As a lot of you know the various HBCU cheerleaders have names for their cheerleading squads:

NCCU - Champagne
Virginia State - Woo Woos
Shaw - Chi Chi's
VUU - Rah Rahs
FSU - Cheer Phi Smoov

Well since Chowan is the first PWC to join the CIAA I looked up their cheerleaders and found out they are called The Sapphires.   Some folks would think of the jewel sapphire.  But those of us who are old school would think of the old TV show Amos and Andy.  Kingfish's wife's name was Sapphire.   nono2   no   tiptoe

Well 12 out of the 17 are black.   clap

Meet The Sapphires

I counted 13, but I don't see why this is a big deal, considering Chowan really isn't a PWC. Yea, we know it wasn't founded as an HBCU; however, that is irrelevant to the facts.

It's their name that I am referring to - The Sapphires.

Pardon? Irrelevant to what facts? The fact that it NOW has a student population that is more than 50% African American doesn't change the fact that it was founded as a PWC, unlike the rest of the CIAA schools, which were founded because AA's couldn't attend Chowan.

GK, the point I was trying to make is that this shouldn't be such a surprise considering African Americans take up more than half the population.  You're right it doesn't change the fact that Chowan was once a PWC, but how it was founded doesn't negate what's happening today.  Times do change!!! Is this suppose to be a history changing moment or is it significant because they have joined a historically black conference? For all we know, this may have been the norm at Chowan long before they decided to join the CIAA.

Top-quality sapphires are rare

Some Old TV Show sapphires are also very rare to find, as well.

Of course the  Woo Woo's  set the tone. Everybody else were so, so. Shaw was down right boring with all that dialogue. Frankly that cheerleading exhibition has become somewhat drab. It would be better if they would put more effort into skilled cheering and less on dancing and theatrics.
