Either way, I fully expect there to be litigation in the very near future. This could get ugly.

Don't worry. Some PWI will scoop him up, and pay very well for his services.

I got a feeling St. Aug. trying to save money, but they could go about it much differently.

This guy was St. Aug. Its not like they had anything better. Maybe it was his age.

I certainly hope not. That would be an easy ageism lawsuit.

I heard someone mention after the accident coupled with the length of time for his recovery to assume duties as AD on that small campus was over the top.  Pup is probably 75+ and time to move on down the road. NOT.   It is a sad ending for a great coach.  When it is time to go, leave and not wait to be chased away spoiling your numerous and hard to surpass records.  Building with his name emblazoned is on that campus already.    Hey pup,  ease on down the road with dignity.

The Greensboro News and Record has never written an article on St Augustine University, rarely an article on the CIAA. But today they publish a 4 column half page article on the firing of Coach Williams.

The story made WFDD, the NPR station in Winston Salem.

A failure by the university PR team to control the narrative.

From Facebook:

While SAU's track program continues to perform at a championship level, other areas of SAU's athletic programs need significant development and focus.

SAU administration determined that a more robust athletic program with an expanded capacity across multiple sports categories and attracting more regional and national events to our campus needs to be cultivated under new leadership initiatives.

The university has been in negotiations with Coach Williams since March 2020. He was offered the opportunity to continue his service at St. Augustine's as Head Coach of the SAU Falcons track team and to

be honored with the lifetime appointment as Athletic Director Emeritus with a continuity of consulting with the athletics program. He declined the offer. We sincerely appreciate his service and wish him all the best as he moves forward.

Over 46 years at one place I would say St Augustine has been very loyal. They just simply want to go a new direction. Saving money is a good enough reason. They probably asked him to retire and he felt he had the right to leave when he wants. He should have just planned a good exit party. You can't think you're bigger than the business. It just doesn't work that way. He is tarnishing his reputation. Sometimes you should move along gracefully. You can still be a volunteer and help the new person out. The press doesn't really care. You know how they feel about HBCU's. Build us down. Build them(YNW) up.

And the firing of the old football coach probably led to a mutiny in his athletic department.

I have known Coach Williams since August 1973 when I entered St Aug as a know nothing, bright eyed, country boy freshman.  I think at the time he was working in admissions.  As a naive freshman, I saw him everyday hanging out with the Nupes and I thought he was a student.  When I got to St Aug we did not even have a track team.  I and many others who participated in track and field while in high school and just wanted to continue came together and formed a ragtag track team.  Coach Charles Harvin (God rest his soul) became our coach mainly because nobody else wanted the job.  He coached until 1975 and the same happened.  Nobody wanted the position and Coach Williams reluctantly took the head track and field coach position.  He was raw and had very little if any experience.  Stories have surfaced of him going over to NCCU and meeting with Coach Leroy Walker to get coaching advice.  Fast forward 45 years and his records and accomplishments speak for themselves.  As much as I like and admire Pup and his achievements I understand that the university comes first and no one is bigger than the institution.  I just have a problem with the word "fired".  The word fired should never be associated with his name. I just wish the school could have found a better way to resolve things. The man deserves a retirement ceremony with all the bells and whistles. Just imagine a farewell fundraiser and the money it may have generated.  Let's say a black tie event with a $100 per plate dinner with a live band and Coach Williams delivering a final drop the mic speech. It's going to take me some time to get over this but eventually I will support the final decision and continue to support my beloved St Aug.
