The Virginia history textbook that raised eyebrows when it claimed that large numbers of black soldiers fought for the South during the Civil War is under scrutiny again, after a review of the book found dozens of errors that historians call disturbing.

Among the mistakes: the claim that 12 states joined the Confederacy, not 11, and that 6,000 soldiers died during the Battle of Bull Run during the Civil War, instead of 22,000. Three of the five historians who reviewed "Our Virginia: Past and Present" at the request of the state board of education said they were appalled."I absolutely could not believe the number of mistakes -- wrong dates and wrong facts everywhere. How in the world did these books get approved?" Ronald Heinemann, a former history professor at Hampden-Sydney College, told The Washington Post.

The textbook, published by Five Ponds Press, was not written by a trained historian. The Virginia board of education ordered a small panel of historians to review the fourth-grade textbook earlier this year when experts challenged its claim that thousands of blacks fought for the Confederacy.

Five Ponds Press said it planned to incorporate the edits into the text's next edition. "Most of the items you reference have been identified, and we sent a notice a week ago to the Virginia Department of Education with our intent to make these edits in the book's next printing," Lou Scolnik, Five Ponds Press' owner, told the Post.

Virginia education officials will meet Jan. 10 to discuss the panel's work. "The findings of these historians have certainly underscored and added urgency to the need to address the weaknesses in our system so we don't have glaring historical errors in our books," Charles Pyle, a spokesman for Virginia's Department of Education, told the paper.

81alphaeagle, you are one big liar.  my governor never allowed any text book errors in history.  his name does not even appear in the link you posted.

maybe your lying butt can explain how seven of the nine members on the virginia board of education were appointed by democratic governors.  the board of education has taken care of this.  teachers will get the information needed to correct the civil war errors next week when they go back to school.

is lying what they teach at nccu.

There are errors in all textbooks. You can make money if you find the mistakes and be the first the bring it to the attention to the publishers.

using your logic you must agree that the economy is obama's fault.  he is the president and leader of this country.  it is all his fault.

since you are a liar, the truth is seven out of nine of the members on the vboe were appointed by democratic governors.  some were even reappointed by democratic governors.  another truth is my governor inherited the school board.  that is why the vboe is now correcting all those errors.  not only in the history book.  they are correcting errors in all the textbooks.

too bad you have no clue how this fly by night company wound up printing all those erroneous textbooks.

where did mcdonnell say we needed this fly by night company to print books for our students to improve their education.  where have i ever said mcdonnell inherited anything.  this textbook problem came up after the school year started.  the vboe has made changes.  they will meet again later this month.

your title to this thread is an outright lie.  you lied again when you said i blamed this mess on obama since he got elected.

highlander,
Review y04's "cheap shot" thread titles and get back to me.
THAT's why I said what I said.

I hope you do NOT think I am taking y04's nonsense seriously.

With what is happening in Texas and this, a part of me is saying that this is intentional.  It may not be an accident.  It reminds me of two sayings:  1.  He (or she) who forgets his (or her) history is doomed to repeat it and 2. Those Who Control the Past Control the Future.
