Im glad to hear that so many historically Black HSs are still in operation and that North Carolina is up to 6.  Instead of opening brand new HSs to ease overcrowding they should re-open some of these HSs and simply add on to the buildings.  Its alot cheaper.  Back in Fayetteville, the overcrowding of Jack Britt and 71st could be solved if they simply re-opened Anne Chestnut as a HS.  It makes no sense to have 2 middle schools directly across the street from each other. smh

These schools have a lot of history but we must insure that their futures are bright as well.  Many of our schools in NC were on Judge Manning's closure list.  We need to insure the success of our students and schools.

Parker High School in Birmingham

A.H. Parker High School opened in 1900 as Negro High School then Industrial High School as the first high school for African American in Birmingham when John Herbert Phillips was superintendent.
Parker High School was once the largest African American high school in the United States with 3,700 students.

JROB, you are so right.  I can not speak for the other Black schools in NC but when Judge Manning made that threat, our alumni and principal (Rene' Corders/NCCU alum) stepped up by implimenting great solutions and mentoring.  E. E. Smith has continued to improve their test scores and has an awesome young principal (Del. State alum/former marine) who is insuring the school's continued success.  When E. E. Smith plays Hillside in Durham this fall, I will definately be there.

I don't know If I'm up on my DMV history, but I DO know that

Anacostia, Ballou, Dunbar, and Spingarn in DC

Fairmont Heights and Frederick Douglass in Prince George's County, MD

Dunbar in Baltimore.

TC Williams in Alexandria, VA

Only Dunbar  and Armstrong high school in DC were all-Black. I've meet white graduates of Anacostia. NPR Diane Rehm went to Roosevelt. TC Williams graduated its first class in 1967. The school was opened after Alexandria's Negro High school  Parker-Gray was closed.

Thanks for the corrections.  I was lunchin when I put TC on the list. I know better. I forgot about Booker T in Norfolk, and Norcom in Portsmouth.

Shelt -

I'm not sure either, but I went there for first and second grades and it was 100% black.  It was originally part of the Jefferson County school system but was annexed into BHM City back in 70.

Yep, those merger schools got some serious issues.  My mom taught at JO and whan they built the new one, them fools from Ensley were straight up tearing stuff up because the sign out front said JO and not Ensley.  I'm hearing similar about Wenonah too.  My bro and sis went to Jones Valley.  When I do make it back tothe hood, the cats there all complain about having to go to HS with the West End and Wenonah kids - bitter rivalries from grade school that still exist today....

Is Wenonah still a high school? What about Jackson-Olin nee Western-Olin??

Yep both are still in operation.  New buildings, but still open for business.

Jacksonville (FL)- William M. Raines High School

What happened to Ribault and Jackson?

They, along with Raines, were part of the "Big Three" when I lived in Jacksonville.

The Raines vs. Ribault rivalries were INTENSE!

In Jackson, Mississippi:

Lanier High School

Jim Hill High School

Those were the 2 "historically black" high schools in Jackson, pre-desegregation. Post-desegregation, Lanier and Jim Hill remained mostly black, but Callaway, Murrah and Provine started to get more blacks.

By the time I graduated from high school in 89, Callaway was 100% black (compared to about 60% in 1981 when my brother finished and about 40% in 1977 when my sister finished). Provine was 99.9% black and Murrah was about 70% black.

NOW, all of the high schools in Jackson are 90%+ black due to people just plain moving out of the city and into the county (Hinds) and adjacent counties (Madison and Rankin).

Are there any left in your state?  I did a research paper in the 10th grade during Black History Month on Black schools in North Carolina during segregation.  I found out there was at least 1 Black HS in every county of the state but there are only 4 remaining.  I would say 5 but Im not sure if Carver in Winston Salem is historically black.

Carver still is a majority black school and Atkins here in Winston-Salem.

I met someone recently who is a graduate of Southern University Lab HS.  If I'm not mistaken, Grambling State University has a HS on campus, too.  I think its called Grambling Lab.
