I absolutely agree.  We all have our favorite HBCU's and can joke about preferences and rivalries.  However, I prefer that an African-American child go to ANY (even A&T)(you know that I had to get that in there Grin) HBCU rather than another type of institution.  They will find that they have made the greatest decision of their life when they do.  Also they will develop relationships that will last forever.

Damn Que lol

I agree with you guys....FVSU has preview days throughout the year...they are well organized and do a great job of promoting FVSU nod

I've taken my church kids on college tours for the past couple of years.  They really liked Tennessee State and Fisk, but they said it was too far from home shrug

I've offered to take kids to Albany State, Tuskegee, BCU, and Hampton because they wanted to see the schools, but they always ended up having to do something else or it conflicted with my schedule, or they ended up going with the school (this happens most often with Albany State).  I always talk about HBCU's and am willing to take them to whichever one they want to check out.....I'll even go as far Howard or Texas Southern if they want me to.  I'll rent the car and buy the gas.

I want to take them to the AU Center and a tour of MLK Center this Spring.  People take for granted that these kids have seen this stuff because they live an hour and a half away, but they haven't.

One thing I appreciated about my parents and my uncles...when we traveled in or through a town with an HBCU, they made it a point to at least drive by the school and show it to us. nod  Maybe that is why I am willing to expose kids to them...

I also have to schedule trips to FAMU and Valdosta State.    If it were up to me they would only go on HBCU tours, but I recognize that they need the opportunity to look at all schools.  I really push the HBCU's but I've never said anything bad about the PWC's that we've visited and I never will.

Now add Tuskegee to your list of travel and I will pay for your trip........foreal nod

I agree 100% all of my family that's got a college degree it is from a HBCU and it is atleast 16 of them starting with my mom, Tuskegee Institute, and my dad Arkansas AM&N now Pine Bluff. and they are all so connected to their school...

Ok well there are 2 many quotes about me to put them all on there blogs so ill start so Ill aim at one person then I will go from there

@Que82 GO F#$K YOURSELF

AHH I FEEL BETTER ALREADY

To the rest ..... This is the way I and others who went to many of the institutions that are represented on this board felt ..... Like I said there are alot of things that you folks who haven't attended an HBCU in 20 years don't know because the schools have changed since you graced there hollowed halls....  and im not saying pwc's are better because they have problems too ....WHAT IM SAYING IS THERE ARE PROBLEMS THAT AS A PARENT I DONT WANT TO DEAL WITH WHEN PAYING MONEY FOR MY CHILD TO GO TO AN HBCU....

I never said I didnt have FUN at WSSU!!, I NEVER SAID I DIDNT MAKE LIFELONG FRIENDS, I DIDNT SAY I DIDNT HAVE MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES!!

Whats funny about dealing with alot of you folks are you are so pro-HBCU that you dont even want to hear that maybe some of the practices that are going on at ALL these schools may be a little outdated .... Instead of Haranguing me on issues that i experienced and that students at ALL your schools experience, why not ask well how can it get better? what should we do? what are some ideas ? but no im asked to sit on a grenade with all the other nostalgics jumping on the bandwagon...

You guys can fool yourselves all you want acting as if none of these schools have problems or that the HBCU experience is the best experience in the world but im sorry to say its not (at least not anymore) .....but this is the same crowd who constantly asks .....Why arent we attracting the best and brightest ?..... Why dont the best athletes want to come here? ..... Whats goin on at such and such institution?

When you guys are ready im more then willing to have real dialogue with anyone who wants it.

And to the person who asked why didnt I just transfer .... because I wanted to make a change in my University and all HBCU's in general and it would be foolish to try and fight that battle by being an outsider.

PWC have big problems too but the press don't print it like they do to a HBCU school. the only reason a pwc wand a black kid is they are an athlete or very smart, they don't want the average black student, but the HBCU's want them  to mold them into being great americans. and one day they can maybe be President of the institution that they attended. do you ever think in your lifetime you will ever see a black being the President of Duke or any other pwc..

Ok Que82 ...you have nothing to add so im just not gonna pay any attention to you

@TigerJohn you are correct PWC's do have problems but im not talking about there problems im talking about ours ... I havent put one PWC above any HBCU.... All im saying is we need to do better

And why is that a problem that a PWC wants the best african american athlete or best thinker ....We should want the same things but the real question is what are we doing to get them ... Now dont get me wrong alot of very intelligent african americans still go to HBCU's as we speak .... but we still arent geting the best of the best when we can ..

And yes I do think you will see a Black President at Duke in my lifetime ....I saw A Black POTUS some im pretty sure Duke can happen..... and all this molding the average student into a great american is bull most colleges dont even do that HBCU and PWC alike

He beat me to it.....I was just wondering the same thing. Why come here and down the very school that you attended? The family is waiting for the football schedules to go out because we are going to be attending some games. It is the highlight of the year and we have indoctrinated the children in all ways of HBCU life. Even the unborn one due in June is headed to a HBCU...I am looking for a HBCU onesie and receiving blanket as we speak !
I wear HBCU gear proudly! Always have and always will....

I am 57 years old and I have never had on any gear from any pwc and never will. how many white people in your lfetime have you seen with any ASU gear on. and if they got it on they have a child that plays sports there. I've got a collection of HBCU stuff from atleast twenty schools, I even got a Morris Brown cap. I see you are a true HBCU man from the heart, and send the little one to TU ok.................................... tiptoe

TJ, my daughter is going there and she will fight anyone who says otherwise ! Hopefully, my son will follow in the footsteps of his father and grandfather and attend that lovely school by the river in Albany GA.
I have even told my wife to buy me a nice TU shirt....after all I showed up at TU's homecoming with an Albany State jersey on and didn't flinch...so I can wear something different and represent the HBCU love. Believe it or not, we have a growing white population who will represent Albany State proudly.

VG, a very wise man (my father) told me once....give her what she wants if you can.  Grin

RamMan4Life when scripture says "be fruitful and multiply" it wasn't talking about you by yourself. lol  Congratulations

Que82,this is the last one...I am also planning to do a tour myself next year with a small group of young men if I can raise the money. I want to start with 2-3 to begin with and take them on a circuit of HBCUs. I am thinking about the following: Bethune Cookman, FAMU, Edward Waters, Albany State, Fort Valley, Tuskegee and Savannah State. I may have to whittle the list down to a smaller number. We have a lot of students here who are not aware of HBCUs period

Since you clearly haven't come up with any solutions, based on your posted thots here, you are certainly part of the problem. If you don't see the need for your kids or your friends' kids to attend your alma mater (or any other HBCU for that matter) to ensure its viability, then even as an insider you are doing nothing significant to affect change so what's your point?  shrug

I say the more we expose our youth to our hbcu's, then the better. I'm all for them going wherever they can afford to go. Lets be real, money talks and pays tuition. If they choose something other than an hbcu, thats fine, so long as I know I've done my part to enlighten them on our schools.

Y'all law off BigRams or whatever his name is. He is entitled to his opinion. We don't have to like it, and I don't. It doesn't really change anything.  no
