Alabama A&M University faces budget issues

WAFF 48 News Huntsville

Alabama A&M University is dealing with a budget crunch and the university's board of trustees is looking for ways to minimize the impact on faculty, staff, and students.

University leaders want the board to look at proposals including outsourcing of physical facilities.

Trustees want to know how any changes would affect jobs and benefits for university employees.

Chairman Odysseus M. Lanier wants the university to move with caution.

"There are problems when you have cultural shift, when you have new management coming in trying to take over," said Lanier.

"There are problems when you move folks from payroll where they're getting this level of benefits, this level of time off, when you move them over here to get this level of benefits, this level of time off," he continued.

The committee also discussed teacher's pay and the idea of reducing their salary during the summer months.

Making cuts to meet fill budget gaps always involve some hard unpopular choices.

I'm kind of surprised to hear A&M hadn't already outsourced their physical facilities yet.  I believe TU did that some time ago.  I wonder how many other schools have done the same.

SC State is probably facing the same thing with the fourth budget cut of the fiscal year in SC.
