Allen West to leave House seat for one to the north

U.S. Rep. Allen West announced Tuesday he will leave his district to seek re-election in a more solidly Republican district being created to the north, as Rep. Tom Rooney vacates that territory to seek a new seat to the west.

The arrangement strengthens their party's chances in the general election, particularly for West, an outspoken and controversial figure whose district is about evenly split between Republicans and Democrats and appeared likely to become more Democratic under current redistricting proposals.

The departure of West, R-Plantation, raises Democrats' chances of taking the seat, which runs along coastal Broward and Palm Beach counties. Contenders include Fort Lauderdale businessman Patrick Murphy and former West Palm Beach Mayor Lois Frankel..............

West, who has served just over a year in Congress, said he will leave his 22nd District and attempt to win election in the proposed 18th District, drawn to encompass St. Lucie, Martin and northeastern Palm Beach counties.

"After much prayer, reflection and discussion with my close friends and family, I am announcing today my decision to seek reelection in Florida's proposed 18th Congressional district," West said "…As a 22-year United States Army veteran who commanded troops in combat, one should never underestimate my ability to be a strategic thinker."

Democrats took the opportunity to ridicule the retired lieutenant colonel for what they portrayed as a retreat from a tough fight.

"We feel like we chased Allen West out of this district," said Frankel campaign spokesman Greg Richardson. "So Lois is going to continue to run in this district."

Murphy issued a statement Tuesday evening slamming West.

"Allen West went from talking tough this weekend and telling progressives to 'get the hell out of this country' to abandoning the people who elected him," he said. "There is no other way to interpret this: Allen West is a coward. The truth is that the maps are far from set and I will continue to monitor the redistricting process closely."
