Title: Will this be the year a SIAC team will make the playoffs?
Post by: dragon601713 on October 06, 2019, 01:48:00 PM
So far Miles, FVSU, and Albany State have a chance to make the playoffs.

I hope so.

Its just a matter of who will do better in the playoffs.

Miles and Albany State get my votes!

 The out of conference performance will be a factor.

Well if you only beating other SIAC teams then you ain't going nowhere.  Beating FBS and FCS teams does nothing for you either.

This is on point so let's explore.

I doubt if Savannah State's wins/loses affect the SIAC at this point however, if they do count their schedule will bring down the SOS. They lost to Fla Tech which is ranked 66th behind FVSU. Playing VUL and EWC probably hurt if they count SSU.  Charleston and Alcorn are no help.

Albany State losing Missisppi College will hurt unless they keep winning they are 2-2 in DII play. If they continue to win beating W. Georgia will definitely help and losing to the #1 Ranked school (Valdosta) actually should help.

Fort Valley - Not sure how much beating unranked Shorter and and Fla Tech will help. FAMU does nothing.

Morehouse - AAMU does nothing while Edward Waters probably hurts.

CAU - Losing to Livingstone hurts and losing to Allen probably has the SOS at 0.

Benedict - Losing to Fayetteville St and J.C. Smith probably hurt the SOS real bad.

Miles - Struggling against the team that lost to Allen probably hurts more than the loss to MO S&T.  Edward Waters is another killer to the SOS.

Central State - unranked Quicy and Sothwest Baptist appear to be headed for a losing season.  Then there's AAMU and Edward Waters again.

Tuskegee - Losing to Bama Stank means nothing, however losing to WSSU hurt especially since they are having a dismal season.  W. Alabama recently dropped out of top 25 so it might not be as bad.  But looky here Edward Waters again.  EWC is single handedly destroying the SIAC SOS this year.  I know they are trying to come in but they are hurting you now IMHO.

Kentucky State -Shines against FBS and FCS opponents then turned to shyt in conference. Here comes Edward Waters again and Lincoln Mo has lost to everybody.

Lane - two FCS, NAIA Texas College and you guessed it Edward Waters will have you on the couch doing the playoffs.

NOTE:  This is just one black man's opinion, right or wrong.

At this point, I think the SR2 rankings would look as follows:

1. Valdosta State
2. Lenoir-Rhyne
3. Wingate
4. Bowie State
5. West Florida
6. Virginia-Union
7. Carson-Newman

The top four are undefeated.  UWF has one loss and still has to play VSU.  LR and Wingate still have to play each other.  C-N has already lost to Wingate and still has to play LR.  Virginia-Union has a loss to LR and still has to play Bowie State.

As long as I add to my Ring Collection I'm fine and I don't need the playoffs. All my team has to do is win out and whatever will be will be. But either way I'll end 2019 with Six SIAC Rings on my fingers and seven if we win the SIAC again in Football. And then I'll be Seven times Undisputed Universal World SIAC Heavyweight Champion. Oh I'm beginning to feel like Ric Flair now. Wooooo!!!! ;D

There is a guy on the D2 forum that has been putting together his guess at the region rankings.  His week 6 rankings have Miles at #10.  Two of the teams ahead of them still have to play VSU, and one of the teams ahead of them still has to play L-R.

Miles' game with Edward Waters will not help them though.

Honestly, I get tired of seeing EWC on the schedules.  ::)
And there is no guarantee that they are joining the SIAC either. They've only been INVITED.

We've had to play them a couple of times when we couldn't get a D-II non-conference opponent.

Valdosta State is a d2 school in name only.  They are really a FCS.

With 11K-12K students, I'm surprised they have not made the move to FCS. I think their football team would still be quite competitive even on that level.

Football would thrive, but it would be at the expense of every other program.

When I was in the student government at VSU, I posed the question to the AD back then as to moving to FCS.  At that time, the money was prohibitive, and I doubt that has changed.    It's probably gotten worse.  VSU has since added women's soccer.  I think we would have to add at least one more women's sport due to Title IX.

If they give their football team 63 allowable scholarships to be FCS, they might have to add more than 1 women's sport,,,,,,,but won't they have to pony up 1 million dollars to move up from D2 to D1? If they ever do move up, I know Ga Southern will be happy to put them on their schedule as an FCS sacrificial lamb,,,,,,,,,,,,,

 Yes, as would any other D2 making the move to FCS/D1. And thats just for starters.  Unless that changes, I think we will rarely see ANY D2s looking to make the move to FCS/D1 anytime soon.

One thing to add to the regional rankings discussion is earned access.  If Miles wins out, they would likely be in position to bump somebody even if they didn't climb into the top 7.

Also of note, the NCAA has changed the rules on the brackets this year, and the bottom teams in the bracket may get moved to another region  as the NCAA will decide those moves based upon travel costs.

North Alabama studied the move, balked a little, and then jumped when they received a workable conference invitation.

The only two real conference possibilities for VSU would be the Southern Conference and the Big South.  The SoCon has stated that it will not accept any teams transitioning from D-II.  The Big South would be workable and would have some nice road game locations for football, but the other sports would have to travel more.

Mercer and Kennesaw  State would be good in-state games.  Samford would be interesting with the Chris Hatcher connection.

FAMU would be an absolute blast as it would be easy travel for both teams.

Such a VSU jump would open the door for West Florida and maybe eventually Florida Tech.

I just don't see it happening unless the D-II scheduling simply becomes impossible.
