Because the black student who wins the pagaent/contest at a white school, whether by voting or from being selected deserves the accolades of winning and earned the right to represent her student body.   This young lady won the right to represent her student body (it wasn't a voting contest) through her performance in the pageant.

We can't have it both ways.   If the students had celebrated her win in the first place, she wouldn't have written the president about her situation.

Do the black queens at white universities write letters to the US President and to their alumni trying to get them to like her? NO!

Many black queens at white universities are elected due to block black voting anyway. What block white vote or block black vote at Hampton took place to get this student elected Miss Hampton University?

Also, this new Miss Hampton University seems to have insulted the entire alumni by writing the US President saying that Hampton University students don't understand anything about diversity and that the students do not understand the changes that are taking place around them in the United States.

Is she really a friend of the university seeing she accused the students of have a lack of knowledge about the United States today?

Might she had spent a little time with the students at the main campus before running for queen she would have developed friendships and full support from the main campus and there may have been no issue at all.

That's still sour milk.  She is a Hampton student. . despite whichever campus she's enrolled.  I already stated it was in poor taste to write the letter; but I also stated she wouldn't have written the letter if not for the hostile reception from her peers.

One situation caused another situation; and you can certainly blame her for not considering the PR damage of writing the letter. . she was probably just being emotional and/or quick-tempered. But you must also blame the student body first for not accepting her.

Maybe we needed this mirror held up to our faces to see the hypocrisy with which we sometimes operate as HBCUs.  Hampton (along with many larger HBCUs) are supposed to be safe havens against discrimination and stalwarts for diversity.  Let us not forget our mission.

Where's the hypocrisy in what I've stated. Not about what others may have stated. I'd like to see where the hypocrisy is in my posted comment.

No hypocrisy in your statement; I was referring to the operations at HBCUs.

My major problem with this is she didn't follow th chain of command....

Is this a case of widespread dissent, or did she just hear some unsavory comments from a few people and as a result got hurt or just pissed?  Did she speak with the powers that be about the situation?  The SGA? The Administration?  shrug

Nope, she went straight to Obama......I'm sorry, but he's got more pressing issues to worry about.

There was a queen in black queen in MS, LA, Ak,...somewhere (think it was an SEC school).....anyway she faced animosity, sneers, and jeers....but she kept it moving and stayed poised....

Cheap shot.  Roll Eyes

Getting back to the issue here  Roll Eyes   I feel this way, this was about the election correct? All you have to do is go back and make sure all the rules were followed and if she won fair and square, TO THE VICTOR GOES THE SPOILS. nod

Okay, I could really care less about her [or anybody else] being homecoming queen,
but if she told me she wrote The President, I'd seriously probably LAFF in her face.
Did she also write Santa and the Easter Bunny, too....expecting a reply?Huh?  Roll Eyes

I watched that report and it seems that the students are only mad because  their dirty laundry was aired. Some said as much in the report in regards to the way many students felt about her election. She crumbled under pressure, and you're right Bison, the administration likely had a hand in this. This should be a lesson to all students when it comes to diversity. Keep your mouths shut or else you might get painted as a campus of closed minded morons.

While I think the letter might have been a bit much, I understand where she is coming from. First, she won and she is Miss Hampton. She is not the first white to represent an HBCU. That's old news. Unfortunately, Negroes getting mad because their "friends" did not win is also old news. This is a case of being short sighted and narrow minded, much like white folk when Blacks win at PWCs. No one stops to think about the new people she might attract to HU. If whites can be quarterbacks, they can be queens. Remember, not too many years ago, the shoe was on the other foot and we hated how it fit.

Older heads can remember the furor when dark-skinned beauty queens were crowned. Or better yet sisters wearing naturals /Fros were frowned on initially.
