I ran into some SWAC family from Alabama A&M and Texas Southern University while checking in. They flew all the way from Houston.

I think the attendance will surprise people.  Negros are so damn quick to shoot down something that  has our culture front and center.

I think we all agreed that the SWAC was going to be thick in Atlanta.  It's funny how we are supporting teams that will get the funds to kick our butts next year.  Go Aggies!

Funny I recall reading about how deep a connection the meac had in the ATL.  So now it's the SWAC.

Man, Atlanta feels like a huge CIAA Tournament right now. Everywhere I've been today, there were HBCU alums rocking their gear with car flags up. I went shopping for a coat (super cold here) at the Atlantic Station and ran into some trash-talking Aggies from Raleigh. It feels like a big family atmosphere thus far.

Only folks i have seen are from Mississippi. JSU and Acorn folks at our Hotel.

Met some HBCU alums from JCSU and ECSU at Bougaloo Lounge last night, but they live in ATL.

Prive for the party last night was just local folks.

I wouldn't compare this to CIAA, nut it's been a good time so far.

How many MEAC fans (not from Atlanta) did you run into?  On TV the A&T crowd looked real sparse.  The TV cameras were on the visitor's side of the stadium, so you got to see the A&T side most of the game.  The Alcorn side looked like a real good crowd.

Slope, I did see a guy from Morgan State but that was it.  The Alcorn side had a lot of SWAC folks, especially from JSU.  It would have been nice to have seen more fans on the Aggies' side but they were very vocal.

I think this event will blossom into something very special once everyone gets on board to support.

You know aggies are always loud and uncouth, LOL.   In the past these bowl games have been created.  They start strong and then die out.  I am not sure MEAC fans will ever get out board like the SWAC folks.  We forget about football after Thanksgiving.

Two different cultures.  Both conferences have their weakness and strengths.  One of the strengths that SWAC has is attendance and they play in bigger games.  They are used to games like this.

They might travel, but it would be more likely for them to travel to a weekend getaway in Atlanta for a bowl and do some Christmas shopping rather than a random weekend in October to Durham NC.

I mean it's doable no doubt, but would a matchup between UAPB and NC A & T be attractive enough for a JSU grad to travel to?  If they're in NC sure, but VA or Maryland?  Maybe maybe not.

It will have to grow into a huge event like the CIAA Tournament. Folks fly in from all over regardless of who is playing.

All this talk about where the Swac fans will or won't  travel is the most ridiculous conversation I've seen.  Swac fans don't  have to prove their support for their school or conference to anyone. They have led the entire FCS in attendance every year of it's existence except for one.

What meac fans need to do is stop talking and follow the Swac lead. Stop having such a crab in the barrel  mentality when it comes to other schools participation in the bowl game and support it. It's really that simple.

If you are referring to the CIAA tournament you cannot compare the two.  Folks come to Charlotte during the CIAA tournament and they don't even know there is a basketball tournament going on.  Most of those folks have no ties to any CIAA school or HBCU.  People don't even go to the games anymore during the tournament.  They just came to Charlotte to party.  I have said for the past several years that the CIAA needs to move out of Charlotte and back to a city where fans can come watch basketball again.

They are the same. The CIAA Tournament games are packed Friday and Saturday nights.  We can make this an event on the same scale as the CIAA Tournament. Progressive thinking and proper planning will get the job done.

I was at the Celebration Bowl and I can also confirm that the concourses were very thick outside of the seating area, but I would have to also concede that Alcorn's concourse was very thick.  At halftime I went to sent on the Alcorn side and was beside a Morgan State alum.  We were cheering for the Aggies.

And as is customary with SWAC schools, other than the country feel of course, Alcorn's band was blowing on A&T all day and in more of a celebratory mode.

How do SWAC schools give you a "country feel"? Were there people riding in on John Deere tractors, dressed in overalls?

Almost Drumma,

but don't take the comment too seriously.  The people who I was there with there were four of us.  Two from Savannah State, one from Central, and one from Howard demanded we go on the Alcorn side because their fans were way more crunk and they provided the type of game day atmosphere which made it fun.  But boy they were good ole country folk.  Nothing wrong with that is there?

The other observation was that many of the MEAC supporters from institutions other than A&T wore A&T colors while many of the SWAC supporters still wore there individual institutions colors.

How was the eye-candy?
I'd give the Eye Candy a solid A.   My wife was shopping so I didn't have to play "sneak-a-peek" the whole game.  I already knew A&T women were fine as hell, but Alcorn had some sistas that were off the chain too.  There was a group of Alcorn ladies (Charmaine, Gloria, and Tameka)  that was sitting near me and my homeboy (also married), that had our attention for much of the game.  Especially when they got up to shake them pom-poms .

I ran into some SWAC family from Alabama A&M and Texas Southern University while checking in. They flew all the way from Houston.

Those Texas Southern fans are Sherry, Cheryl and Linda (all lifelong season ticket holders and committed National Alumni Association members).  I personally know at least another 20 off the top of my head of other Tigers who made the trip from Houston to Atlanta.

Our Atlanta chapter held a reception for our alums who came into town.

I can easily afford a ticket to the CIAA Tournament.  But I have not had reason to go to Charlotte since NCCU left the tournament in 2007.  I am a college baske. all fan first foremost.   I have no desire to go to Charlotte just for parties.  That is a waste of my time and money.  When I sent to the CIAA i went to the alumni sponsored event and an annual feast put on by a lot of my fellow alumni every Friday afternoon at the home of one of our alumns.

It will have to grow into a huge event like the CIAA Tournament. Folks fly in from all over regardless of who is playing.

DRUMMA1,

I don't know what you consider a packed house, but the CIAA has not sold out in years.  I have spoken with long time CIAA  fans who live in Charlotte and still attend the tournament.   They have told me that the tournament in not the same.  They said for the championship game last year the lower bowl nowhere near full.  Very few people were on the second level.   Poor leadership from the commissioner and presidents has caused this.  Thousands upon thousands of people come to town and never go to a game or even near the arena.  HE CIAA WILL NEVER BE THE SAME AGAIN.   2 -3 generations of students were forgotten about getting them excited about attending the tournament.

Understandable. I get that same country vibe at NC HBCU games.

DRUMMA1,

You left North Carolina to go to college in Mississippi and you became country.   I have heard on you tube clips several Southern U fans chanting "COUNTRY!!!  COUNTRY! !!!!" when the boom marches into your the stadium playing Get Ready.   As Tom Joyner says everytime you all play that song 0the JSU fans act like it is the time they have heard that song.

For whatever reason people think the two are interchangeable and they are not.

Ok folks let's be honest and keep it real. There is only one great city in the south period, and everyone else is just here. The only city that matters is Atlanta. The rest of you all are just taking up land. This is why the  owl will be successful. Everything in and about Atlanta the gateway to the south is excellent!

Ha!

In Atlanta's defense most of the ones who think they have "arrived" come from everywhere else. The ones who are truly from "A-Lana" are good smart down to earth people who work hard and know how to have a good time.

Jackson is about the size of Greensboro and it's more "urban" than it is country.

"Get Ready" is our theme song, similar to NCCU's rift chant ("Take Your Time"). You sound like a low key fan.
