Redtails: Honoring the Tuskegee Airmen and taking a break from the usual media buffoonery
By Robert E. Pierre

George Lucas has been making the rounds this week to talk about the upcoming release of his movie, Red Tails. Lucas, the creator of Star Wars, put up $58 million of his own money toward the film after being turned down by all the major movie houses.

Lucas said executives worried that the majority-black cast wouldn’t put butts in the seats, even though that cast includes Terrence Howard, Cuba Gooding Jr.,

“They don’t believe there’s any foreign market for it and that’s 60 percent of their profit…I showed it to all of them and they said ‘No. We don’t know how to market a movie like this,’” Lucas said during an appearance on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

On social networks and in private conversations, many black people have answered Lucas’s revelation by telling their friends and family members--and anyone else who will listen--that it’s imperative that they see the movie when it opens on January 20. According to the New York Post, there is a screening scheduled at the White House.

Those who have seen early screening have raved about Redtails. Among those who plugged the movie was Nick Saban, head coach of the National Champion Alabama Crimson Tide. He took his team to see the movie prior to their thrashing of LSU earlier this week.

“We went to see the movie Red Tails last night, which I would recommend to anybody, but those guys’ motto was the last plane, the last bullet, the last man, the last minute, we fight,” Saban said after the game.

I hope that as many folks as possible will pack the theaters on opening weekend.

(Carlo Allegri - AP) We certainly need a break from the typical buffoonery that is passed off by the movie industry as representative of our stories. (And yes, I am including the Tyler Perry movies that so many people love.)

Just the imagery of the men portrayed in the trailer is worth the price of admission. Whether the film gets the story of the famed Tuskegee airmen exactly right is beside the point. It’s just important for everyone who has a story- regardless of race, gender or sexuality - to tell them and spread them as widely as possible. That ensures that history isn’t simply somebody else’s story.

This looks like it will be a great flick.  Clips of Terrence Howard playing the part based on B.O. Davis alone are worth the price of admission.

It is doubtful, but I hope they will bring Redtails to Panama!

I hope everyone will go out on OPENING NIGHT to support the film.  THAT makes a statement to funders of Black film.

In 2001, I met General Davis shortly after he wrote his autobiography. I am glad I had the opportunity to meet him. I had a brief conversation with him about some of his experiences. He would die July 4, 2002. He autographed my copy of his book, "Benjamin O. Davis Jr., American: An Autobiography" His autograph and book is one of my prize possessions. I can say that Gen. Davis considered himself a conservative and politically a Republican.

What does that have to do with anything

What does it have to do with anything...regards to this thread? Why you dumb a--. If you had a grain of sense, you would ask me what was he like at time. I tell you it has everything to do with the story of these outstanding and courageous men and their story. General Davis was part (an integral part I may add) of their story. I was fortunate enough to meet him and talk with him directly about some of his experiences in WWII. Also, I cherish the words he penned in the book I own.

You don't know that to be a fact. You're just guessing...

BELIEVE IT OR NOT, THE PURPOSE OF INITIALLY POSTING THIS WAS SOLELY TO HELP PROMOTE A LITTLE KNOWN STORY ABOUT A GROUP OF GENUINE AMERICAN WARRIORS AND HEROES.   I PERSONALLY NEVER GAVE A MOMENTS THOUGHT AS TO THE PERSONAL POLITICS OF A SINGLE MEMBER OF THE TUSKEGEE AIRMEN NOR DO I EVEN CARE NOW.  THIS IS ONE INSTANCE WHERE I WILL NOT PLAY PARTISAN POLITICS AND I ASK THAT YOU ALL DO THE SAME.

SEE THE MOVIE BECAUSE IT DEALS WITH A LITTLE KNOWN ASPECTS OF AMERICAN HISTORY, THAT ALL AMERICANS CAN AND SHOULD BE KNOWLEDGEABLE AND PROUD OF.

When Gen Davis was growing up and during his formative years, almost all Black folks were Republicans.  He and his generation assessed the two parties and concluded which one best represented their best interests: the GOP.

No one here would suggest that he and others were brainwashed or could not think for themselves.

However, it is only fair and accurate to point out that the GOP of those days included moderate Republicans like Eisenhower, Javits, Keating, Perry and many others, who would be considered RINOs and would be facing primary challenges from the Right if alive today.
[http://onnidan1.com/forum/index.php/topic,59932.0.html Thanks, SoFlo]

During the 60's, Black people began to reassess their options and came gradually to a different political conclusion, as they began to take power in the South through the Democratic Party and as many whites - who had voted for Democrat politicians (Conservatives) who opposed Black voting rights -  began voting for Republicans (Conservatives).

There are multiple excellent reasons for Black folks these days to choose the Dems over the Repubs. And there is no basis, just because someone sees it a different way, to claim that Black voters cannot think for themselves - all of a sudden when presumably the same person would say that "we" were thinking for ourselves when we were monolithically Republicans.

So, Oldsport, I am glad for you that you had an opportunity to meet Gen. Davis.  He was a great man..  His being a Republican is to be quite expected and not unusual at all.

If you were trying to make a point beyond that, you didn't.

WOULD LILE TO SUGGEST THAT YOU SEE THE MOVIE WHEN IT DEBUTS, THIS FRIDAY.

The movie Red Tails about the Tuskeegee Airmen premieres this weekend. As you may know a movie's first weekend can  make or break a picture. I think that we as black people should try to support this movie.  The executive producer of this movie is George Lucas, yeah that George Lucas from Star Wars and Indiana Jones.  He gave an interview about the movie to the Daily Show's Jon Stewart. Check it out http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/mon-january-9-2012/george-lucas
