PLEASE ignore the recent report by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommending AGAINST routine screenings for Breast Cancer starting at age 40.

in 2007, 30% of ALL early detection Breast Cancers were found in people under 50.... THIRTY PERCENT!

The recommendation by that so-called non-partisan pannel was just a political ploy to de-rail Health Reform. EVERY major medical organization disputes it and STRONGLY encourages you to ignore it.

Women should have a baseline mammogram done at age 30 when the Breasts are most dense, then begin routine screening on an ANNUAL BASIS at age 40.

Women should perform Breast self exams at least once per month starting at age 30 and twice per month at age 40.

Men, who BTW make up 1% of all Breast Cancer cases, should also perform a self exam at least once per month.

The report released last month was deliberately timed to cause confusion and fear about governmental efforts to change the Health Care  Insurance industry. It has VERY little basis in actualy PUBLIC HEALTH and this fact is punctuated by the number of professional groups and organizations that have come out forcefully AGAINST the flawed recommendations in it.

This report that has been UNIVERSALLY criticized by The American Cancer Society, The National Cancer Institute, The American College of Radiology, The American Board of Radiology, The American Society of Radiologic Technicians, The American Medical Association, The National Medical Association,  The National Public Health Association and almost EVERY State Health Department in the Country.

PLEASE ignore it, and continue to get yourselves screened... and fellas, insist that the women in your lives do the same.

It could mean the difference between life and death.  nod

BTW... if you don't trust old Chollys advice, then PLEASE consult with your General Practicioner/Family Doctor; they'll tell you the same thing.

Remember; Breast Cancer is VERY treatable if caught early, and that's what mammograms are VERY good at doing.... ESPECAILLY with the new digital technology available to most radiologists.

So continue to get those ta-tas mashed and live long and happy lives!  Grin

old news cholly.  doctors have been all over the networks saying they would not follow those guidelines.  doctors were even on the tv stations in richmond saying they were not going to follow those guidelines.  i'm sure since this came out during sweeps many local tv stations did the same thing.

Thank you Cholly.  My grandmother passed from Breast Cancer  Cry and I must admit that I have not been as diligent as I need to be.  So, your words spoke to me.  Much love to you.

thirdeye a significant portion of women who develop breast cancer DO NOT have any risk factors, however, since you do, you should REALLY take care of yourself.

IF you are over 30 and don't have that baseline mammogram, get one ASAP. If you are over 40 then you should get mammograms done TWICE a year at a minimum, and do your breast self exams weekly. You should also visit your GP and let them know that you are concerned and want to establish a baseline study for comparison purposes.

Mammography is different now than it was just a few years ago. With newer digital X-rays, improved ultrasound and now breast MRIs there are a WIDE array of imaging modalities to catch it early and treat it.

Remember; aside from skin cancer, Breast Cancer is the #1 cause of cancer in American women and the SECOND leading cause of cancer deaths among most non-hispanic women.

It's VERY important that you look out for yourselves ladies.  nod

One more thing:

Be persistent...if something doesn't feel right when you do your self breast exam, get more than one dr's opinion if you have to...my grandmother was persistent...her doctor told her he didn't see anything abnormal two or three times...she went to another doctor and they found a tumor..she had a mastectomy...had she not been persistent I could have lost her 20+ years ago...

So Cholly and Valley:

I want to send my heartfelt appreciation for this thread.  Thursday night I was out-at night- determined to rake my leaves myself.  Got a pain in my chest that didn't go away.  Finished the yard, hung up the Christmas wreath, set out the pointsettas, came in the house and my chest was still hurting.  I took a shower and laid down and it didn't stop.  Normally I would have just taken a tylenol and chalked it to I pulled a muscle or indigestion--or something that would go away, and gone to sleep, but THIS conversation nagged me. "Take care of yourself...be proactive." I got up and went to the ER of a SUPER GREAT HOSPITAL here in Richmond.  Ended up staying overnight having a barrage of tests done to make sure it wasn't my heart...even though I am low risk and promised the Doctors that I didn't think it was my heart.
It ended up that I just strained a ligament/muscle in my chest near my breastbone, (which is now the BIGGEST JOKE ACROSS THE BOARD from my family, friends, and even my students). I have a healthy heart, just don't know how to rake leaves.  But, I was glad I went to make sure and I truly owe it to THIS thread.  I kept saying we were just talking about it...what if it is my heart???  So thank you FAMILY seriously.  We don't know how words from people that you don't even know, in person, changes lives.  I THANK GOD, that I am good.  But, acknowledge that if it were my heart, you guys would have TRULY saved my life (Because I am so healthy and so busy taking care of everyone else, I get complacent about my own health), so THANK YOU BOTH-DEEPLY.  Love yuz guys, sista VG and Uncle Cholly. hugs hugs

I am sooo glad that you did that 3I hugs....you just never know...better safe than sorry nod

This summer my mother had a HUGE coughing spell....she had respiratory issues and she just thought that she needed a breathing treatment (I had been begging her to go get one b/c she was coughing off and on)...went to the Doctor, but to make a long story short it wasn't a respiratory issue...she had  suffered from a minor heart attack and was in the hospital for a week....

She just had a bypass 3 months ago and is doing well...but had she not gone to the doctor who knows what would have happened..

thirdeye, which hospital in richmond did you go to.  the last time i had chest pains mrs. y took me to st. francis.  also, i read years ago to never drive to the hospital if you have chest pains.

btw, unless you are cholly's niece you should never call him uncle cholly.  daddy y taught us in the eyes of the white man you are a boy till you are 50.  then you become an uncle.  you don't have to be a man to be an uncle.  you are never a man to them.  he taught us unless it is a niece or nephew to never allow anyone to call you uncle.
