I really hate this type of thing and it should not be encouraged.

Why?  What do you have against humor?

Because I don't think this type of thing is funny. Because it promotes the idea that women and girls "belong" to a man (and don't get me wrong here dads should reasonably protect their families). Because no one does this with their sons. Because why would you allow your daughter to go somewhere if you thought you needed to threaten the boy with a gun? Because did someone do that to him when he went to pick up her momma? It's just rude, inappropriate, communicating a threat. It's not funny.

???? Well I only see it as promoting an old joke. But hey even if you post a picture of the sky someone is bound to be offended.

Saw a pic last week where a young man and a lady were in the pic with what appeared to be the girl’s father  and brothers - all of her male family had automatic weapons in their hands.   The girl was throwing up the peace sign and the boy looked hella uncomfortable.

Couldn’t have been my son.  That pic would have never been taken.   I love my son just like you love your lil fast @zz daughter.  If it’s that serious y’all fools take her to the prom.

This pic is a little better I guess because it just has the dad with the gun and the young man isn’t in it, but still.

I get the joke, but I’m sensitive about black males and gun play.

Well maybe its a generational thing.  It was always said when you had a pretty girl baby you needed a new shotgun to keep all the boys away. I guess those of us in the AARP time range get it while the younger crowd thinks first about gun violence.

Again if I had posted this

someone would say its promoting the use of marijuana.

No I get the concept, and the pic you showed wasn’t as bad.  But the one I saw with the shirtless dudes with semiautomatic rifles  surrounding this little boy looking uncomfortable and the little ghetto chick with the peace sign just rubbed me the wrong way.

Bear makes a valid point that no one does that to their son. Boy can screw anybody he wants as long as she is not older than his mother. If that is the case,  mama will  bring out two shot guns.  But Baby girl can push grandpa up in a wheel chair and everybody will be happy.  "Look at them, they so cute together."

:brickwall:   Post a thread on a meme that's obviously staged and referring to an old joke and its an issue.  Post a thread about police actually shoots a mentally ill woman and crickets.  What the heyal is really going on on Onnidan.  :tiptoe:

1.  The story about the mentally ill person was posted about two hours ago - many have not had a chance to respond yet.

2.  Some people choose not to discuss depressing stuff.  It’s their prerogative

2.  Sh@t like that is probably why they don’t find the old joke  that funny anymore.

Anytime I see a pic like that one I think of the Ad Brian Kemp ran last year with that boy and that gun like someone really wants one of those mud ducks he calls daughters.  Toting that gun  and is probably softer than wet tissue paper.  ::)

I get the old joke. It's still not funny. It actually is just foolish. Why would you want to keep all the boys away from your daughter? Who kept you away from her momma? Like it's just foolish and it's still not funny. That doesn't mean that I don't get it. And it has nothing to do with age. My parents are in their late 70s. I was raised by older people! Not to mention, I'm the only girl child my parents had and not one person's son had a gun drawn on them when they came to pick me up for a date  . My dad doesn't even own guns.

And I can have thoughts about several things at once. Guns shouldn't be drawn in jest. They also shouldn't be drawn to threaten someone about your kid. If it's that bad YOU drive her to the prom.

That is true to some degree for me. I don't mind discussing those things if there is a plan of action. All too often black folk will come together and talk about what white folk have done, but once the conversation ends, our concern ends.  Those of you who throw those police stories up, what exactly are you doing to change the situation? Do you attend your neighborhood association meetings to discuss it? Do you have meetings with the officers who patrol your area? Do you go over and talk to your local patrol officer when you see them parked in your neighborhood?

If you are so outraged by the stuff you read online and are so compelled to post it, tell us also about the things you are doing to bring change. Here are a couple things i did this week alone.  I talked to neighborhood association about two homicides that occurred in town this week. We are looking for ways to condemn the property where those fools live since several folk have been shot there. The city has gotten funding for a pilot program to deal with gang violence. I plan to volunteer  my time when it is up and running.

I also stopped by the nearby towing company because those good ole boy drives use our  neighborhood as a short cut on the way to accidents. They travel over 60 miles an hour on a residential street. Why do tow truck need to rush to an accident anyway?

It's a very old practice that haa out lived it's time. For most of us, it is a joke. But I can see how Oue's actions could encourage a cave dweller in the same way white nationalist are set in motion by what they see on the web and read on blogs.

I actually had an amazing childhood and I don't have any trauma around anything to be perfectly honest.

When you post, is it not for discussion? Quite often I've read your posts and/or comments and agreed with you. But when posting all people aren't going to agree with you, me or anyone else who creates a post. My opinion is not an affront to you for posting but simply my comment/opinion. And the threat is implicit.

My threads are always open for discussion otherwise they would be locked.  Just from the tone of your previous posts I must say I was caught off guard.  I don't ever expect everyone to agree with me or always think what I post is funny.  However you previous post seemed take this thread to a place I had no intention for it to go.  As I said maybe its generational thing so we can agree to disagree, just like I disagree that there is a real implied threat.  However I respect your right to have that opinion and did not see it as an affront to me.  As I also said I'm not arguing just confused.

I could see why that picture, even if it was intended to be light-hearted is problematic.

Black men are already viewed as disposable violent, toxic thugs whose lives are of little value to society.

It also perpetuates the stereotype that young black men are these sexual deviants who need to be feared and threatened with violence.

No need for another black man to go there.

In this day in age with police and other institutions using violence to justify our deaths, photos like that aren't funny.

???................interesting.

This thread has taken a trajectory that I never anticipated. And my reading of Que’s various posts suggests he did not anticipate the trajectory as well.

I was the first poster to respond to this thread. And the ONLY reason I did is because Que kinda used me as a “setup” for this topic. He intended to be humorous, and that is EXACTLY how I perceived it. I honestly thought from the beginning that pic was staged, and Que confirmed as much.

I initially thought the “opposition” to this thread was a tad over-the-top. It’s just humor I concluded. But because I have so much respect for you peeps on onnidan, I began to try to understand and process what you were saying. And although I STILL think the pic^^^ in the lead post was fairly innocuous, I understand the bases for u peeps’ objections.

Anyway, again, I REALLY enjoy communing with you peeps on this board. We ALL want to be understood and respected. And I surely want to be at the forefront of that.

God bless! .......now, a big cyber GROUP HUG!!  :hugs:

Que^^^Ms. Strike “was” old enough to have attended her senior prom when it occurred - ELEVEN YEARS AGO!!  She became a mommy one year ago and turns 30 at the end of the year. Her prom date is now married and the father of three small children (bless HIS heart  :o ).

I wonder what some of the onnidan peeps with children - especially daughters - who are CURRENTLY of prom age have to say about dad in the pic^^^with the shotgun.

Or, better still, maybe we should let this topic go. Don’t want Big Que to suffer MORE abuse than he has already endured.

Strike -

I will only say that the time to lay the foundation of expectations is long before the young lad shows up on prom night. The twins were asked to attend several proms from different male friends of theirs, but kindly rejected all “promposals” as they are now being called.

So, for me, the symbolic shotgun pic and imagery begins the first time them fools try to rap to either of the twins. Plus they clearly tell these boys the real deal....
