Full story

President Barack Obama announced Friday that the administration will not require religious-affiliated institutions to cover birth control for their employees.

Capping weeks of growing controversy, Obama said he was backing off a newly announced requirement for religious employers to provide free birth control coverage even if it runs counter to their religious beliefs.

Why are the so-called leaders concerned about contraception when they didnt give a hoot about protecting altar boys at the hands of priests?

nod.........yep, this WHOLE so-called "controversy" REEKS with hypocrisy.  Prominently absent from the national discussion of this matter is that the OVERWHELMING majority of Catholic women practice "birth control," notwithstanding the edicts from The Vatican.

Additionally, ole Mitt Romney was running around accusing the President of attacking religion when someone reminded Mitt that his Romneycare health legislation that he signed into law in Massachusetts had SIMILAR mandates for providing contraceptive services.  Roll Eyes

Btw, I wonder if the so-called "blue collar" working white folks who we are told have suffered so grievously during the Bush II inspired economic downturn took notice of John Boehner's actions during this controversy.  Boehner promised "emergency" legislation to overturn the White House's policy if it didn't reverse itself.  Well, here's a query for Mr. Boehner:

Where is the DAMN emergency legislation to pass the President's jobs and other economic proposals to get people back to WORK?Huh?Angry

Freaking no good, slimy, LYING, hypocritical Republicans.  Roll Eyes

Typical democratic deflection.  It's good to know you agree that Obama caved.

I guess saying he caved in is one way to described what the President did. Another way to describe it is to say, he resolved a very difficult political question involving two compelling and competing points of view to the satisfaction of both sides.

The title from the article linked in the opening post:

Obama revamps contraceptive policy

.......................

Instead, workers at such institutions will be able to get free birth control coverage directly from health insurance companies.

"Under the rule, women will still have access to free preventive care that includes contraceptive services no matter where they work. That core principle remains," he said from the White House briefing room.

"Religious liberty will be protected and a law that requires free preventative care will not discriminate against women," Obama added.

Planned Parenthood responded Friday with a statement, saying, "The Obama administration has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring all women will have access to birth control coverage, with no costly co-pays, no additional hurdles, and no matter where they work ...  we will be vigilant in holding the administration and the institutions accountable for a rigorous, fair and consistent implementation of the policy ..."

Planned Parenthood doesn't appear to think he "caved in"
