STATESBORO, Ga. (AP) — Georgia Southern fired coach Tyson Summers on Sunday, halfway through his second season with the school and with the Eagles 0-6.

The Eagles were blown out 55-20 on Saturday by previously winless Massachusetts, dropping Summers' record to 5-13. Summers is a Georgia native who was defensive coordinator at Colorado State and Central Florida before being hired by Georgia Southern to replace Willie Fritz after the 2015 season.

Summers got off to a bad start not only with a losing season in year one but by moving the team away from the triple-option offense that has brought the program decades of success. Georgia Southern won six national titles in Division I-AA (now FCS), and then won 18 games in its first two seasons playing in FBS, the highest level of Division I football.

Feels funny even seeing 0-6 and Ga Southern in the same sentence. Oh well...carry on and fly high, Eagles  :tongue2:

If he was winning with the new offense he would still be the coach.  Problem is that he can't  run his offense with the personnel he has because they were recruited to play in a triple-option offense so he was destined to fail until he had his recruits in place.

They should have hired the brother that won the bowl game for them. The players were crazy about him and they looked real good in that bowl game.

I remember when they hired VanGorder and he took  away the triple option. And you know what the results from that was. He didn't last long and bounced. Georgia Southern is very finicky when it comes to their style of play. I remember Chris Hatcher was there and he tried to bring his air raid attack from Valdosta State. He only lasted for two years. Two years is the max for any Georgia Southern coach. They haven't been the same since Paul Johnson left and took his option offense with him.

that's all...    :tiptoe:

They need to hire  Dell McGee

McGee, the former head coach at Columbus’ Carver High School, came to Georgia from Georgia Southern, where he served as running backs coach for two seasons, as well as the interim coach for a bowl game. He also worked at Auburn as an analyst during the 2013 season.

He was the coach in the bowl game.

Well he should have run it until he got his personnel in place.

You have to do stuff gradually in Statesboro - can't change from the rip.  They don't play that - no matter how rational the reason for the losing - it matters not.

Unfortunately you can't  half way commit to your style of play.  Maybe if he had a couple of option plays it would have help. His firing was probably inevitable.

They ran the option in 2015, but it was from the pistol. The offense changed depending on the QB that ran the offense.  GSU had one QB that was a better runner and the other was a better passer.  The offensive personnel has changed over time to where the linemen are bigger.  In the past, GSU had smaller linemen that could get to the second level,  My point is the personnel is there to have a good offense,

So you all think the next coach should go back to the triple option wishbone or just bring in his own offensive philosophy?

It seems as if the option works well for GSU because they won SIX national championships and a bowl game running the option. It is the wishbone, bit it called the Hambone-I.  As PJ stated it is a spread offense and Tracy Ham was the perfect QB for the offense.  Ham could run and throw the ball well.  During his day, GSU could beat you with the run or the pass.  Recently, GSU ran the pistol which also allows a team to run the option, but the offense is a one cut and go attack.  Plus you can run the spread, in fact, most of our HBCUs run some form of the pistol.
