Neseer Odeh, store manager for the Stop 'n Go Exxon station on Ploof Road in Leland was issued a citation for the flag flying at the station, which Odeh said measures 8 by 11 feet and is attached to a 60-foot pole.
The owner of an attention-grabbing American flag outside the Stop ‘n Go Exxon station on Ploof Road in Leland wants to work out an arrangement with town officials to keep it flying.
Despite a codes violation citation issued by the town, store manager Neseer Odeh said Friday the flag stays put. Meanwhile, fines of up to $50 a day are piling up, Mayor Walter Futch said.
Odeh said Stop ‘n Go owner Kalid Saleh doesn't want any trouble with the town, which also cited the business for not removing banners covering signs on the property in a timely fashion.
“He doesn't want to go against the city. He wants to work with the city,” Odeh said. “(But) the people are behind us, and we're not going to take the flag down. We love the flag.”
Odeh and Saleh are both natives of Jordan who have lived in the United State for decades. Both are naturalized U.S. citizens. Saleh flies the flag as a patriotic gesture, not as an advertising tool, Odeh said.
“He always puts a flag up in appreciation of the U.S.,” Odeh said.
Saleh flies oversize American flags outside more than 30 gas stations/convenience stores he owns in North Carolina, including an even bigger version of Old Glory at a gas station on North College Road in Wilmington.
