During a special ceremony on February 13, 2009, the American Camellia Society and the Fort Valley State University College of Agriculture unveiled a beautiful, multi-layered dark pink camellia to honor Betty Jean Hubbard Rivers, wife of President Larry E. Rivers. FVSU’s first lady Rivers said, “I am honored that one of God’s creations will bear my name—a beautiful pink camellia. I am humbled by this experience.”

The flower, created by Savannah camellia breeder Gene Philips, is registered with the American Camellia Society.

This garden, named Blossoms in the Valley….The Betty Jean Rivers Camellia Garden, is home for the plant, “First Lady Bettyjean.” The petals symbolize President Larry E. Rivers’ “communiversity” initiative (strengthening the university’s ties with the community through service and collaborative programs) by bonding to form a beautiful flower.

February 2010 marks the first anniversary for the camellia garden. FVSU extends the invitation to attend the unveiling of the commemorative brick walkway at the Betty Jean Rivers Camellia Garden 11 a.m., Friday, Feb. 12, 2010 on the campus of Fort Valley State University.

Located on the lawn of the C.V. Troup Building at FVSU, the garden was designed and created by Chris Daniel, grounds supervisor for FVSU’s Plant Operations Division.

Visitors may stroll through the garden and enjoy a variety of camellias. As the wind stirs crepe myrtles, Mexican heather, golden mop cypress, purple pixie fringe flowers, snapdragons and other seasonal flowers and plants move gracefully under the Fort Valley sun.

Take a deep breathe and enjoy the fragrance of hyacinth, winter daphne, knockout roses and violas.

Don’t miss the opportunity to sit in the gazebo - a great spot to relax, enjoy a good book or chat with friends. Enjoy the soothing sounds emanating from the blue fish that fill the small pond daily with fresh water. Look closely and you’ll be entertained by colorful, active koi that swim the path of the pond.

Come visit and enjoy the sights and sounds at Blossoms in the Valley…The Betty Jean Rivers Camellia Garden.
