Leap Day match to benefit flood victims, details still being finalized

AMSTERDAM — The US national team will be making a quick return to Europe for a great cause when they visit Italy in Genoa on Feb. 29, MLSsoccer.com has learned.

Multiple sources in Italy confirmed that the Nats will clash with the Azzurri to benefit victims of November's deadly flooding in Genoa just three months and change after winning at Slovenia. Details of the charity action are not yet known, but one source indicated that US coach Jurgen Klinsmann accepted a specific invitation for his team to take part in the event.

Columbus' Bliss to assist US Under-20 coaching staff
Crew TD will help Ramos prep squad during Ft. Lauderdale camp

Columbus Crew technical director Brian Bliss will assist head coach Tab Ramos during the US Under-20 national team's camp, US Soccer confirmed on Wednesday. The U-20s are spending a week in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., in preparation for CONCACAF qualifying for the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey.

Bliss hasn't been named to the staff, said a USSF spokesman, but will serve as a guest assistant to Ramos for a few days ahead of the MLS Combine, which starts Friday and runs through Jan. 11. Bliss is still fulfilling his role as Crew TD and will rejoin Columbus' coaching staff at the Combine.

It seems US head coach Jurgen Klinsmann will get his second taste of the heated rivalry against Mexico in an exhibition match to be played this August. The venue? Estadio Azteca. Can Klinsmann finally lead the Americans through the humid, smoggy, and raucous atmosphere to their first-ever victory south of the border? (Goal.com - Jan. 14, 2012)

According to their federation's own calendar, the Brazilian national team will play both the United States and Mexico during their summer swing. The four-time World Champs are slated to play Argentina at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on June 9. According to this link, they'll face the USMNT a week earlier in either Washington or Boston, and El Tri in Dallas. (cbf.com.br - Jan. 12, 2012)

Recap:
Clark's late header gives US 1-0 win over Venezuela
Substitute makes no mistake in stoppage time for dramatic win

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Time after time, chance after chance, the US national team pushed hard for a possible winning goal against Venezuela, only to be turned away.

Then, a foul put more time on the stoppage-time clock in the second half, and the US took advantage. Jermaine Jones’ corner kick found Ricardo Clark’s head, and Clark beat Venezuela goalkeeper Jose Morales in the eighth minute of extra time.

The final whistle sounded just seconds later, and the US celebrated a 1-0 victory before 22,403 at University of Phoenix Stadium.

US U-23s close January camp with win at Alajuelense

Taylor's goal gives Olympic hopefuls a 1-0 victory in Costa Rica

The United States U-23 national team closed out the second leg of training camp ahead of Olympic qualifying on a high note, defeating an Alajuelense concoction of first-teamers and reserves 1-0 on Tuesday afternoon in Alajuela, Costa Rica.

Forward Tony Taylor was lone goal scorer, finding the net in the 39th minute after a good build-up from the young Americans.

“We pressured them and did everything we could to win,” Taylor told the Costa Rican club’s website after the match. http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2012/01/24/us-u-23s-close-january-camp-win-alajuelense

Rumor Central:
Canada to host US in WCQ tuneup?

The Canadian Soccer Association is set to make a few big announcements on Thursday, but who saw this one coming?

Rumors are that the CSA will not only announce the sites for Canada's World Cup Qualifying matches on Thursday, but it appears they'll also drop the news that Canada will host the US sometime in a friendly tuneup before the qualifiers. The US - who beat Canada in Detroit during the group stage of the CONCACAF Gold Cup last summer - have not played in Canada since a 3-0 win in Vancouver in 1997.

The Canucks lead the series 6-3-1 in matches played in Canada all-time, dating back to 1925. (CBC Sports - Canada to face US in World Cup qualifier tuneup http://www.cbc.ca/sports/soccer/opinion/2012/02/canada-to-face-us-in-world-cup-qualifer-tuneup.html)

US to face rivals Canada in Toronto friendly on June 3

The match, which will be televised live in the US on NBC Sports Network at 7 pm ET, will also serve as the final tune-up for both squads ahead of the third round of CONCACAF qualifying for the 2014 World Cup.

“First of all, we are honored to be chosen to be part of Canada's Centenary celebration,” US head coach Jurgen Klinsmann said in a statement. “This is exactly the type of challenge we are looking for as we grow the team and get ready for the start of World Cup qualifying. There is a great history in the rivalry, and Canada is a team we could see in the final round of qualifying. It's a win-win for everybody.”
