Yes I was at the game.

Just because SSU was wrong, does the band have to be wrong as well?

Did you not read why I believe Dr. Nelms removed those band members?

Yes I read that very weak argument.  It is easy to say that when you were up in the stands.  Why would football players run through a band knowing that they could knock down a female? shrug  Our band students acted in defense and got punished.  I guess our administration would prefer that someone in the band would have gotten knocked out by those huge football players. Roll Eyes

Yes,  the SSU players were wrong for going through the band.  But did you see who pushed whom first?  Was it a male or a female?   You know band members take exception to anyone breaking their ranks.  I agree with M&G in saying that Dr. Nelms probably said the bands should have used their brains instead of their fists.

Why am I not suprised? shrug

You have not answered my question yet.

It really doesn't even matter.  What's done is done so let's move on.

A typical response from you when you don't have a logical answer.   Both sides were in the wrong.

Yes there is a general rule among HBCU bands that no cutting of the ranks is to be tolerated. But it's stupid for the band to pick a fight with a football team.  crazy You're not gonna win that battle no matter how you slice it. Football players pancake people for scholarships and they are completely padded from head to toe. What are you gonna do, hit them with a piccolo?

Same thing happened to NSU's band at Hampton in 1992. We just let them go.

John McCann column: Battle of the Band?
http://www.heraldsun.net/printer_friendly/15825410

by John McCann The Herald Sun 09.29.11 - 02:00 am

Quote
"Sunny days, everybody loves them,

Tell me, baby, can you stand the rain?

Storms will come, this we know for sure,

Can you stand the rain?

-- "Can You Stand the Rain," New Edition"

A sportswriter in the press box at O'Kelly-Riddick Stadium the other night asked if I was enjoying the scenery.

The dancers of N.C. Central’s Marching Sound Machine were shimmying and sashaying all over the field.

But I actually was enjoying the music. For real.

The Sound Machine sure can play.

But the band hit a sour note just before kickoff.

Having finished warming up, Savannah State’s players began making their way off the field to await the start of the game. As the Tigers were leaving, some of them cut through the Sound Machine’s formation at the edge of the visitors’ sideline.

All you-know-what broke loose!

It was musicians clutching instruments versus football players in pads toting helmets. Oddsmakers would have given the advantage to the football players, although a Sound Machine drum major acted like he was ready to handle business with that baton of his.

The situation never got out of control. Law-enforcement officials and NCCU leaders quashed it. Nobody was arrested, but a couple of band members were escorted off the field and will be dealt with by NCCU’s student judicial council.

But, really, is that how it has to be? Turf wars on O’Kelly-Riddick’s artificial grass? Seriously?

As good as Sound Machine is, as beautiful as those band members play, and, just like that, feelings of disrespect can make it all very ugly.

“If that’s what we need to do to have a band, then we won’t have a band,” NCCU Chancellor Charlie Nelms declared.

“The Sound Machine is not an entity unto itself,” Nelms said. “When you put on that uniform, you cease to be an individual student. You’re operating as an ambassador for the university.”

But this is the mighty Sound Machine! The band in January went to California and marched in the Rose Bowl parade. Besides, Savannah State’s football players started the whole mess by walking in front of band members getting ready to perform.

“It’s immaterial who started the fight,” Nelms said. “The issue is, it could have escalated.”

To be fair to the Sound Machine, all of us act like fools every now and then. When you’re in a situation, when you’re in the moment, it’s not hard to lose it like that.

But the real sick thing that night was hearing folks in the stands on the home side of the stadium essentially encouraging the youngsters in the Sound Machine to whup some tail. It felt like the Colosseum, where gladiators went upside each other’s heads.

You know how those conservatives cheered Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s views on the death penalty? It was like that but with absolutely no room for justification.

In fact, it was worse, because, unlike the Sound Machine, the armchair cheerleaders in the stands were not directly in the situation. They were just voyeurs getting their kicks off the kids on the field. Barbarians!

The week prior to the Savannah State game, when NCCU played Elon, a couple of members from the group formerly known as New Edition showed up at O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium, where Nelms was among those recognizing them as honorary NCCU Eagles.

The Sound Machine covers a bunch of songs, but one they really nail is New Edition’s “Can You Stand the Rain,” a song about taking the bitter with the sweet. The Sound Machine played that tune Saturday — after the fight.

No doubt, we all could do a better job applying the words that go with that particular piece of sheet music.

The incident was not that major... I was there, had a great view, it was one of the SSU football coaches fault. One coach told the football players to go around the band, ANOTHER coach said "No we going this way" and went through the band  nono2. The SSU head coach apologized to the NCCU Band Director.  clap

The chancellor over reacted, as he does sometimes... His emotions got the best of him also  tiptoe but I shall not speak directly on that...

We are in prayer each and every day, that the NCCU Administration does the right thing regarding our students, faculty and Staff of its Marching Band. We further pray that the NCCU administration extends its full support for the future growth and development of the NCCU Marching Sound Machine.

This Period and Time via the current Economic "Downturns" within the The World, The USA, The State of North Carolina and NC Central University, is indeed a time that try men's souls, in this time of financial crisis, regarding the NCCU Marching Sound Machine.

"We March By Faith and Not By Sight"!

Thank You The Sloping Hills and Verdent Green, quenccu8, BlitzingEagle, 1775, 81alphaeagle and Eagle Pride for your Love and Support of the NCCU Marching Sound Machine.

Take Care!

This is nothing but Black self hate, ghetto stuff: So, you can dance a jig, cakewalk etc. This band stuff is not that big of a deal--it has not helped black folks bottom line. Personally, I think these bands practicing until 1:00 am in the morning is just ridiculous. Why, they are in school to study and learn.  See self-hate, undignified behavior at its best here:

JSU kids really need to get away from Mississippi and get a little culture.

Why did Nelms blame the band members?  If I saw big football players heading my way, I would have reacted to.  There are females in our band and maybe they were protecting them.  SSU football team showed a lack of class.

Yes they could have...but to start an altercation over these issues are dumb.

Bands have these "don't cut your ranks crap" this is why I really respect Mr. Brown @ Shaw. He didn't tolerate that mess, let them cut. Its not worth putting thousands of dollars of instruments in harms way...fighting and embarrassing your program/school, or the real reality we are in a world of crazy folks. You don't know what they can do.

These bands need to stop this nonsense, if they wanna walk through the band...fine let them go, it isn't that serious and the Chancellor saw it that way.
