inside looking out. Meaning that FAMU and BCU had come to their decision to do what was best for their budget at their Universities.
