Title: LSU Golden Tiger Marching Band Playing "Neck"
Post by: The Sloping Hills and Verdent Green on January 15, 2020, 07:39:53 AM
The LSU fans took "Neck" to dark side again Monday night.  I thought the LSU administration had band them from playing and singing Neck this way.  Leave it to white folks to f*ck things up.  It is going to be interesting to see in 2022 when Southern goes to LSU for football how the 2 separate groups of fans sing this song.

Screw that song. Just make sure that the score is not 100 to 0 by half time. Just saying.

Based on what I saw against Clemson, it just might be that bad at the half. Nothing against Southern, but LSU is that good. Those Tigers hit hard... real hard.

Y'all can say what ya want, but when you're in Tiger Stadium and the GBFTL plays "Neck", with over 100K fans joining in, it is a sight to behold.

And honestly, at home games it's generally only the student section that is chanting STTDB.

Not to give them any credit, but if one knew the political history of the song Talking Out The Side of Your Neck, LSU in general might have played a part in why that song was created.  In the late 70's, there was a political controversy when Reagan spoke at LSU's campus and SU's band was made to perform.  The controversy almost derailed Reagan's campaign.  A former SU Jukebox member co-author the song for Cameo. I'm sure none of the LSU students know the political history of the song.

I was just having this type discussion after the picture of Drew Brees popped up cozing up to Trump. They bent over backwards to justify why they were worshipping him as if he had won ten super bowls for us. This is how the conversation went.

Me:They loved dem some Drew though

Poster: I will leave 45 alone right now he was just watching the game like all of us do I disagree with his presidency hell yeah I want let hate Consume like it has with him I love football to much

Me: sounds like you're doing some personal confession. I'm not a priest brother

Poster: Hey you know me 45 is still a jackI won't let that Jack change my perception of Drew

Me:  my perception of Drew hasn't change. I've never seen him for anymore than what he is. Another white guy that's all down with you until he has to choose between you and his privilege.

Poster:  I'm a point something out to ya you agree with me or not I don't know Drew personally I could care less about his white privilege hell his check book get him in doors more then his privilege 45 shrew white folk an black folk over so it don't matter again let's stick to football an that's that

Poster: Autry Lex Alexis  again I'm gonna stick to football man we have ways to go as a race but hey we make it happen eventually that White privilege foolery will fall to the ground my black people kicking down doors an stating there claim

Me:  If you wanted to stick to football you wouldn't have responded to my post in the manner that you did. What you were looking for was confirmation of your position. Stop putting yourself in a position to lie to yourself and worst to God. I pray for the day that God free my race from the spell these demons have on so many of us. Fawk Drew Brees and all that he represent. I praise and give honor to no one but God.

No one is saying we “ Invented”. What I ‘m saying, not speaking for others, is when we have played or done something for so long, then the clear ones come along and do the same thing, people act like it’s the next best thing to BBQ ribs.

I was still in high school then, but since I marched in SU band in 1983 and 1984, I was able to gather information from older band members.  Baton Rouge's news covered a great deal of the story, which ironically is hard to find in today's high tech informational world. It was told to me that the SU Board demanded that SU's band perform at Reagan's campaign rally at LSU. A lot of the band members didn't want to perform, but were being forced to or lose their scholarships.  Word had gotten around to other students at SU and a few started a protest rally on campus, demanding that Reagan come to SU to see and hear their demands.  Once they realized that that wasn't going to happen, sone students laid out in front of the buses transporting the band to LSU, which got the news media involved.  They captured pictures of SU campus security arresting and removing the students from blocking the buses.  The only thing I can find on that controversy is a LSU graduate student's thesis that talked about Reagan's campaign.  I'll see if I can find it and I'll post it on here.

Bluedog,

Here's a copy of the link to the thesis. The SU protest rally starts on page 92 to 96 in the document or 99 to 103 of the dropdown menu bar.  Also, after that event, funding for SU became less and less.  Basically during the Reagan years.  This is why I think our students need to get more involved in the politics at our universities and stop allowing the political puppets (governing board) make decisions that are political related. I believe events like this helped individuals like Cleo Fields get elected into state office and then as the youngest U.S. congressman.  At that time, SUBR was the largest HBCU in the country and Cleo Field used the voter registration numbers of SU's student body to get elected.  I was a freshman when he was SU's SGA President. Congressman Cedric Richmond pretty much have the same advantage with SUBR, SUNO, SU Law Center, and SU Ag being in his congressional district.  SU should demand that he do more for the university.  The only part of the SU System that is not in his district is SU Shreveport.

I said it once and I'll say it again screw those racist redneck folks. When they change their hearts about black people so will I. I am not a friend of my enemy. They are just like their parents and grandparents who stood in doors to stop blacks from getting an education, jobs and to stop voting. They love Trump because he pushes the agenda they wish they could. You can love them and sing their praises but as for me and mines screw them.

Ya'll act like we invented most of the stuff our bands are playing. Next you're going to say we have the better bands. But before you start on me, take a look at this clip of Ohio State's band. Yes when we play these schools the game gets ugly, and most of the time the half time gets uglier.

FASCINATING. Thanks for the history lesson.

Our band is fantastic considering its size and resources. We're not on the level of the Southern and A&T's, but we have been voted as the best DII HBCU band in the country for the second strait year. Maybe I should have posted WSSU's band for TC to see what a real band looks like. Any "fair" person can look at that clip I posted of Ohio State and see OSU is fantastic. You don't have to love that type of performance to see that. They say hate can make a person blind. Smart people don't always hate, they educate.

FUNNY THING ABOUT THAT SONG.  I HEARD IT FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME AS A FRESHMAN IN 1969 AT A MORGAN STATE FOOTBALL GAME.  WHEN I LATER HEARD IT AT OTHER CIAA VENUES I WAS AT FIRST PISSED BECAUSE I THOUGHT THAT MORGAN'S SONG HAD BEEN STOLEN!!

I "GOOGLED" IT.  ONE MIGHT BE A BIT SURPRISED ABOUT WHAT IS ON GOGGLE.

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHICH HBCU WAS THE FIRST TO PLAY "TALKING OT THE SIDE OF YOUR NECK"?
