These schools should use the same method that the higher ups use. Find a young coach on a lower level who has something to prove, pay them more money than they've ever made and let them grind! !!  There are a bunch of good coaches in the CIAA that would jump at the opportunity to prove themselves on the "so called" Division I level.

In order for that to work they would have to pay the coach more than the president/chancellor.  Which HBCU is going to do that?

Not true at all.  Chancellors make alot of money.  My suggestion is/was to pay the lower level coach more than he or she has ever made.  Most coaches in the CIAA are making between 80k- 120k.  Take a coach thats making 85k or 90k and pay them 120k.  That certainly would not be more than the chancellor.  Might be more (or close to more) than the AD but thats the norm across the country.  Who cares who makes more.  Get the job done and get championships and graduate studen-athletes

Are you aware that Shaka Smart makes $1.2 million a year?  What HBCU is going to pay a coach that much to coach?  What HBCU president/chancellor is making $1.2 million a year?  To compete in D-1 basketball you get what you pay for.  Paying a coach $120K is not going to cut it.  Assistant coaches at other D-1 schools make more than that. 

In order for your plan to work is to pay the coach more than the president/chancellor of the HBCU.  The coach will be much better known than the president/chancellor of the HBCU.  Most people would know the school the following coaches are Coach K, Roy Williams, Tom Izzo, Bill Self, Pat Head-Summitt.  How many can name the president/chancellor of those schools?  When HBCUs hire presidents/chancellors that put the school's interest ahead of their ego D-1 athletics will soar.

I agree. I would be happy with both of the Shaw U coaches!

Cooper-Dyke to be new women’s coach at Texas Southern
Cynthia Cooper-Dyke stepped down Tuesday as women’s basketball coach at North Carolina-Wilmington and is expected to accept the same position at Texas Southern.

TSU will likely make the hiring official Friday.

“We appreciate everything Cynthia has done for the program and wish her the very best as she returns home,” said Jimmy Bass, UNC-Wilmington’s director of athletics in a release on the school’s website. “She coached our teams to over 40 wins in two seasons and a pair of post-season berths. I’m sure she will continue that legacy of success in Houston.”

Cooper-Dyke, a basketball hall of famer and former WNBA star with the Houston Comets, leaves UNC-Wilmington after leading the Seahawks to two WNIT appearances in two seasons. Before that, she led Prairie View A&M to an 86-72 record and four postseason appearances, including the program’s first two NCAA Tournament bids, from 2006-10.

“Cynthia is our sole finalist,” said TSU athletic director Charles McClelland, who hired Cooper-Dyke in 2006 when he was athletic director at Prairie View. “Upon final approval, Cynthia will be our next head coach at Texas Southern University.”

TSU finished 5-26 in 2011-12 under coach Yolanda Wells-Broughton, who resigned April 6.

North Carolina A&T candidates

The search at North Carolina A&T is really heating up. I keep hearing that there are three leaders right now. They are:

Horace Broadnax – Head Coach Savannah State. Has really turned around the Savannah State program. Won 2 games his first season (2005-06) – led his squad to 21-wins and an NIT bid this year. Also spent five seasons as the head coach at Bethune-Cookman. Played collegiately at Georgetown and won a National Championship in 1884. Won bunch of post-season COY awards this year.

Sean Woods – Head Coach Mississippi Valley State. Another guy who has turned around a program. MVSU has gotten better in each of Woods four seasons there. Won 21 games this past year and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Was also the recipient of many post season awards this year including the SWAC COY and the Ben Jobe Award.

Bobby Collins – Head Coach Winston-Salem State. Another 21 game winner in 2011-12. Also spent four seasons as the head coach at Hampton. Won the CIAA Championship this past season. Seems to be the local favorite here, and enjoys the support of a large group of alums.
