Is this the Ed O'Bannon case? I think they are going to win and effectively end amateurism in basketball and football. And it's about time.
How so? The nexus of this case is whether or not the NCAA can license companies like EA Sports to use the likenesses of former collegiate athletes.
According to some sources (CNNSI); when the NCAA is forced to open it's books, it may have broader implications. Also on the line are other forms of media; like the championship videos created by SI.
Since the NCAA is a org with members who collectively decide not to pay amateur athletes, while the members make money; they are violating anti-trust laws. In laymen's terms, the NCAA members are operating as a cartel.
Since a precedent has already been set by retired NFL players, it will be difficult to argue anything other than "We withheld money because they were amateur athletes". Once that argument is introduced, then amateurism will come under attack.
