The NCCU Sound Machine lined up to do their pre-game at the designated time of 5:35 PM.  The SSU football team was in or near the endzone.  The band was about 25% on the field of play.  The SSU football finally decided to leave the field.  Instead of going down the sideline and behind the band the football players tried to run through the band.  The football players bumped some of the band members and the band reacted to them trying to go through their formation.  An altercation ensued which required security, band directors, and administrators to come out to the field.

NCCU Chancellor, Dr. Nelms, was furious at the band members who retaliated.   One of the drum majors and a drummer were removed from the field by Dr. Nelms.  All of this could have been avoided if the football team had gone behind the band or down the middle of the field in front of the band.

You Eagles pulled the same mess when yall came to Bowman Gray in 2009.  The announcer asked both teams over the PA System to exit the field for the Band and refused to leave.

What goes around, comes around.

Bad business by SSU and NCCU.

Why did Nelms blame the band members?  If I saw big football players heading my way, I would have reacted to.  There are females in our band and maybe they were protecting them.  SSU football team showed a lack of class.

I find it hard to take sides with the band on this.  SSU provoked and the band members reacted.  Dr Nelms disciplining those members was a way to suggest "use your brain instead of your fist".

EP, you should be smarter as well.

Maybe Dr. Nelms thought the band members should not have retaliated.   I don't know who pushed or shoved first.   The football team was wrong for running through the band.  They could have easily gone behind or in front of the band.

That statement does not make any sense whatsoever.  Please explain and proof read your response.

Yes I was at the game.

Just because SSU was wrong, does the band have to be wrong as well?

Did you not read why I believe Dr. Nelms removed those band members?

Yes I read that very weak argument.  It is easy to say that when you were up in the stands.  Why would football players run through a band knowing that they could knock down a female? shrug  Our band students acted in defense and got punished.  I guess our administration would prefer that someone in the band would have gotten knocked out by those huge football players. Yes,  the SSU players were wrong for going through the band.  But did you see who pushed whom first?  Was it a male or a female?   You know band members take exception to anyone breaking their ranks.  I agree with M&G in saying that Dr. Nelms probably said the bands should have used their brains instead of their fists.

If I had my platoon standing at parade rest in the same spot the band was...what would the football team have done?

as a former HBCU Band Member....the BAND reaction had nothing to do with safety and protection of its female members...

This was soley on the basis of you better not cut through our line.....this is an HBCU standard and the band typically acted  like any other HBCU band would have acted....the Band just got caught and caused an ugly public scene. Was SSU  wrong maybe or maybe not; if NCCU was not in formation and just standing around in various groups then SSU football team just ran through the  a groupd of band students as they were standing around. The smart thing to do, would have been for the band to assemble themselves to the side so that team could exit.
