Title: Trump ponders opening historically black college in Michigan
Post by: G-Ram on May 22, 2020, 09:06:05 PM
Trump ponders opening historically black college in Michigan.

In a meeting with Black Michigan leaders on Thursday, President Donald Trump spoke about possibilities of what would bring more value to Michigan, specifically Detroit. One idea brainstormed between the president and a legislator has ignited a rousing conversation on social media.

The controversy surrounds Michigan Rep. Karen Whitsett, D-Detroit, and her interest in bringing a new historically black college to her city. In footage captured from the meeting, Whitsett touts her idea of bringing a historically black college to the Motor City.

“I would love to see a historically black college in the city of Detroit, and I think you’re just the president to do it,” Whitsett told Trump during the meeting.

Trump responded quickly, expressing optimism about the plan.

“It’s an interesting idea,” Trump said. “They’ve got a lot of money now. They’re all set. Maybe we can work something out. We’ll talk about that.”
He adds that bringing “one, real good one,” is a “great” idea. Trump turned to John James, a Republican candidate for a Michigan Senate seat, and suggested he “start working on that.”
Why did the discussion get backlash?

Most of the chatter around the seemingly harmless conversation has pointed to the lack of historically context around it. Namely, a “historic” black college, in the federal definition, cannot be newly introduced.
The U.S. Department of Education and the Higher Education Act of 1965 considers historically black colleges as institutions of higher learning established before the Civil Rights Act of 1964, whose principal mission was, and still remains, to educate black students. Therefore, a new college could not be designated as a historically black college.
There are 107 colleges deemed as HBCUs, according to the Department of Education. Detroit was once home to an HBCU, Lewis Business College, which also is known as Lewis College of Business. Lewis was established in 1928 and closed its doors in 2013.

The concept of the new HBCU brought much mockery on Twitter on Friday.

Wayne State University is located right in the heart of Detroit and has a sizable black enrollment, but it has never been predomenty back.

Shaw College at Detroit was predominantly black. It closed in 1983. I doubt very seriously if a new one can be established there.

As I heard, "how can you start a new "historical" anything?

Don't forget to ask Whitsett to clarify her comment as well. Is she meaning she wants to move an existing HBCU to Detroit?

He considered—— he’ll think about it until he leaves that meeting. Then it’s forgotten.

You can’t create a historical black college in 2020, because....well-that whole historic, post-slavery context is missing. Signed- an HBCU alum.
This idiot.

Here is the method to the madness.  Trump knows he will get a very small portion of the Black vote, so he is trying to get maybe 10% of it to have an impact in November.

It is not only for the rust belt states.  Look at Texas and Georgia.  Beto almost defeated incumbent Ted Cruz, and democrats made gains locally and in Texas' Congressional delegation in 2018.  In Georgia Stacey Abrams was not the only candidate affected by what happened at the polls.  Other statewide races, which were close, were affected too.  The bad news is the with the changing demographics (with Texas being less than 50% White), the GOP has to work in states that they thought were a given for them.

So the administration is throwing a bone to Black voters to show that it cares.  (Some will fall for it.)  The move is laughable and clumsy at best as some have already stated here.  Here is what is in the article that someone in the White House should read:

^^^This.  Corona/economy is putting a hurt on his  re-election chances so he is trying to garner some votes.  However most whites probably don't want another HBCU.  They have no use for the current ones.
