HERE ARE THE FACTS:

Big-time college athletics: Are they worth the big-time costshttp://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/2010-01-13-ncaa-athletics-subsidies_N.htm

Amid funding crisis, college athletics soak up subsidies, fees http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/2010-01-13-ncaa-athletics-funding-analysis_N.htm

What schools spend on athletics isn't always easy to calculate. But each year, the NCAA collects 36 revenue and expense items from each of its member schools' budget.
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/ncaa-finances.htm

College Athletics Database (DI-A), so you know what it is for D-IAA!
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/ncaa-finances.htm

Owning Bowman Gray Stadium and taking 100% of all concessions will not stop the money drain or help WSSU or any HBCU when it comes to DI sports. That is unless you can average 25,000 per football game and raise ticket prices to $30.00 a game.  Secondly, DII may help in the long run because you don't have to fully fund female sports with scholarships.

Question: What President or Chancellor in the SEC, ACC, Big 10 is out there raising money for sports? Question: What Chancellor or president in the CIAA, MEAC, SIAC is going around to businesses or corporations soliciting funds for athletics?

Answer to all of the above: Zero, none, nunca.

Harold Martin's "athletic pitch" was a general Capital Campaign and some of that money would be allocated for athletics. A one time deal--just to meet the basic DI requirements. After that WSSU, Chico and "Sports boosters" were going to have to fill the void with an annual committment in the millions.

Name calling aside, EVERYTHING ELSE IS "WOULDA, COULDA, SHOULDA, INUENDO, HYPERBOLE AND SPECULATION.

Dr. Reaves,

I didn't see you in DC yesterday, even though someone was kissing up to you in your absence.  Wink  I guess EVERYbody doesn't hate you.  I assure you that the Rams in the audience STILL were talking about the day of your departure from WSSU.  Some of these folks I didn't even know were paying attention to your act.   They are!  I even went to a BIRTHDAY PARTY Saturday night, and the Rams THERE were bad-mouthing you.  Not good my brotha!

All these articles have some truth to them but they mean nothing to WSSU in the big picture of things.  Those who didn't know, should NOW know that very few programs make money off sports.  Again, your lack of vision shows that you don't get the PR aspect of the athletics programs.  The athletics are a school's PR arm.
Your ascertations on needing $25K at $30 are way off base.  If that were the case, there would be NO schools in 1-AA.  What we need is an AD who can count too. We have that now.  That's the only thing you've done "right" in this mess, and HE fell into your lap.  Thanks FAM.  Or we need to drop sports altogether. In addition to being a quitter you also are selling our school, and others short!

PLEASE NOTE EVERYONE

Not ONE article said a school was dropping down in Division because of economic hardships.  They drop a program here, a program there, but not reclassify.
Ain't none of them said they are discontinuing athletics!!!!!!

Lastly, yesterday again pointed out the lack of publicity from the school about things going on that alumni should know.  How can you have a Grammy nominated choir go on tour-DURING THEIR SPRING BREAK NO LESS, and have to HOPE that some alumni find out and spread the word?  They've also been to Carnegie Hall twice in recent years, and almost NO ONE KNEW ABOUT IT!

This type of mindset is why you need to resign your position.  BTW, the choir director says that they RECRUIT students on the tour.  It is evident judging by the number of out-of-state students singing. But the BAND doesn't help with recruiting? Roll Eyes Get a grip. Leave WSSU when your boy Erskine leaves UNC!  BEFORE THAT IF POSSIBLE!! You are KILLING US!!!!

BTW, if you stayed off this website posting your side of the story, you could get something done.

One thing I forgot to say about your president question.  No they aren't doing that.  They have Sports Marketers and Athletics Development people to do that!  YOU are supposed to raise money for the other entities on campus.  I don't see where you've done THAT!

RESIGN!

It's your thing!

I also forgot, there were a WHOLE LOT of Rams at the CIAA.  I keep tell you and others that you can still go there!!

I spent part of last week connecting with RAMS from both sides of the track on the issue of moving to D-1. While listening to the extremes of the matter, I was able to hear what was happening in the middle ground. After a small amount of tweaking the conversation, it was clear that most of the WSSU Family support the RAMS all the way. The other thing they agreed on was their mutual disdain for Chancellor Reaves. Both sides agreed that he has done nothing to further the vision of the school, even in the area of academics.

No one can figure how he proposes to enhance the school’s financial status while suspending university fundraising initiatives. At the same time, he has not proposed any new initiatives, and, has done nothing in support of those by the alumni. He does not visit alumni chapters, even locally. He does not attend regional meetings. He even fell for a report that there is not significant advantage in exposure through athletics.

While I try to understand the opinions of others, it is beyond me what he has in mind. Having studied politics over the years, it is clear to me that he employed one of the oldest political ploys in existence: he studied the situation to death. In the process, he killed it through neglect. At the end of the study, he announced that it was not feasible because the resources were not available. During the period of neglect, no money was being raised for athletics. This allowed the coffers to be depleted to the point of a deficit. Now, all he had to do was put the numbers in place to support what he wanted in the first place.

I would be all for going backwards, if it were truly warranted. Not only was athletics deprived of much needed resources, the university was deprived of much needed resources. You see, in the process of killing athletics, he has crippled the university’s fundraising process. Several of the major companies have not been approached for gifts. A number of individuals have not been approached, because they are athletics and they will only give to athletics. What he forgets is that a number of us were not only students, we were athletes who were also honor students.

The only positive thing that has occurred is that he brought in Bill Hayes to help smooth things over. So far, that has helped to start that process. Unfortunately, the cancer is still in place. Dr. Reaves is still in charge. As long as he is there, we will not advance.

I would love to see RAM NATION band together and make change. I'd hate to see things slip any further. I live here and full support WSSU and I'd hate to see things not move forward in a positive way.

Point Of Reference:

Believe it or not many high school and junior college student athletes have a major desire to play "Division I" basketball.  I heard them use the terms in reference and as seniors leaving the program often have reverence to their head coach because if gave them an opportunity,d often times took a chance on them and provided them with an the chance to play at the NCAA's highest level (i.e. "DI Ball").
