Looks like its time for a new roof on Tompkins Hall.  Though many of the older buildings at TU have gotten the red corrogated metal roofing as a part of their renovations recently (something I have mixed feelings about), I hope they don't go that route on Tomkins.  That red corrogated metal would look horrid in contrast to the dome that is on top of Tompkins.

I hope its just a new roof that's needed and not something more.

The red doesn't look bad and you're right it shouldn't be done to Tompkins Hall.

This type would have looked much better than red corrogated matal roofing.

Maybe they can turn Tompkins Hall later down the road into some other use building like a theater or something and build a brand new modern cafeteria and student center some place else on campus.

Interesting idea.  Would take mucho moolah though.  Either that, or completely renovate Tompkins with modernization into a brand new dining facility and student center (probably more likely.  I'm not sure where on campus they'd build a new building that would be sufficiently centralized for that type of building).

I was in school in '89 when they finished renovations of the union downstairs.  I've gone down there recently, and it suffices to say that it's time for a makeover.

How does Tuskegee's current student union compare to other college's newer student unions?

Most Educational Facilities are going with "Food Court" type eating areas.

Probably not very favorably.  Like I said it's time for a makeover.  And we need to do it because these types of amenities are the things that potential students are looking to have.

What would you like to see Tompkins Hall turned into should they ever relocated the main cafeteria and student union out of the building?

There was a case back in 1982 where they had to do some emergency work on Tompkins roof.  Like a lot of buildings built at the turn of the 20th Century, Tompkins wasn't built with any steel beams.  The wood beams that supported the roof and the dome had warped to the point where it was in danger of collapsing.  They had to cut holes in the roof and install steel beams to replace the old warped wooden beams.

Wonder what the current structural roof issue is this time. That is a very old building.
