The SEC has for years pimped and enslaved black athletes.  I cannot understand for the love of me, why is it that southern blacks, or blacks in general so embrace these institutions that through hell and high water tried to ensure that we could not even attend them.  I have to agree with the author, and I have said it before on this board, that many of us still employ a slave like mentality when it come to such topics.  Because of that, we will always be behind as a race.

I will never understand why a black kid would go to LSU to play ball.

GK,

well and strongly stated.  I completely agree.  I do think however, that many HBCU attenders still fall into the first generation college student category.  Unfortunately, with the rise in prices for everyday living, and you complicate it with a family and children who have needs, I am unsure of whether many African Americans are at that point to where philanthropy could be considered without penalty of sacrificing somewhere.  At white schools many of their alum don't give either.  Many do give, and ofcourse they have families on top of families with wealth and influence that have given and given throughout the years.  I hear that Morehouse and Spelman alum give exponentially in numbers and gifts.  But I am sure that their giving would not compare to the giving at a Dartmouth, Mercer, UGA, or even Ga. Southern.  Many Morehiouse and Spelman alum are well paid and very successful in their trades, but most had to take out loans for education, homes, vehicles, children's education, and the likes.  Compare that to someone whose parents could afford their private school education, and then even be able to afford their graduate and/or professional school education, as well.  Most of these individuals, the latter group, start very good jobs with no debt and/or responsibility.  It would be easier for them to build wealth, and their potential to give would be significantly higher as well.  But I get your point, giving is giving.  If all I can give is so much per year, then dig deep and give.  I agree with that.  But it's the how far I gotta dig, that most African American's deal with.  Coupled with the fact that African Americans are going to make giving to their religious institutions (church) more of a prioritiy than giving to any institution of higher learning.

if schools continue to recycle ADs and promote coaches who have no business sense to be ADs then maybe.

we gotta stop hiring people who "understand how HBCUs work" and hire ADs who "understand who buisness and athletics work together"

Agree on sentence one.  Disagree on two. You gotta have both. If one does NOT understand, they will fail.  Name one who hasn't.

I don't know. I think there is some pimping going on with HBCUs--only we don't have the "pimp" gifts to hand out. Heck, many of our schools don't even have the juice to find a kid a $6.00 per/hour summer job. Oh well...

They are choosing D1 PWCs because they have a better chance to make it to the NFL, NBA, or MLB.
