Full story

Former H.D. Woodson assistant Natalie Randolph has been named the head football coach at Coolidge, making her what is believed to be the first female head football coach in the D.C. area.

In Natalie Randolph's first season as wide receivers coach at H.D. Woodson High School in the District a few years ago, one of the most difficult moments each week came at the end of the game when the two teams lined up for their traditional handshake.

"I hate shaking hands," she said at the time, "because they walk right past me and don't realize I'm a coach."

Randolph has been dealing with slights like that ever since she fell in love with football, a passion that led to a five-year career as a wide receiver for the D.C. Divas of the women's professional football league and a two-year stint as a varsity assistant at Woodson.

Now the 29-year-old science teacher is putting herself on the line again.

On Friday, Randolph is scheduled to be formally named the head football coach at Coolidge High School in Northwest Washington, making her what is believed to be the only woman coaching boys' varsity high school football in the United States.

The appointment, which Randolph confirmed in a brief telephone conversation Tuesday, was applauded by some of her peers in the coaching profession. It also prompted a modest amount of predictable sniping in anonymous comments on an online version of this story that a woman is unfit to be coaching a sport long dominated by boys.

"Some people say she's just a woman and she doesn't know anything. There's definitely going to be a higher level of scrutiny because it's a woman in a man's world," said Toni Morgan, a referee for the Eastern Board of Officials and a regular official of football games in the D.C. Interscholastic Athletic Association.

Said one D.C. high school football coach: "All I know is, I don't want to be the first one to lose to her. That's going to be wild."

As long as they aren't doing it as a novelty I see nothing wrong with it. Heck, I wouldn't mind seeing Coach Bibbs take over the A&T mens squad.  nod

Bison....I can't understand why and how our public schools continue to be ignored at all levels of government.  In the DC metropolitan area the public school systems are the worst problem we have but NO ONE has done anything about it.  This is a minor issue compared to some that are much larger but this is still a shame IMO.

Coolidge class of 91, I didn't even know they needed a coach.  There was some underachieving or disappointing end to seasons but they were competitive.

There was a female coach at the parks in my hometown that won the championsip with an undefeated team that had one of the best defenses in the city and she was the DC.  She got started by stealing her brother play book and studying game films with him and she has a great knowledge of the game.  Coaching is not solely based on one's ability to play the game, but on one's ability to understand and teach the game.

It is my understanding that one of the best coaches in FVSU history never ever play football. Shocked Iknow that I never play pro football, but I have had a chance to talk to some head football coaches at the college level and pro level and they were all impressed with my knowledge of the game.  Until you give that person a chance you will never know what they can do. This person does have an advantage that most women may not have she was a football player.  Although it was in the women league she did play and we do not know what knowledge she gained from that. In fact, I recalled reading a story about a player in the NFL who stated that best coach he ever had was his mother who play Linebacker in a women football league.

I say all this to say Let us give her a chance to see what she can do. If she wins a chanpionship one day what will you say then. shrug nod

The movie Wildcats?

Football...............................It's the sport of kings, better than diamond rings, football, wildcats, football, wildcats!    lol    Goldie Hawn was good in this movie, that showcased young Wesley Snipes, and Mykelti Williamson.
