JOURNAL REPORTER

Published: March 11, 2010

Quarterback Jamie DeGeare is transferring from Appalachian State to Winston-Salem State in search of more playing time.

DeGeare (6-0, 215) never played in a game for the Mountaineers and in three seasons in Boone spent most of his time on the scout team. A 2007 graduate of Glenn High, he passed for more than 2,000 yards and 21 touchdowns as a senior there.

"I'm really excited about this," DeGeare said yesterday. "I've been to some of the spring practices when I was visiting over there, and the new coaches are really serious about changing the program around."

DeGeare sat out 2007 as a redshirt, then hurt his knee in 2008 and sat out again. Last season, he was moved to tight end in the fall, but didn't like that move and decided to leave the team soon after camp opened.

"The bottom line is Jamie wants to play, and Winston-Salem State will be a good fit," said Brian DeGeare, Jamie's father. "He had talked with (Coach Connell Maynor) when he was at Fayetteville State, and when he came to Winston-Salem State, they continued to talk."

The Rams, who were 1-10 last season, need help at quarterback. Four players competed for the spot in spring practice, which ended last week, and DeGeare is expected to be in the mix for the starting spot in the fall.

DeGeare will finish out the current semester at Appalachian State then enroll at WSSU for the fall semester. He said his grade-point average is close to 3.0 and that he's majoring in criminal justice.

A big factor in DeGeare's choosing WSSU is that he will be eligible to play immediately because WSSU (Division II) is in a lower division than Appalachian (FCS).

"He didn't want to have to sit out again," Brian DeGeare said.

DeGeare will have three years of eligibility left and could petition the NCAA for another year.

The Rams have had success in past years with quarterbacks from area high schools. Tory Woodbury (Glenn), Josh McGee (West Forsyth) and Monte Purvis (Parkland) all ended their careers ranked among the top 10 passers in WSSU history.

"I'm aware of Tory Woodbury and what he was able to do there," said DeGeare, who will turn 21 in July. "I know that for myself, it will be nice to get back on the field, and my friends and family can come see me play. I'm just anxious to get back on the field and see what I can do."

DeGeare's older brother, Chris, played on the offensive lineman at Wake Forest and is expected to be selected in next month's NFL Draft.

Why did he wait so long? Must be losing the job in spring ball. Sounds like a good pick up though

DAM, Winston has about 50 quarterbacks on the roster; I'm still trying to figure out how they are going to get down to 36 scholarships signing all these players and still having many of the ones on the roster from the last years team and then not to mention who ever they had walking around campus that was not eligible last year; this is going to be interesting!

not sure how they figure he has 3 yrs. of eligibility. he has been there for 3 years which is 6 semesters that leaves 4 semesters to play which would give you the 10 semesters allowed by NCAA

I am glad that this young man realize that he can leave a pwc where he would not play and transfer to an HBCU to get the chance to play quaterback. you got these dumb a-- athletes at Alabama and Auburn who would rather sit on the bench and play 3rd and 4th string than go to an HBCU and play, gust to say the went to those schools

GENERALLY....You go fulltime in the fall.....part time in the spring...then summer school ...that will get u to drag out the terms of attendance rule...the only challenge with part time in the spring is that you can't TYPICALLY participate in spring ball because you are not full time....but if he is a baller...I am sure the coach may make an exception to him having to participate in the spring...lol
