Blacks keep getting fooled about initiatives due them, no matter the resident of the White House. Despite Black joblessness rates twice that of Whites, Benjamin Jealous of the NAACP; Marc Morial of the National Urban League; and the Rev. Al Sharpton of the National Action Network, emerged from a presidential meeting mouthing the "post-racial America" mantra.

Satisfied with the meeting, the head of the NAACP said, "In these times, it didn’t make sense to talk about race-based initiatives…When you’re on the ground, the poor Black community is the same as the poor White community."

It has to be.

What does Benjamin Jealous of the NAACP, Marc Morial of the National Urban League, and the Rev. Al Sharpton do with unemployment rates.

Did Obama meet with black business owners from "main street" and blacks leaders from labor unions and black college graduates etc?

Feb.2010 Unemployment rate

WHITE
Men, 20 years and over 9.0%
Women, 20 years and over 7.3%

Both sexes, 16 to 19 years 22.5

BLACK OR AFRICAN AMERICAN
15.8

Men, 20 years and over 17.8%
Women, 20 years and over 12.1%

Both sexes, 16 to 19 years 42.0

Obama is no different from any other President. Until you force them to make a decision then nothing will be done.

And what type of decision would you have him make? What specific action would you ask that he take?

I noted one thing about the unemployment rate. The ethnic groups that keep money in their own communities and keep their business in their own communities have the lowest unemployment rate, mainly Asians.  Maybe instead of meeting with BHO we should have a meeting among ourselves. The average mom and pop store in the black community makes $100,000 per year. Maybe instead of running to the Chinese carryout in our community on a Friday night, we could build our own "Chinese" Restuarant and sell to ourselves.  Iam sure there are some Chinese recipe books in the library.

Tony Brown had a good solution to our problem
1. Blacks spent over $ 1 billion dollars per year, attending national conventions(NAACP, frat, sorority, civil rights and other black group).
2. Most if not all of this money is spent in white hotels and the theme is usually what the white man won't do for us.
3. Cancel, just 1 YEAR of those meetings and pool the $ 1 billion.
4. Take $300 million of that 1 billion and buy 20 hotels in the largest cities in America with a black population.
5. All black groups would then hold their meetings in any of those 20 hotels on an annual basis.  Hire blacks companies in those cities as support during those meeting (catering, printing, maintance, etc).
6. Even with the $300 million we still would have a surplus of $700 million.  This could be invested and interest generated could fund almost any project or program for black America.
7. All we would have to do is a cancel an annual meeting for 1 YEAR.
8. As Mr. Brown stated, "If you can't stay away from your meeting for 1 year, we don't deserve to be free."

Ken: I agree with all of the ideas..  James Clington, George Fraser and Claud Anderson has been mention same thing for last two decades..  We need find ways to strengthen our communities economically and keep our hbcu's open as well.  Our people need begin withdraw their captial out of white banks and put it in black owned banks..  I love idea that we need establish  black owned Italian, Asian,  Mexican and vegan eateries within our community..

Btw: how about estalish our own k-12 schools within our communties..  And we start establishing our own retail stores and health food ventures in the black community..

8. As Mr. Brown stated, "If you can't stay away from your meeting for 1 year, we don't deserve to be free."

If it were as simple as the organizations postponing a meeting for a year, it might fly.  However, the flaw in the "plan" is that the $1 billion includes individual attendee's spending on travel, booze (especially scotch), entertainment, etc., in addition to registration fees and extras.

So....that would mean, for this $1B approach to work, that members of ALL those organizations would have to be convinced that they should contribute an equal amount of money to a fund of some sort, instead of "enjoying" what the funds pay for.

And, just for an extreme example, a Mason who is also attends his church denomination and college fraternity conferences would have to contribute the total for all three of those events.

On another board, long ago, when this idea was mentioned, I recounted the story of Rev. Dr. Thomas Kilgore, principal founder of the National Progressive Baptists and long-time Chairman of the Board of Morehouse.  He proposed that various groups band together to invest in one (or two) hotels in which to hold their meetings.  In better economic times, franchises and/or financing would reduce the initial cost.  I believe he proposed starting with St. Louis because of its central location in the country.

His was a much more modest proposal, but failed to gain support, either.

Great point. Many black people don't like doing business with other blacks.

Our race is going to continue to be chronically unemployed until we start generating our own jobs in our own communities.  This is regardless of who's president.
