DAYTONA BEACH -- Bethune-Cookman offensive coordinator Rob Spence has accepted an offer to be the quarterbacks coach at Rutgers, becoming the second Wildcats assistant this week to take a job with a higher-level school.

Wide receivers/recruiting coordinator Allen Suber said earlier this week he is leaving his alma mater to become the receivers coach at the University of Massachusetts.

"It's tough to lose a good coach like Rob, a quality guy and a very thorough coach," B-CU head coach Brian Jenkins said Wednesday night. "It has been a tough week. It shows the caliber of the coaches we have in this program that (FBS) programs are showing a strong interest in hiring them.

"I'm not shocked, just stunned a little bit. Evidently people are really taking notice of us."

Spence, 53, is the third B-CU assistant to be hired away by another program since the season ended.

Quarterbacks coach Joe Dailey left last month to take a similar job at Liberty.

Spence, a former offensive coordinator at Toledo, Clemson and Syracuse, was with the Wildcats for one season.

"This is a great place. I enjoyed it," Spence said of B-CU. "I loved the players and the staff."

Spence joins the Rutgers staff of Kyle Flood, who was promoted to head coach last week after Greg Schiano was hired as head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

"Kyle Flood is a former player of mine, the first player I recruited as a college coach (at Iona in 1989)," Spence said. "So, I've known him a long time."

Jenkins, who coached on the Rutgers staff with Flood in 2009 before he came to B-CU, said he has no timetable to fill the coaching vacancies in what is the third consecutive offseason he will have to find a new offensive coordinator.

"I'm not going to rush this thing," he said. "I'm going to take my time as always and find quality guys. I'm not going to panic."

I didn't know that Allen Suberman was coaching at his alma mater. This guy was awesome during his playing days at BCU.
