Full story

Coming off his big win in Florida last night, GOP front-runner Mitt Romney told CNN this morning that helping the poor is not his priority, suggesting that Democrats worry enough about the “plight of the poor” already:

ROMNEY: I’m not concerned with the very poor. We have a safety net there. If it needs repair, I’ll fix it. I’m not concerned about the very rich, they’re doing just fine. I’m concerned about the very heart of the America. [..]

HOST: You just said said, ‘I’m not concerned about the very poor because they have a safety net.’ But I think there are a lot of very poor Americans who are struggling who would say, that sounds odd. [...]

ROMNEY: The challenge right now — we will hear from the Democrat party the plight of the poor. And there’s no question it’s not good being poor. And we have a safety net to help those that are very poor, but campaign is focused is on middle-income Americans. My campaign — you can choose where to focus. You can focus on the rich, that’s not my focus. You can focus on the very poor, that’s not my focus.

Nice pre-emptive move, y04.

I actually thought this line was more bothersome than the one that has gotten the headlines:
Quote
The challenge right now — we will hear from the Democrat party the plight of the poor. And there’s no question it’s not good being poor.

and he ended that segment with:
Quote
You can focus on the very poor, that’s not my focus.

The trouble for Romney is not the precise words or perhaps - unfairly to him - even his intent.

The problem for him is how this "insensitive" statement plays into the "narrative" (the media's new favorite word) that he is a pampered rich guy who is "out of touch" with "regular people."

He's not out of touch.  He told the truth.  The problem is people don't want to hear the truth.

He only said publically what so many others believe and are afraid to admit publically. He's gonna get flamed for it but real talk, none of the candidates and the vast majority of politicians, elected officials give a rats derrière about the poor.

It can be argued at a high level if the poor is overtly concerned with their plight. I know that's a general statement as I know some who really work hard and just can't seen to survive/get ahead. There are also a subset that is content on putting forth the absolute minimum (and even less in some cases) yet expect to be taken care of like they are royalty.

The two of you are so pathetic that you will suck and swallow anything the Republicans throw at you.  Your integrity and morals have been lost, so it doesn't surprise me that you idiots will support a disaster (Mitt Romney) waiting to happen.

This s**t is so scary....

George Bush
John McCain
Sarah Palin
Newt Gingrich
Mitt Romney
Rick Santorum
Ron Paul
Herman Cain
Michele Bachmann

Y, It's not so much about him making a point that is true, rather the boldness of his statement, as a presidential candidate, about his neglect for the poor American citizens. Contrary to what many might believe, the truth won't always set you free.  As the POTUS, aren't you suppose to stand for all people in need and not just a segment of the population?

Question for y04:

Since you began both this and your thread on the poor in the same time frame, do you interpret Romney's statement to mean that under his presidency the govt will not "take care" of the poor?

I PERSONALLY LOVE IT WHEN OLD "WILLARD" GOES OFFF SCRIPT.  EVERYTIME HE OPENS HIS MOUTH HE SIMPLY SHOWS HOW OUT OF TOUCH HE IS WITH REALITY.   HE HAS ABSOLUTELY NO CONCEPTUAL SELF-AWARENESS.   HE SAID NOT A WORD THAT WAS UNTRUE REGARDING THE POOR.  HOWEVER, BASIC, JUST BASIC POLITICAL SKILLS REGARDING THE ABILITY TO ATTEMPT TO INFLUENCE PEOPLE WOULD HAVE PRECLUDED MOST OF US FROM HAVING SAID THOSE WORDS.  JUST HOW MANY PEOPLE WHO WILL NOT OR HAVE NOT THE ABILITY TO PARSE EVERY WORD SPOKEN BY POLITICIANS DO YOU THINK HE OFFENDED?  HELL, EVEN HIS OWN CONSERVATIVE REPUBLICAN SUPPORTERS HAVE BEEN COMPLAINING, LOUDLY,  JUST HOW STUPID AND POLITICALLY NAIVE HIS STATEMENTS WERE.

SOMEONE MUST HAVE TOLD HIM OF THE REACTION THE POTUS GOT WHEN SINGING A FEW LINES FROM "LET'S STAY TOGETHER".  SO WHAT DOES THIS IDIOT DO?   HE TRIES TO SING TOO' "AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL".  BTW, HE BUTCHERED ONE OF MY FAVORITE PATRIOTIC SONGS.   I LOVE RAY CHARLES'  VERSION OF THAT SONG.  IT ACTUALLY CAN BRING A TEAR TO MY EYE.  WILLARD MITT ROMNEY'S VERSION MADE ME A LITTEL SICK.   HERE IS A LITTLE ADVICE, NEVER OPEN YOUR MOUTH TO SING IN PUBLIC UNLESS YOU CAN ACTUALLY CARRY A TUNE.

HELL EVEN OLD "9-9-9" CAN AT LEAST CARRY A TUNE.  lol

Huh?.............uhhhh, sir (madam?), forgive me, but what purpose would be served by actually meeting these "individuals"?

Surely, you don't think a "personal" encounter would result in you getting them to change their philosophical point-of-view on various issues, do you?

I would kindly appreciate your response.  Smiley

But you have to be focused on the poor. In fact those safety nets need fixing as more and more people fall on it from the middle class. I should know this personally; I'm one that fell onto that net.

What "the truth" did he say, y04?

That he was not concerned?
