Good morning Onnidan fam!  I have a nephew graduating from hs in June.  He is interested in computer engineering (software design) and made a 930 on SAT with a 3.25 GPA and plays in the band.  He has applied with a number of colleges last year but yet to hear any responses.  He once said he wanted to attend FVSU then in the past year or so changed his mind.  Naturally he is getting agitated as he is ready to leave his environment and go off to college and as reconsidered the FVSU.  I told him and my sis I will do what I can on my end but not coming from an engineering background I'm contacting others to get some info as soon as possible.  I thought I'd expand my search and ask if anyone hear has any beneficial info that I could pass on.  Thanks in advance!

Maybe Brother Tony will have some insight. I'm not sure what most engineering programs require but I do know they require more than the other colleges at a school. 3.25,  shrug Most competitive schools want you to have  at least a 3.0 for general admissions. I don't know if that is good enough to get into most engineering programs?

Sabbath have you told him about CDEP? Unless the requirement has changed he can major in Comp Sci and be in the program..

Wish I could help more...Go online or contact the admissions offices at HBCU's with engineering programs and see what they say..

I did mention that to him and gave my sister the number last night to contact them for a visit.  I also told her to get more info on CDEP.

Well Cholly, I didn't talk to him since January but he seems to really want to go to an HBCU with an engineering program.  His guidance counselor has been trying to get him to focus on Clemson but he doesn't seem to want to stay in SC.  I'll call him and try to help him out as much as possible.  Just found out they don't have a PC so now I'm trying to get as much info as I can.  Thanks everybody!

I just saw that on college search.  I will send him the information I found today.  I really don't want him to lose faith in his search VG, he's a good kid and was forced to abandon ALL his childhood friends because of the decisions they made.  I really admire his will to succeed.

That is good to hear...props to him for doing what it takes to get ahead, and Kudos to you for encouraging him and helping out.

I would love for him to come to Wildcat Country, but ultimately I want him to get what he wants/needs to get to a career he enjoys. I am pulling for this young man!

Sabbathchild,

If it is possible, have him take the SAT again to try to raise his score.  That will help.

Also There is a difference between Computer Engineering and Computer Science.

Computer Engineering combines Electronics Engineering with Computer Science, giving the student exposure into both the hardware design and software design aspects of Computer design.  Make sure that's what he really want's to do.  If he want's to focus in on Software design he should probably look into majoring in Computer Science.

One big difference in the two disciplines academically:

Computer Engineering will require a lot more math and courses, than computer science.  Just something to think about.

Also...

If he is indeed interested in Computer Engineering, please make sure the program he goes to is accredited by ABET.  Very important!

Let him know about our CDEP program; the only program of it's kind in the nation in which Ga Tech, University of Oklahoma, Penn State, University of Texas - Austin, and UNLV has partnered with us. Through CDEP he will get 2 degree's in 5 years. Plus there are scholarships available to go for free.

Also, remind him that FVSU has a new science building opening this fall, new football stadium, 7 new dorms, etc.

The link for our CDEP program: http://www.fvsu.edu/academics/cdep
