Marching bands suspended in DeKalb over FAMU ties

The alleged hazing in Florida A&M University's band has led to the suspension of all marching band activities in DeKalb County high schools.

School system officials announced Wednesday afternoon that they are suspending all marching band activities pending an investigation of "possible inappropriate activities" among  band members, alumni advisors, band directors and others.

System spokesman Walter Woods said officials started asking questions at Southwest DeKalb High School because of connections to alleged hazing incidents at FAMU. Robert Champion, the FAMU band member who died, and another member, Bria Shante Hunter, who was injured, graduated from Southwest DeKalb. Two of three FAMU band members charged with injuring Hunter also hailed from the high school.


The system investigation unearthed some troubling finds, Woods said. He was not willing to disclose their nature yet.

I don't want to assume anything but this quote is disheartening. As a former HS bandsman, I know how silly these kids can get. I hope it's not what I think it could be.

This organization was founded on December 18, 1994 in Tallahassee, Florida. The basis for this organization is to establish unity, sisterhood and brotherhood for band members from Georgia at many different colleges. This organization originated at Florida A&M University and vastly spreaded from there.

I am at a lost. If this so called "Red Dawg" group was formed for the purpose of band members of Florida A&M that is representing the state of Georgia, then why is it only band members from Southwest Dekalb High School and why is it they are the only ones being targeted? I know very well that Florida A&M "Marching 100" has many students from the state of Georgia, as well as, band directors that directs various high school in the state. So, where are all of these other members that represent this group from the state of Georgia? Shouldn't those be targets as well?

This still does not exonerate FAMU from liabilities.  This guy's death happened while a student at FAMU, not SWD.  Cholly, I understand what you are saying, all of this Red Dawg stuff started and is related to SWD, however, the incidents invovling Champion and Bria are related to FAMU directly.

THAT is yet to be determined.

Remember earlier in the fall when that transfer basketball player was stabbed to death by her lover in her off-campus apartment?

Did people say THAT was related to FAMU because she played on the Basketball team?

Yogi, I can tell you for a FACT that every single member of the Band AND staff have been EXTENSIVELY interviewed during the course of BOTH investigations.

It isn't people being "targeted"; it's people who committed crimes being arrested and or expelled from the University.

The rabbit hole just goes deeper concerning the Marching 100.

All I know is that FAMU as well as BCU heavily recruits the bands in Dekalb county and have been for years.

That was a totally different scenario. It was more personal and not a institutional issue.
